Just seen an advert for the community shield Man utd v Chelsea on sunday, featuring Chelsea's goal in the FA Cup final and Chelsea lifting the trophy. So they are allowed to show some of the coverage from the final even thoguh they do not have the rights.

But they don't have the rights for the FA Cup, highlights included, which was the OP's point.

I believe the Community Shield rights entitle SKY to X number of seconds of FA Cup footage for promotion etc.

Yes. It would be on Sky Sports 1 if there wasn't an ever so slightly higher-profile event this weekend...

I expect Sky and ESPN will battle it out for the available FA Cup rights.

I am sure the BBC will be desperate to get some access to the FA Cup back too though. So, perhaps we will end up with a 3 way split of the rights like the last time ITV had live rights in the late 90s??

Back then, ITV & Sky each had live games with highlights on BBC Match of the Day.

If the BBC get rights, ITV could possible sue as they were sold exclusive FTA rights

Are you sure?

If that is true, couldn't ITV have sued Setanta for showing the FA Cup final FTA last season? Although this might have been a special case as it is a listed event and STV decided in their wisdom not to bother showing it.

Anyway, I imagine if the rights do end up getting carved up 3 ways similarly to how they were in the late 90s this would have to be with ITV agreement.

I think Setanta showing the Cup Final free to air wasn't a problem as a) it wasn't free on Freeview and b) they didn't promote it that heavily. And it got virtually no viewers anyway so the casual audience either didn't realise it was FTA, or saw no reason to choose Setanta's coverage.

But if the Cup Final was on the BBC, ITV's audience for the final would collapse because it'd be available to every viewer in Britain, unlike Setanta, and the casual audience would no doubt choose their coverage over ITV's. So ITV would be massively against that. The only alternative is for the Beeb to get some rights but not allow them to show the final live, but I don't think that'd be a deal many broadcasters would be happy with.

I don't think that it has been announced anywhere whether ITV has taken up its first refusal for the (ex-Setanta)England friendlies either. My guess is that this will be sorted out together with the outcome of the FA Cup deal.

There's already plenty of good football available FTA, so ideally, the best thing would be for Setanta's rights to go to either Sky or ESPN. I'd have thought ESPN would be the favourites to get it - and they need it more than Sky do. The sticking point is the cost. ESPN are far less inclined to throw money around than Setanta were, and will be determined to get a cut-price deal.

Yes there is no way ITV would agree to go head-to-head against the BBC for LIVE coverage of the FA Cup final.

That is not to say they would necessarily be against the BBC showing highlights or even perhaps a small number of live games in earlier rounds. This would probably save ITV some money, which they may want to do to offset the additional cost of the ex-Setanta England friendlies??

All pure speculation of course, and we will have to wait and see what happpens.

They're showing a game in September against either Slovenia or Slovakia (I ALWAYS get the two mixed up) which would have been on Setanta

Source was an article on the ITV website. If anyone wants the link to it, I'll try and look.

I could not find that on itv.com.

According to http://www.live-footballontv.com/liv...all-on-tv.html it is still to be decided.

Sat 5th Sep England V Slovenia International Friendly TBC TBC

ITV alreaady have rights to the highlights of course.

England did beat Slovakia 4 - 0 back in March which was live on ITV.

I would be surprised if these rights ended up anywhere other than ESPN.

It would be a nice luxury for Sky if they got them back but it probably wouldn't result in more than a handful of extra subscriptions. ESPN's need is surely greater, it's just a question of how much they're prepared to pay. Ultimately the FA surely won't risk having the rights go unsold, devaluing the competition?

Although England play Slovenia in September. I didn't write that article!

Sky may play hardball if they know that ESPN don't want the rights bidding high enough to be reasonable (way above what the BBC could afford) but not paying a fortune.

The FA would be sensible to allow Sky/ESPN/BBC to bid for just two games per round as Sky seem to be showing Championship games on Fridays now, and from next year perhaps Monday night Premier League coverage. ESPN have commitments across the weekend as well so it would be tricky to schedule three games per weekend. The BBC could bid for the rights (I think) but again three games a weekend would be difficult to schedule- plus ITV would be miffed at paying massively over the odds for pretty much the same rights.

Thankyou. £2m for an England friendly seems very expensive.

The BBC can't bid for the rights. ITV have exclusive FTA rights.

However, having two matches each on ITV, Sky and ESPN could be a possibility. Sky could then have in-vision reporters on Gillette Soccer Saturday and highlights on Goals on Sunday, both greatly missed last season. But would all three show the final??
