ITV lands right to Vampire Diaries

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/broadcas...e-diaries.html

So glad a Sat channel didn't win them. I'm looking forward to this.

Im looking forward to see but i have doubts

The US are mad over Twilight and True blood. And vampire diaries basic plot isn't very different from twilight in some small ways. I don't believe that many will welcome yet another cult vampire series into their home because you don't want the same thing being repeated.

I can see why True blood has been a success because it's kinda like twilight for adults and a better plot.

Sounds dire. As soon as I read this preview I knew it would either end up on E4 or ITV.

Audiences like Gossip Girl and 90210, right? And they also like Twilight. That, basically, sums up the whole conversation the producers had when talking about this adaptation. "So you know what would be great? …" And then they proceeded to go precisely where you think this is going, even though there must have been voices of reason. But they have a point: there's a Twilight panel at Comic-Con this week, and the queue for it started around 24 hours before, by people who'd brought tents. And air mattresses.

All I know is, yes, it's probably likely to make it to British screens, because some buyer, somewhere, is going to say: "90210 hot teens, but also bloodsuckers? My God, they'll love it". And if it does get bought in, it's worth getting some friends round and conducting some kind of drinking game - because judging by the reaction of the preview audience, this series is promising to be funny in all the wrong places.

Hmm, pilots/previews never really show whether shows have real potential to be good.

My thoughts are, it's based on a series, so there should be good character grounding and that really helps shows (IMHO), I just hope they can keep the story lines good week to week.

I've got to admit that the idea of this turned me off completely, and it's clearly just a response to all the kids loving Twilight. I would have much preferred it if the CW had carried on with Reaper, at least that had potential to be something different.

Interesting. When I was a teenager I read a lot of books by the author who wrote the vampire diaries L.J Smith. I might watch this, although I probably wouldnt like it as much now.

Not really, since I'm not a 14-year-old girl. 90210 with vampires sounds like torture.

But I'm sure some of the Twilight fangirls will lap it up.

I've never watched/read Twilight. And admittedly this show doesn't excite me hugely, but I will definitely give it a go.

Watch Twilight. Don't read it. It's has a good premise but the prose is insufferable. Probably about eighty per cent of the words used are adjectives describing the beauty of Edward Cullen. It's one of those books where your a bit unsure whether the author is really perceptive and therefore very good at writing in a voice that connects with her demographic or if she actually just has the emotional sophistication of a thirteen year old girl.

The WB are not the only ones to cash in on the Twilight phenomenom.

Spanish commercial broadcaster Antena3TV have begun pre-production on a 2 episode 150 minute mini series called "No Soy Como Tu" (I'm Not Like You". The mini series, scheduled to air in spring 2010 is a love story about two teenagers, one human, one vampire., and the latter's desire to want to be "normal".

Although nothing has been confirmed by the network, it is rumoured in the Spanish industry that the two part mini will serve as a backdoor pilot for a possible series.

The news of the mini series comes with the network's announcement that they have secured first run rights to the Twilight movie franchise.

I wouldn't be surprised if a similar project soon started production in the UK. With the success of the High School Musical franchise, various TV channels in Spain attempted to emulate the success by launching two daily teen soaps revolving around dance and music academies. Both series bombed, despite Antena3TV having had a huge success with a similar Primetime format (Un paso Adelante) five years prior to the High School Musical phenomenom.

As with Spain, the UK also tried to cash in with the launch of mediocre britannia High.

Anyone also think we will soon hear that a Uk broadcaster is launching their own Teen Vamp series?

I laughed

This does sound dire, just like Twilight, nobody but teenage girls could seriously like this stuff.

BBC3s Being Human is in a class of its own. Although admittedly its unfair for me to say at this stage, since I am yet to see vampire Diaries, judging by its premise, description and promotion, the show sounds like a supernatural version of 90210!!!

It probably won't because they'll stick it on at stupid o clock, like they do with Supernatural. Terrestrial (pardon the pun) TV hasn't a clue how to deal with scifi/fantasy that isn't aimed at kids and families. Sky1 or Virgin would have been a better home for it because Sky will put Stargate: Somethingorother on at primetime. Channel 4 will put it on at 3 in the morning.

Maybe ITV will change the name to Vampire Diaries Fat Chavvy Neighbours from Hell at the Airport to give it a primetime slot.
