Christopher Eccleston - Top Bloke

You'll have to Register to read it unfortunately (though it's quick and simple), but there's an incredibly moving story about an encounter between Eccleston and a young DW fan which puts the lie to the negative stories about him and his attitude towards the series here:

Really nice guy, was very happy when he became Dr Who because we're both Mancs, and well, lots of planets have a north. Gonna be watching him in GI Joe in a few months.

If lots of planets have a north... i'd be very interested to see how planets that don't have a north work! What do we have there? Half a planet? lol

Guys, I have asked the permission of the poster if we could post it on here or not, so I'm just waiting for a reply, and then I will get back to you guys....I think as some of it is personal, it would only be fair if she allows it to be copy and pasted here.....

No, just a planet without a magnetic field.

So some planets don't have gravity. That's interesting!

You don't need a magnetic field to have gravity.

Admins if this is in the wrong secection please move to right section thank you.

Well me and my nephew, Dillon headed to London on Saturday the 30th of May to see A Doll's House.

We dropped off our bags and then headed into town. We wandered about London’s streets trying to find the Donmar Warehouse Theatre and we even had to go into The Donmar West End where Hamlet is now on with Jude Law, to ask for directions. I asked Dillon did he want to try for returns for Hamlet and he said nah it doesn’t have David in it (I have him well trained now).

So after an hour searching, we finally found the Donmar Warehouse. We bought our programmes, did a bit of recon on the stage door situation and then decided to head off for lunch and some sight seeing and then come back after the Matinee performance to see if we could get an autograph.

We headed back to the Donmar Warehouse and stood outside the theatre. All the people from the matinee performance left and none of the actors left through the main door. We got told by some autograph hunters that Chris and others had left by a back door but we didn’t give in. We stood outside the door for an hour and 45 minutes and just as we were about to give up Chris walks towards us. I got so flustered that I couldn’t even get the lid off my pen. Dillon was in a state of shock that his Doctor was standing in front of him. I asked Chris for an autograph and he said no problem and then he turned to Dillon. He asked who he was and where he had come from. Dillon just about got the words out, plane, Dublin, train. And I filled in the gaps and told Chris we had come from Ireland that morning. Chris got down on his knee so he could talk to Dillon better. He started to sign an autograph for Dillon and asked if he liked Doctor Who and of course Dillon said yes and that he was his Doctor. Chris had such a big smile on his face and he told Dillon that he had made his day and asked if he could give him a hug which of course Dillon wanted so much. He then added The Doctor at the end of the autograph which Dillon said thank you for. I managed to get a few snaps of the hug and the chat that was now going on in front of me. Then they launched into a chat about Manchester United as Chris had asked Dillon what football club he followed and as soon as he said Manu they were off, as Chris is also a big Manu fan. I just couldn’t believe all this was happening for Dillon and I was almost in tears. I just kept telling Chris how much this means to Dillon and how much he loves him. He asked Dillon why he was in London and as Dillon was still finding it hard to get words out and I told him that the only reason we had come all this way was to see him because Dillon was such a huge fan and that we had managed to get tickets for the play that night and Chris said thanks for coming all that way to see me. He then apologised to Dillon because he had to leave to get ready for the evening performance but then turned to me and asked me if we could meet him in the bar after the play.

“Would it be ok??” Are you kidding me I was thinking to myself but decided to say that would be brilliant of course. He then hugged Dillon again and said thanks mate you have made my day and I’ll see you later. The other people who had been looking for autographs had just been standing starring at us the whole time got their chance for an autograph too. Chris left and then me and Dillon headed for dinner. We got to the end of the street and Dillon burst into tears from the happiness that all this had just happened. We had a look at our photos and then grabbed some tea as we were too excited to eat.

We arrived at the theatre and looked for Flump as we had such a big story to tell her. We found her in the bar and told her the whole story. She couldn’t believe it. Then I finished the tale with “we are meeting Chris in bar later” and she was gob smacked.

