Sports Personality of the Year 2009

Just thought I would put that again as we are into the fourth month of the year.

I think Jenson Button has a great start winning the first 2 GPs of the F1 season.

Also I think some of the Irish rugby union team are in my list.

Oh! And maybe in Simon Jackson style, Kate Winslet too for winning her first Oscar

Overseas: So far Rafeal Nadal and the guy who won the US Masters golf last Sunday

Andy Murray is the bookies fave at the moment, and if he wins a slam this year (probably most likely the US Open in Sept) he's got a good chance

Mark Cavendish will probably win the green jersey in the Tour de France, becoming only the second Brit to win a final jersey (25 years after Robert Millar). If Murray wins a major, he has no chance, but he should at least be nominated.

Re Jenson Button: Lemme get this straight. He's been an F1 driver for nearly 10 years and has won one race. He gets a different car to everyone else and suddenly wins two in a row. All of a sudden he's an outstanding sportsman?! Can we nominate his car instead?

Holy crap, he has as well. Where did that time go? I remember when he was the plucky young newcomer.

The Irish rugby team includes Northern Ireland so part of the team covers the UK, which is the same as Europe's Ryder Cup which has the team of the year award before, so I would say they are valid for that award. As for individuals, I suppose it would depend on which side of the border they are from.

My thoughts exactly.

Where's he been for the past ten years??!

In that time he peddled every excuse in the book as to why he wasn't getting anywhere and retiring from a race for the 100th time, yet suddenly he's being touted as the greatest talent out there?! I think not.

His car would certainly be worthy of the accolade.

The team of the year award isn't solely for British teams.

As for the Ireland players, yes I take your point it is all Ireland but I would be suprised if the OP is looking beyond O'Gara or O'Driscoll, both of whom come from the south.

The rules according to the BBC website are:

Quote:
To the (British only) team that has achieved the most notable performance in British sport.
However the West Indies cricket team did win it once. Maybe it covered the Commonwealth then?

He's actually one of the most consistent finishers in F1, he has hardly ever retired due to something of his own making.

He has always been an amazing talent, just lumbered with absolute donkeys of cars for the last 2 years

If Murray wins a major, he has no chance of winning SPOTY ?? If he wins a major he will be odds on favourite to win it

I meant if Murray wins a major, Cavendish has no chance of winning.

I doubt it.

Not when you consider two International Rugby Union teams and the England Football Team are arguably worthy, and are more well-known. But even those could be blown out of the window if we win the Ashes back...

Team of the year could be the England Under 21s if they win the Uefa Cup this summer

So, if Northern Ireland win the 2010 World Cup They wont be in the running????

I think that should read "UK only"

Mary Peters was born in England and represented Great Britain in the Olympics (and NI in the Commonwealth Games).

Barry McGuigan was born in the ROI, but represented GB in the Olympics and I think has dual nationality.

Frankie Dettori was only eligible because he has lived in Britain for so long and now holds a British passport.

Mary Peters is from Northern Ireland. NI is in the UK. Barry McGuigan is the only non British person to win the SPOTY although he did represent NI in the Commonwealth games. He represented Ireland in the Olympics, so it looks like, as suggested above, he does have dual nationality

Whoever wins may not have much personality.

I would like it to be renamed, " Sports performance of the year"

A lot will depend on whoever wins what towards the end of the year. If, say, Andy Murray wins Wimbledon, then he'd be pretty much favourite, considering how long ago it's been that someone British has won the men's singles title.

If he didn't win that, and Jenson Button became F1 champion, then he'd be right up there with a shout, especially considering the BBC's first year of having F1 back.

Other contenders could come from the 2009 World Athletics Championship, and if a British player wins The Open golf.

What a difference a better car makes. Perhaps this years winner could be a car.

In regards to Jenson Button it's amusing how when the car is bad, it must just be the driver. When the car is good, it must just be the car. Who are the ones with excuses now...

He seems to have a good personality, and great towards other drivers, but so far I think there are a few more worthier people.
