Kurt Nilsen - Why Pop Idol can work....

I couldn't not start this thread. I have been listening to Kurt's mp3s. I do not wish for a minute to upset or offend anyone, but this guy, IMO, outstrips all of our final 12 this year on the UK PI2.

After my disappointment at Sam not winning PI2, Kurt has well made up for it for me.

Kurt Nilsen is a real find in the world; his talent is superb. His voice is incredible and very versatile. This is what PI is all about for me...about finding someone who may not have made it through usual channels but has true brilliance.

Here's the link for Kurt's stuff, peeps....I even found a link to buy his CD, after a kind poster told me where to get it...

http://dirtydog.no/mp3/kurtnilsen/ [mp3s]

Rock on Kurt Nilsen; a real star. No question.

Norway - congratulations on your new national treasure, and thank you for sharing him......

Thanks for the link Zip!
I think Kurt is very good, my only problem was he sounded like U2 sooooo much it was uncanny! (although that's more of a compliment than a problem)
So, do I text VOTE KURT to 83322?
You've won me over, at least if he wins the winner will be talented and it will be 'getting one over' on Simon Cowell!

The funny thing is he just barely made it to the last 100 in the Norwegian finals

I didn't see (or don't remember seing) his first audition, but after Kurt had won the Norwegian Final they aired a special program in Norway showing his way through the different stages. The first glimpse of him was entering the local audition wearing some strange looking army-jacket and singing one of his own songs (or something equally unknown to me). He sang it quite ok, but nothing spectacular. Then the 4 people in the panel had their say. The first one didn't think he was pop-idol material and shouldn't be allowed through to the final 100. The second ref (a woman) thought he was more suited as a singer in a band, and didn't see him as an Idol either. But the third one wanted him further and so did the last ref aswell. That last ref had the tie-break vote, so the final verdict was that he passed. Kurt was delighted and went out of the room.

Then, before the next contestant came in, the 4 people in the panel started discussing Kurt. This wasn't meant to be aired as sound-crew and production-people were stepping infront of the camera and the people were clarely just discussing between them-selfs (but it made for a good show in this extra aired episode ). The guy most opposed to letting Kurt pass was very upset about being overruled. He couldn't understand what the others were thinking letting him pass: "He's clearly not a pop idol! He won't sell a single record!"
The chief ref said something along "Yeah, maybe you're right, but that's not our job to decide. With that voice we had to let him through."

For many weeks later as they narrowed it down to the last 10-20 they kept refering to him as "the guy with the space between his teeth", and he wasn't near being a favourit until maybe the last 8 or so. Then the prettyboys started falling out and Kurt's voice seemed to improve and really shine.

Would be fun if he won world Idol. The ref screaming "He won't sell a single record!" will surely have to bite his own words...

<Warning: I Disagree, so if you don't wish to read an opposing viewpoint you might wanna steer clear of my post>

Yes.. He does have a good voice, I'd hardly call him a breath of fresh air though, his voice is so similar to Bono's it's not even funny. And imo, while he was good, he was hardly the best on World Idol, Will, Kelly, Guy and Ryan all outsung him imo, as well as looking like a Pop Idol (AND being a breath of fresh air).

All imo of course, and I'm glad you love him, hope you have lots of fun listening to and watching him perform!

Let us know if his album is good!

What a great way to put it! I have loved all the mp3s--what a wonderful and versatile voice! In my years of teaching singing, I taught so many students with good voices, so it's not easy to TOTALLY impress me! Kurt TOTALLY impresses me! Can't wait to get the CD. BTW, he's adorable! Judges (you idiots), are you there? The world is talking to you!

It is great to see so many forum members agreeing!

When I watched WI, Kurt really blew me away, but my musical knowledge isn't great -- just like listening -- so I thought I would be in a minority. It was amazing to find out that a majority of FMs also thought he was fantastic. And that is FMs from all over the world.

What's even better is that he apparently writes his own songs too, so his CD is full of original work.

Even the judges had to fall back on lookism to say anything negative to him. But actually, he is, IMO, very sweet looking. He certainly is far from ugly.

Thanks for starting this thread, Zip. Is Kurt the new Susanne? Do I have a hope of that being quoted in Private Eye?

Just want to add my voice to the appreciation of Kurt - his voice blew my thermal socks off.
Agreed with Pete Waterman that he controlled his voice amazingly - so for that fact alone means (IMHO) - that he does not sing like Bono - I've heard Bono sing live and he's never been that good......
The way Kurt sustained the long notes just sent thrills through me - amazing. No trills, warbles, vocal aerobics - just pure voice. My husband and 14 year old son were playing a very noisy board game during the programme - just shouting out the odd insulting comment about the rest of the singers - but both stopped and listened to Kurt and both were impressed by him - and it really takes a lot to impress the men in my family....!

