Precious (2009)

All I gotta say is WOW...
This film looks amazing. I had goosebumps and tears in my eyes just from the film trailer.

It's been given rave reviews and 3 awards at the Sundance Festival.

The film also stars Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz and Oprah Winfrey was involved in it aswell.

I can't wait to see this!

I'm looking forward to seeing this too. Especiall after the review on the bbc website;

Just back from a screening of the Sundance award-winner Precious which is featuring in Un Certain Regard. The auditorium was packed, the fullest I have seen it yet, no doubt thanks to the celebrity names attached to the film. Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz and US comedienne Mo'Nique all feature in the film, which was executive produced by Oprah Winfrey - who also comes in for some name-checking in the movie.

Carey and Kravitz: much more glamorous in real life
Carey and Kravitz appear in the unlikely guises of dowdy social worker and male nurse respectively, but both prove effective in their roles, melding seamlessly into the ensemble cast. After Carey's successful performance here in last year's Tennessee, (also directed by Precious director Lee Daniels) it seems we may have to start taking her acting career seriously after all.

Newcomer and lead, Gabourey Sidibe, does a good job as 16-year-old girl Precious, raped by her father, abused by her mother, impoverished and illiterate. But the stand-out performance comes from Mo'Nique as her abusive mother. Quite remarkably monstrous, but ultimately revealing a pathetic humanity. The reaction was very positive in the screening room, making this film definitely one to watch.

As a Mariah fan this is particlarly gratifying to see

The novel on which this movie is based makes for very disturbing reading.

The mother of Precious has a monologue in the final pages which is reportedly used word for word in the movie - if this is true then I imagine it will be a very difficult scene to watch..I had to put the book down for a while before I could carry on. Harrowing doesn't even begin to describe it.

I wouldn't mind reading the book.

Mariah has been given a lot of praise for her role as a social worker in the film. And according to various sites, one of them being heatworld, it's a film not too miss..

This is a FANTASTIC film. It screened at the London Film Festival and got a standing ovation at the end. People were absolutely loving it.

The trailer makes it look miserable but there are a lot of laughs too...it's a really good piece of work.

When I hear about this film I can't help but think of that little dog out of Silence of the Lambs.

'Come here Precious, you lil' bast***!'

Blige 'cried working on Precious song'
Tuesday, November 17 2009, 21:42 GMT

By Catriona Wightman

Rex Features
Mary J. Blige has revealed that she struggled to record a song for the Precious soundtrack.

Blige, who wrote 'I Can See In Colour' for the film, told Variety that the track was inspired by her upbringing in a New York project.

"[Director] Lee [Daniels] would say, 'I want it darker, bluesier'," she explained. "'Use your own life'. I went into the studio and cried hard, reaching back."

The star added that she also wanted to write the song because of her work with women on the street.

"Precious is why I keep telling this story," she said.

Blige recently opened a women's refuge in New York.

Having read the novel and also knowing that Tyler Perry produced (along with Ms Oprah) I knew this would be a good film - but with the clips I've seen and also the sundance coverage it surely deserves Golden Globes and Oscars. Mo'Nique and Gabbi are superb!