The play was brilliant. Gillian Anderson was amazing as Nora and it was odd for me to see her up close after watching her for 9 years as Scully in the X-Files. The rest of the cast were really good but Christopher was outstanding. He moved me to tears in the second half of the play when he was distraught and crying over the love of life coming back to him. He really put everything into the part and I can’t praise his performance enough. Dillon thought the play was great. It was his first play and I though that he wouldn’t really get it or enjoy the whole thing but he understood the plot and laughed and gasped along with all of us and of course he perked up even more every time Chris’s character came on stage. When the bows came at the end of the play he saw Dillon and me and smiled up at Dillon.

We headed down the stairs after the show and had to tell one of the staff that Chris had told us to wait in the bar. She said Chris from the box office and I said no, Chris as in Christopher Eccleston told us to wait in the Bar. She brought us through and we waited with baited breathe. Flump joined us and out he came. Chris asked Dillon if he wanted to see him dressing room and Dillon went all shy and said no. I said he is just shy and that he would love to see it. So there we were standing all together in Christopher Eccleston’s dressing room with Toby Stephen’s who plays one of the other leading parts getting dressed after the show. Dillon started to boo him because his character isn’t really nice and then he even booooed Chris a bit because his character is bit a bit naughty too. They all laughed at that and said that Dillon was right. Well done to Flump for sticking up for Chris’s character as he is just a bit misunderstood. We then headed back out to the hall so that poor Toby could finish getting dressed.

Chris chatted away to Dillon and asked him if he would like to be an actor and Dillon said he wanted to be a writer and to write for Doctor Who. I told Chris that Dillon wants to write a Doctor Who story so that Chris can come back as the Doctor as he misses him in the show. Chris told Dillon that if he wrote a story and sent to the BBC that he would come back to do it. They shook hands on that one. I asked Chris if he could write my autograph to me and he said no problem. Flump also got one too. I then asked if I could take a picture of Dillon with him and I managed to get two. I also chanced my arm and got a photo with Chris myself. Well he is the Doctor after all and such a brilliant, kind and wonderful person.

We finished up with Chris telling Dillon again that he had made his day and gave him another hug. I told Chris thank you so much you have made my nephew’s year for doing all this.

We all then headed down to leave the theatre. There was a queue of people waiting for Gillian Anderson when we got there. We hung about a while to see if she would come out. I think I saw the back of her head and maybe the side of her face once but that was it. Even my over the shoulder photos were rubbish. Flump managed to get one photo of her so that’s something.

Me, Flump and Dillon had a chat about what had just happened and me and Flump told Dillon that if he did write that Doctor Who story that he would have to manage to get David in it too. He said he would give it go.

We all hugged goodbye in the tube station and went our separate ways. Me and Dillon were still talking about it when we got home. We fell fast asleep as we were knackered from the long day but the first thing we said the next morning was that we both still can’t believe all of that happened.

I thought that my meeting David Tennant for the first time was going to be one of the best days of my life and a hard act to follow and even though it still is, meeting Chris and seeing Dillon having the best day of his whole life is on parallel with it. Chris is such a brilliant and giving person that he is now my second favourite Doctor and has bumped Peter to third place. I have been a fan of him as an actor for w long time but now I am just a fan of the man himself. Dillon is still smiling and in shock that he has had such a great time and adventure in London that he can’t wait to go back. He is overjoyed that he met His Doctor.

The End.
There you go

That's brilliant. Eccleston is a cool guy for doing that. His tenure as the Doctor will obviously never be forgotten, 13 episodes of pure genius!

Even though everyone was pretty miffed that he was only doing one series I think it definitely worked out for the best in the end. It makes series 1 unique and series 2 was nowhere near as good anyway. I don't think even Chris could have saved dross like The Idiot's Lantern and Fear Her. Though I reckon he would have played the better episodes like The Girl In The Fireplace and The Impossible Planet just as good as Tennant, maybe better. Rose's ending at the beach would have been even more emotional. It wasn't until series 3 that Tennant's time really started.

That is an awesome story! Well worth the wait.

My application was finally approved today and so I saw the pictures that go with the story, too. I am not ashamed to admit that I became a bit teary-eyed.

That is such a great story. Proves Chris takes much more pride in his stint as the Doctor than a lot of people think. So happy for Dillon

Also makes another appearance of Chris as the Doc for a special that tiny bit more possible