Also - not sure why Simon Cowell made the 'ugly' comment or why the Australian judge decided to bring hobbits into his critique. I find Kurt immensley appealing - there's a sparkle in his eyes and he has tremendous charisma and stage presence - in short for me he has that elusive "X-factor" Loved the way the Norwegian judge was almost bursting with pride - and rightly so.

I could easily go on - but would just be echoing what has already been said - but would like to repeat ZipGypsy's thanks - and send gratitude to Norway for sharing him with us. Wish I knew what the Norwegian for "thank you so much" was !

How great to see some great opinions on Kurt.

Weeya...thanks a bunch for all the links...priceless stuff. Kurt is the predominant sound in our house right now...and we're loving every minute of it. Kurt has a great ally in you!

Jeannie...love the image of your thermals being blown away!

RealtorGal - great to see your experience and professional opinion on Kurt's talent giving a good bit of weight to those of us (like me) who love music but just sing in the car....!

Plym and zara...thanks for your background on Kurt and update on Fenrik Lane's site

And TKS...you are very welcome. Your opinions are just as valid as anyone's...anyway...it's all about taste and it does us all good to get an opposing view. What I appreciate about your post is that it's not derogatory...unlike some people who are nasty about folks.

Well, I am still enjoying Kurt's stuff...and even if he doesn't win WI...at least I'll have his CD...that's the important bit.

Rock on guys...let's hear it for the King of Norway (well...in the Elvis-ish sense, that is)....

How wonderful to find a forum to talk about Kurt Nilsen. I had never even heard his name before his World Idol appearance.

I just want to say Kurt up and blew me away in World Idol. His voice reigns supreme. I hope he wins.

His songwriting lyrics with his Fenrick Lane stuff (I have been listening to his stuff, pretty much non-stop, since I downloaded it on Boxing Day) has the wistfulness of John Lennon about it, while his voice is completely distinctive--much, much better than Bono's (who was never a great singer-- but a fabulous lyricist and a great interpreter).

Kurt has a rich rock sound in the lower register enhanced by those unusual-- lovely! very appealing!-- uber notes of Chris Martin from Coldplay. Gorgeous, gorgeous combination.

I think Kurt is going to be a huge force on the world music stage after this event. And he deserves to be. He is enormously talented and I am just frustrated that I am going to have to wait any time for his new album material to reach us down under. And it will take forever, dammit!

And I actually love the Hobbit tag that our judge, Dicko, gave him. I think it identifies him quickly to the entire world--in a delightful endearing manner. [And I actually think Kurt is lovely. He just lights up in front of a camera. He has this wicked grin he glints sidelong at the camera, little dimply grins, supreme confidence in his own ability, no apparent on stage nerves, and that extraordinary vocal range-- aaaacht! the man is completely beguiling.]

Anyway the Hobbit tag is going to stick, forevermore, so the whole world better get used to it.

Love the man. Love, love, LOVE his work!

Go Frodo!

The best! Better than all the rest!

[Tho', lord ,Will Young enchanted me too. We had thought that Gareth Gates was PI and had barely heard Will's name. Yikes. I can't believe people did not feel Will Young's performance was awe-inspiring. He, too, is truly special. These two sing my kinda music. Well done, both!]

Welcome to the club, Till! Great to see so many people who appreciate Kurt speaking up. Like you, I had never heard of Kurt until last week.

If Pop Idol achieves anything....it'll be giving Kurt a stage in front of the world...

Rock on, Kurt

Peeps, please see this link by another poster on how to buy Kurt's stuff if you want and it's hard to get...

I requested that this store http://www.akersmic.no/english/
put Kurt Nilsen up on the English pages. If they do, that would make ordering a lot easier for foreigners (non-Norwegians)

I'd also like to chime in that Kurt doesn't have an identical voice to Bono, though it is pretty similar on that song. I also think Kelly will be his biggest opposition, even though someone says she shouts with tone, it sounds pretty impressive IMHO.

I just received his CD this morning...and I've been listening to it most of the day. It's excellent! My particular favourite is "She's so High"

I too thought he sounded just like Bono on World Idol but not on the album....you can hear his Norweigan accent and couldn't mistake him for Bono.

What a voice! I made my vote during last weeks show.

Thanks for all the MP3 links...I'm downloading them all.

I bought the album from http://www.cdon.com/ click on EU and it's all in English. It was an excellent service....took 2 days to arrive.
