It's been asked before and no one knows.

New technology never seems to be out in time for the launch and when it does appear it's expensive.

I agree, until you see the STB's in shops - no one knows.

The latest DVB-SCENE #31 from August 26th. has an article about T2, which has the text:

This is likely the most informed estimate available in the public domain - IMHO.

Digital UK has suggested (on 28 August 2009) that Q1 2010 will be when HD Freeview boxes become available. That could mean as late as March 2010.

Quote:
A wide range of boxes, Freeview HD TVs and Freeview+ HD digital TV recorders will be available from early 2010.

For price indications, look at the cost of Freesat HD products.

No, because there is no 'Freesat+' only 'Freesat+HD' - so comparing Freesat+HD to Freeview+HD is the only valid comparison.

As I've said all along, I would expect boxes and sets to be available early next year, with a slight chance of small numbers late this year - but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting.

I would certainly expect early Freeview+HD boxes to be a similar price to Freesat+HD boxes - it's not until the cheap junk manufacturers get involved that prices (and quality) will drop.

the technology in the boxes will be very similar, however technology isnt always the best way to work out a price

Yep DVB-S2 already available in HD sat tuners is similar technology to DVB-T2.

well a dvb-s2 pc card/usb is 30-40 pound so i think that would be a good price for a dvb-t2 card.
but dvb-s2 is not as new so i wonder wether to wait. my transmitter will get hd early on 2/12/09(pontop pike)

errr... Pontop Pike isn't due to get HD on 2/12/09, Winter Hill is. Pontop Pike is in the "will get HD by the World Cup in 2010" category. So no need to rush with getting DVB-T2 equipment.

Ray Cathode, be a little more critical of your sources. Be extra critical if you try to 'prove' a point.

Your linked document is NOT an announcement, but an Installers newsletter.
It does not talk about any delay, but informs installers about the new HD mux. This is first time - I have seen - digitaluk writing about the new DVB-T2 HD multiplex.

They most clearly writes:
"Freeview will be communicating details of available models nearer the time and advising consumers to look for equipment which carries the Freeview HD logo to ensure that their box or TV meets the required standard for receiving Freeview HD."

Freeview being www.freeview.co.uk

The industry said last year in an answer to an Ofcom consultation that they preferred the largest possible market as early as possible. The profit is with DVB-T2 chips - as with all silicon chips - in the volume. Of course those building STB's and IDTV's will reserve the early chips for the more expensive STB and IDTV models.

However, if a DVB-T2 chip can sell a STB or even better a new IDTV, say at the current DVB-T/MPEG-4 price point - believe me - DVB-T2 chip will very soon be in all UK (and Finish) DTT products.
Chip production capacity should not be a problem in this time of economic crisis.

Microsoft and NXP will support DVB-T2 on the new Windows 7 version. A PC card/USB may, however, not be a priority product to get out early.

Pontop Pike will get the HD mux 'ahead of the World Cup in June 2010.', but not in December.

It is the third iteration or amendment of the same document; the previous versions contained comments referring to delays in delivery of HD Freeview boxes to Q1 2010 attributed to the DTG and that any updates would be published on the Freeview website. I mentioned it before but cannot now find my DS post about it.

I'd say a good £150 - £200 that's what Freesat HD boxes cost new. A Freeview HD box at a guess will be £100 and a PVR probably as high as £250 depending on the make. I'd imagine Humax, Sony will be making them and no doubt they will lower costs eventually with cheap HD boxes.

Hannington isn't mentioned as an early adopter to DVB-T2 Freeview HD. Your usual DSO date will apply.

North West England [Winter Hill] starts the process, then "by the world cup in 2010", Central Scotland [Black Hill], Tyne [Pontop Pike], S&W Yorks [Emley Moor], W Mids [Lichfield] and the already DSO'd areas should follow.

Hannington won't have HD until its DSO in March 2012.

I don't understand your bit about it being a back up to London if CP goes down ? You can receive Hannington in parts of west and south London, but very few people bother to, so how could it be a back up ?

had it in the description for hannington and it said hannington has an emergency mode should crystal palace encounter issues.

GBP183.15 according to http://www.amazon.co.uk/SAGEM-ITD81B...1660395&sr=8-3

I make no claim as to whether this is truly a Freeview HD box but it says it is.

And to that you may add London(CP) in December and all post-DSO areas shortly after December 2. or a little later.

Yes, (it was me that wrote that on the mb21 page ) that's should Crystal Palace lose its analogue input feed, something quite different. Hannington plays no part in Crystal Palace's DTT resilience.

Ahh, right, me gets confused easily.

yes that is the site I was referencing to.

this was the phrase:

Quote:
"Other signals from this station can be received fairly easily in parts of South London and Hannington transmissions can provide an emergency programme feed to Crystal Palace, should its normal source fail" - Mark Carver, mb21
