Ilse is completely clueless: this is just like the Obama/McCain spat over tyre pressures in the US election last autumn and equally embarrrasing. Had Freeview, DUK, DTG, Ofcom and the manufacturers specified autoretuning and multiple transmitter handling from the start this would have been a non-event. Receivers such as the now defunct SETPAL range did actually handle these problems. Freeview retuning: the gift that keeps on giving to Sky and Freesat!

But they didn't, so as they say "we are where we are", and with that in mind we should be looking forward, not back to what should have been (even if it's annoying/confusing/unnecessary).

Not unless there is compelling evidence that people are actually moving away from Freeview or preferring other services for that very reason.

Michael,

Yes it was a useful link to post; I'd have just posted it in the other thread to keep things together, but hey, no great shakes

Rgds.

Yes, but it's one thing to learn from history, something else entirely to keep on harking back to it in the hope that it did not actually happen , aka "crying over spilt milk" (or should that be "crying over split NIT"?).

Nobody said that. What we said is that the fundamental design flaws with Freeview transmission and reception need to be acknowledged and sorted out rapidly.

freeview users won't be any better off with freesat in that respect. i'm never done checking flysat or kingofsat for non freesat fta channels that move around or get added and rescanning (then deleting tens of shopping channels and religious guff). that said, i am obviously also looking forward to rescan day, sounds exciting.

Well, it seemed to me that that certain statements were trying to turn the clock back, rather than accept what has gone, learn from it and incorporate those lessons into new standards and design. As I said, we should be looking forward to the future, rather than back to the past, as any lessons learned are unlikely to help the millions with existing kit (hence crying over spilt milk - let's accept that it's spilt, clear it up and learn not to spill it in the future).

the scanning issue is one of the problems with freeview- especially if you have to keep the aerial plug out until the progress bar reaches a certain point, to avoid picking up unwanted channels from other masts.

some equipment will see the change and add automatically (our sony does this in the default mode, but you can turn the feature off), while others (eg, our panasonics) spot the change and ask you if you want to scan or not. Some equipment doesnt see any change at all - eg, our Humax pvr + Grundig tv. You just have to know when things are changing - what no internet? You have a problem.

Ease of use it aint.

As pointed out by David(2), some brands have implemented their own auto-detection algorithms. However, there are sometimes good commercial reasons for not wanting new channels added indescriminately to a receiver (tarts on sofas on the kids' TV being one very good example).

I prefer a manual scan, followed by a sort and renumber of the channels just where I want them. I'm not going to give DMOL the pleasure of automatically adding more shopping/gambling/tarts on sofas channels to my service lineup!

One interesting side-effect of the auto-tune mechanism now being rolled out on DTT is that it'll make the NIT really big! Time to see how many more of the crap receivers keel over!!

Is it one of those Matsui tellys powered by old ONdigital software? I have a could ONdigital boxes in store that I get out from time to time and update the channel lists on, and they appear ok. Good luck!

I'm already getting sick of the message popping up on my screen everytime I turn the TV on, telling I need to "retune after lunchtime on the 30/9/09. Press yellow to hide message." If I'm to put up with this for another 12 days I'll end up throwing the TV out the window.
