New EPG red button crash

Since getting the new epg I have had several crashes when using the red button on bbc to view the weather page (4026)?

More than once this has been when a recording is in progress

So can only assume this is a feature of the new epg?

Happens when HDMI link is inactive.

Are you;

1) Using magic eye without HDMI TV switched on?
2) Using component on a Thompson?

Doesn't happen on My Thomson when viewing via scart or even RF with nothing plugged into hdmi socket.

It works fine from either local control, or remote control via RF2 and the magic eye.

So it's yet another bug in the new EPG affecting only SOME boxes in some circumstances

Last night crashed on the main tv whilst watching over hdmi.
Other times crashed on my bedroom tv watching over component with using a magic eye as well.

So no real clue there.

This is a first gen thomson from launch date with complete psu replacement fitted 6 months ago along with upgraded 500GB drive.

It doesn't happen everytime but more often than a once off.

Use red button every night with old epg to check the weather and no crashes at all.
So now a crash 1 in every 20 uses.

Box otherwise is very reliable.

That reminds me ...

I don't think that I have ever had a crash when pressing Red (since digital started back in 1998). That was true of Sky, Sky+ and (since 2006) Sky+HD.

Now, since getting the new EPG two months ago, I have have 3-4 crashes. The box has just shut down immediately after pressing Red (well, after a couple of seconds of thrashing about trying to get the interactive service going).

FWIW this has always been on Sky News (trying to go into the multi-screen News Active stuff). It has always been after midnight.

The first couple of times I thought that it was becuase I pressed Red duing an advert (can you go into Active during the ad breaks ?) and then I started to think that it was because Sky News had gone over to the US half hour (at midnight thirty - does this support News Active ?).

Most recently it was just after midnight and it wasn't during an ad break ... although there was one recording going on (which was trashed of course )

Is there a consensus that there is something flakey about the new EPG and the Red button services in general ?

I have a Thomson box which is over two years old - but I have upgraded the PSU and HDD.

red button problems

Hi. Since getting the new epg on my thomson box I have had the following problems. No Satellitte signal and no red button service. Eventually, I contacted SKY and they appear to have fixed the signal problem by conducting a LNB reset however, the customer service person did confirm that the RED Button service was a problem since the introduction of the new epg and SKY are working on a FIX ! I am still having problems with red button service. I Hope this helps...

How much space do you have left on your disc? I found that if my standard disc is 90+% full the access to text or red button services is touch and go with the new EPG i.e. either will not load or can cause box to crash. Might want to flush out some of your 500 GB's of recordings!!

Well mine is 60% full so I don't think disk space is an issue for me, thats 200GB still available to use.

I thought all the cacheing and storing of the EPG etc. was done on Sky's part of the hard disc? I get the crashing whenever I'm watching ITV and press the red button (Thomson 0007). My hard disc is rarely over 10% used and I have fitted a 500GB drive so don't think it can be anything to do with what's recorded.

I have a similar problem when pressing text on ItV - is there any difference between pressing the text button and the red button? The box appears to be going into text and then crashes completely.

My box is also a Thompson (it says 4E300E), with the standard drive, but not too much used.

I have a Thomson 007 box and I've also experienced a couple of crashes when trying to watch the weather through the red button.

It's only happened a couple of times, and fortunately I wasn't recording anything at the time. It definitely only started with the new EPG.

Replacing the HDD and PSU hasn't made any difference, which suggests it's a software issue.

Hi

similar problem with me. I have 3 boxes in house. One normal. One plus and one HD. Occasionally but more than I would like, when I press red during sky news the whole box crashes. Only way to get signal back is a switch off at the wall

bit of pain since I use sky news active quite a bit

It is a shame Sky could not schedule in the time to beta test this EPG on a full range of their boxes and of course with a list of pre determined tests that the beta testers must carry out.

Sky News Active

I have problem with the red button on Sky News to get into Sky News Active. Most of the time it never works when you tune into Sky News and press the red button. I have found that if you press the text button and once the text page has loaded - exit it - the red button now works.

Every now and again this does cause the box to reboot itself though when pressing the red button. The Sky News Active page with the logo will be displayed and then the box will reboot itself.

I have had this on the BBC weather pages several times on both the old sky+ box and the HD box, usually accompanied by a blue screen with a message saying 'service not available at this time' or something similar - sometimes I can recover with the remote, sometimes I can't and have to pull the plug - I dont think in my case it was anything to do with the new epg as I was already familiar with it happening on the sky+ box

Yes, seen that quite a few times on old and new EPG. I've never had the box lock up with this error though, I've just exited out of text, gone back in and it's been okay.

Mine does this frequently with Sky News red button. Very annoying.

I have the same thing happening on my original HD launch Thomson box, albeit with upgraded PSU & 1Tb HDD, using component.

It's happened every time I've tried it on Sky News but I don't try it too often as it screws up any recordings in progress.

Plenty of space on the disk so that's not a problem.

I also have seen this happen every time on my mums Thomson HD box using HDMI, so it doesn't seem to be a component only issue.

I'd don't remember it happening when I first got the new EPG, just much more recently.

Is there a fix in the pipeline for this or is it just another bug in the new EPG to add to the list.

I have a thomson box, I regularly use the sports multiscreen on the BBC red button, I have had several crashes that cause the box to reboot. Is this a Thomson only problem?

Just wondering if anyone has managed to sort this problem out, as mine also does it alot when pressing red for sky news.
Just shuts down and reboots, happens about 2 or 3 times a week

Nope still does it.

I figured that until all boxes are on the new epg there would be no updates to fix this or other issues.

I have never had a problem with the red button for BBC or Sky......mine would always crash when I tried to use ITV's !

Haven't tried it for ages so no idea if its still affected with the new EPG.

Its so strange how people have almost the same problem with things but many are slightly different - ie - channel crashing for red button.
