NCAA Football 09/10 - "100,000 Drunken Students Can't Be Wrong"

In the light of ESPNA now reaching a lot more homes, including my own, it seems to make sense to have a thread dedicated to the NCAA Football season that starts tonight!. 26 live games over the course of September alone is a fantastic entry to either college football, or football as a whole.

Don't let the 'college' element put you off, unlike the 5-aside soccer tournament during my uni years which were watched by a grand total of about 30 people, the stadiums at college games pack out to over 100,000 people in some cases and the teams are hugely popular in their respective areas. This is where the future NFL stars are made, so get the heads up before the drafts next year!

It's my first year watching both NFL/NCAA after a summer of reading up, watching old matches etc so looking forward so following a season in it's entirety. Already owning a UCLA college shirt to me seemed a good enough reason to pick them as my side, and luckily there's an as-live game in a week or so for me on ESPNA.

Two posters in the Broadcasting forum put together a schedule for September, and the ESPNA Sep/Oct schedule is available to download from here to check for as lives/highlights. I've edited and combined the lists provided before to put the BST dates on rather than the EST dates to avoid confusion. Ie Wednesday 3rd Septembers game between NC and SC is listed as Thursday 4th September at 12:00am midnight live. As usual, latenight games seem to be simulcast on ESPN/ESPNHD in widescreen and hopefully HD and without bottomline, whereas weekend afternoon games are easier viewing but 4x3 fixed on ESPNA.

04/09 North Carolina State vs. South Carolina - 12am
04/09 Boise State vs. Oregon - 3am
05/09 Ohio State vs. Navy - 5pm
05/09 Oklahoma State vs. Georgia - 8:30pm
06/09 Virginia Tech vs. Alabama - 1am
06/09 Missouri vs Illinois - 8am (as live)
06/09 Maryland at California - 1:30pm (as live)
06/09 Memphis vs. Ole Miss - 8:30pm
07/09 Rutgers vs. Cincinnati - 9pm
08/09 Florida State vs. Miami (FL) - 1am
11/09 Georgia Tech vs. Clemson - 12:30am
12/09 Wisconsin vs. Fresno State - 5pm
12/09 Michigan vs. Notre Dame - 8:30pm
13/09 Ohio State vs. USC - 1am
13/09 UCLA at Tennessee - 9:30am (as live)
18/09 Miami (FL) vs. Georgia Tech - 12:30am
19/09 North Carolina vs. East Carolina - 5pm
19/09 Florida vs. Tennessee - 8:30pm
20/09 Texas vs. Texas Tech - 1am
20/09 Utah at Oregon - 9:30am (as live)
25/09 South Carolina vs. Ole Miss - 12:30am
26/09 Oregon vs. California - 8:30pm
27/09 Penn State vs. Iowa - 1am
27/09 TBA (ESPN) - 7.30am (as live)
27/09 TBA (CBS) - 10am (as live)
27/09 - Notre Dame at Purdue - 1pm (as live)

As you can see, the big college day is Saturday, and for September ESPN are treating us to 3pm to 3.30am nonstop football action, including College Gameday and College Scoreboard shows in between the live games.

Unfortunately, there's no repeat of the College Gameday Preview Show that's been on a few times (and hopefully sitting on my V+ ready to watch this evening) but I'm sure College Football Live at 10.30pm tonight will be adequate preparation for the 2 live games starting at midnight this evening.

Fingers crossed for a good season, and a continuation of the excellent coverage we're being provided for the opening month (with NHL season starting in October, there's unlikely to be as many live games until the end of the baseball season).

I love how college football gets more fans in to there stadiums then the NFL. And this shows how popular it is. Michigan State get like 110.000 into there stadium every home game.

Who do you all root for?

My main team is Penn State

Then I keep a close eye on Massachusetts, Boston College, Notre Dame and Michigan State.

Ohio and USC are also good to watch. And this season we should see the progress of Berkley who plays for the USC trojans. IMO he will be the best QB this season.

It will be a very close game, but I think NC will just scrap out a win

But man, what back to back games we have next saturday

12/09 Michigan vs. Notre Dame - 8:30pm
13/09 Ohio State vs. USC - 1am

I'm looking forward to the Michigan vs Notre Dame game. The atmosphere will be awesome. And the game after that, Ohio vs USC could very easily be the final 2 teams left at the end of the season.

I have to support NC simply because they're called WOLFPACK which is awesome. SC are called Gamecocks, which is... just not good.

North Carolina ain't playing tonight... NC State is playing tonight. And only inbred rednecks root for them, I think... but that goes for South Carolina as well. I'm hoping for an ugly game with South Carolina winning on an embarrassing State mistake.

Overrated. If Yates stays healthy, UNC overtakes this year.

Red.

Confusing NC State and North Carolina is somewhat akin to confusing Man City and Man Utd, though North Carolina's rivalry with Duke is somewhat more intense.

North Carolina State are in the red.

Great start for South Carolina. But I guess the NCS RB is just getting rid of the rust after that fumble, its his first game in 2 years after injurys.

In basketball the bigger rivalry is dook... in football, it's NC State. It's mostly about who's more consistently competitive.

How do they get all the fans to wear either red or white and not their own clothes?

In the US, most games only have home fans. Because America is so big not many travel. But the ones who do make it go for a good time and beer, there not like soccer fans
