season 8 was probably the best season of smallville so far, even without Lex! I think season 9 may top it what with Clark embracing his destiny more

Hey, one question! Been a member of DS for years, and Ive started numerous threads over this time. Never realised you had to request permission for this! Or am I missing something??

It's just always best so there aren't a load of season 9 threads floating about. More good practice than anything.

The promo looks really good. I only watched Smallville season 1 way back when it first appeared on TV and have never really given the show another chance. Judging by the prmo it loos like the series has taken a darker tone and abadoned its Dawson Creekesque teenybopper feel of the earlier seasons. Im actually considering giving the series a chance and might watch it from the start over the autumn / winter months - even though the episode count up until season 8 stands at a mamoth 174 episodes!!!!!!!!

Is this still on? Is it still basically Buffy's Creek (teen ambraces destiny with angst), or is it something ele. How would posters describe it in one sentence to rope in a casual viewer?

(Note that i watched the first few years and lost interest from about series 4 onwards. I'm not dissing those who watch it, but unless I can be convinced otherwise I can't see myself tuning in)

I asked if they could update the title of the Season 8 thread to included Season 9, but they said:

"as it is a different season we would prefer it if you started a new thread"

so I have.

"Smallville" is about superheroes-and-villains, and the struggles they face balancing who they are with the power they have, as they try to find - and make - their place in society.

Or, simply: it's the show "Heroes" should have become. It's a completely different series to how it used to be. The narrative Season 8-onwards is very tight, and very serialised. They have fewer lead characters, but focus a lot of time on them.

You can probably miss out Season 5 - 7, and just watch from Season 8 onwards. I would say Season 8 is one of the most successful attempts in Hollywood to refresh a franchise without actually rebooting it. Or you could just watch this link, and tune in from Season 9 onwards: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxZk1yi8jsE

I wouldn't describe it exactly like that. It's still when stripped down about Superman before he becomes who we know him as today.

So, the series drags on Every ep I've ever seen, we have the following: Clark making moon eyes at Lana. Lana looking tragic. Clark wondering if Lex is evil. Lex being evil, but nobody noticing. Lex having issues with his father.

I cannot believe they have wrung it all out for 9 years now!!!!

Ok, I apologise for the interruption, please carry on

It hardly "dragging on" as you put it and you obviously haven't seen it for a few years as Lex has been gone for a while now

I do wish people who dislike the series wouldn't bother posting in a thread thats made for discussion of the new season. Why waste your time and ours?

I actually semi-ripped off some propaganda PS3 came up with last year, in the hopes of enticing a new viewer, but nm.

I do like the sound of that. I'll try to get my hands on season 8, and will give season 9 a try then. Thanks!

"They have fewer lead characters, but focus a lot of time on them."

Care to explain that bit? Specifically in relation to Lois, Jimmy and Davis (ep 12-22) last season.

Most series have lead casts that number between 10 to 15 actors, but SV S8 only had 8 lead actors, and most the time only 4 or 5 appear in any given episode, except the finale.

It's because of this that brand new characters like Tess and Davis were able to be incredibly fleshed out, in episodes like "Prey" and "Turbulence".

Lois and Jimmy's roles for Season 8 were to be supporting characters to Clark, Chloe and Davis' storylines, so taking that into consideration, they were given a lot of screentime. A regular series would never even consider having an episode like "Stiletto", but SV did, and it paid off imo, showing a side to Lois we hadn't seen before.

From Kryptonsite:

This season, Clark and Chloe are in 22 episodes, Lois is in 18 episodes, Tess is in 17 episodes, and Oliver and Zod are in 16 episodes.

they need to make this season very good after that poor excuse for a season final last series.

Indeed, most anti-climactic boss fight ever! I was gearing up for something big

I do wonder if this will be the last season, cause they are moving it to the second slowest tv night ratings wise in the US.

The reason for the move to Fridays is because the CW wants to make it a more viable slot for their programming, by increasing the night's average ratings. The easiest way for them to do that was by moving their No. 1 series over to the night - it's sort of like an experiment.

Given the hype, and that SV's core audience is somewhere between 3.5 to 4 million, I think the show will do alright. (I predict it'll average between 2 and 2.5 million, with a peak of 3.5 million for the premiere.)

And if SV doesn't do well, I think they'll put it back on Thursdays asap, as it's their flagship series especially in ratings, and give up their plans for a Friday night schedule - because if SV of all series can't survive Fridays, none of their shows will.
