The new Big L?
Sounds good, not literally on board (I wish)

Would Radio 1 or Gold have anything to say about the name?

Probably not - it'd have to be a radio station instead of a tiny logo on a web page first.

I can't see how Global could stop anyone using the name Gold in the title of their radio station. Not sure about Radio 1 though.

Here we go again. Read's been spouting the "I'll be back on 1395 soon" since Big L went tits. Surely by now his credibility is non-existent?

I hope for his sake it's not his money that's behind it.

Hmmm:

Really, if he wants to get on AM I think his best bet would be to wait until Bauer and Global hand back their AM licences such as 1548 in London.

There is already an AM licence theoretically up for grabs in Devon- would OFCOM re-issue it I wonder?

Part of the UK with a fairly aging population if he wanted to do a 60s nostalgia station.......possibilty of using a boat for one-off novelty events maybe

It's a thought, no?

No there isn't because they won't.

The big city transmitters: 1548 London, Liverpool, Sheffield, Edinburgh, and 1152 in Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow and Norwich would be ideal for a proper gold/nostalgia station imo.

You could call it Pirate Gold 'The Big AM'.

Have the transmitters in Exeter/Torbay been dismantled yet?

Bloody Hell Mike Read.....

If this station is done right it could actually be the countrys number 1 station.....

The concept is extremely exciting.

Radio 1 is quite a common name for radio stations (as is Capital) - there are quite a few stations with that name around the world.

BBC Radio 1 was most likely the first station with that name and may be the biggest - but there may be a Radio 1 in China or India with zillions of listeners?

National DAB eh?

Wonder if he'll take one of those 64kbps test slots on D1 for a 'medium wave feel' to the audio reproduction?

Seriously, 1395 is a waste of money unless you are targetting night time listeners - otherwise you are stuck serving the East Anglian mudflats.

And before the anoraks with the 100ft garden aerials shout me down, just how much of an AM audience did Big L build again?

In all honesty we don't know anything about the concept or what shape the station will take, only a front page with a logo and available platforms is present. I imagine it will be a Big L clone but rather than deviating off into new music the station will remain gold.

I'm still very skeptical, especially with the news about the station launching on national DAB. It's early days, maybe if a proper website with some substance launches I might be swayed into thinking it's a possibility, but until then it's Mike Read dreaming again.

Nice idea. Probably a market for personality led radio with that kind of music - but I'll believe it when I see it and hear it.

One real downside, apart from being pie in the sky just now, is that it doesn't have the name of a former pirate station, so it'll probbaly be a load of shite to many contributors on these forums.

It's an interesting one. But this project has got they guys from Star 107.5 behind it.

I suspect it might even have Blackburn as well, if it does get onto National 1 which I suspect it will at least for a trail period with the reduced rates being offered at the moment.

What would be the difference between this Gold and the other Golds? and doesn't Johnny Walker and David Jensen (and possibly even Tony Blackburn) have perfectly secure jobs already? and could a radio station survive by appealing to a narrow range of people in their late 50s to mid 60s. I'm moving that way age wise but I rather like to hear some new music too, and my tastes have broadened beyond the top 40 of my early teenage years.

I've just been listening to a test from Radio One Gold. It's very 60s pirate sounding and their Radio One Gold jingles are a bit naff... actually I think they over did it with the jingles in general, but not a bad sounding station if you liked the 60's offshore pirate stations.

It sounds a bit like Radio England but without the dj's - Take a listen.

Well, listening to the "test" mp3 this could definitely be RIGHT up my street and what I've been banging on about for a while. For me, the acid test will be the playlist - it needs to be HUGE and not just trotting out the same old tired fave staples a la the classic Gold stations.

Pirate BBC Essex has consistently shown a good reaction for 60s music and if this covers, say, mid 50s to mid 70s, then it will have my vote.

If they can get the ad agencies behind them, don't forget us baby boomers are the largest demographic group and totally ignored by current music radio.

Sorry guys but I couldn't resist it.

spoiler:
It's amazing what you can do using Winamp a few plug-ins and some mp3's.

Looks like it could be right up my street. Will be great if they get on Digital One.

Fingers crossed.
