Defying Gravity

Anyone else watching this show at the moment.
great to see Ron Livingstone again, it's starts off a bit slow, but if you hang on to around eps4 to 5 it starting to get really entertaining.
I know it's part funded by the beeb, so hopefully they will show it on BBC HD soon

Watched the first three and almost died of boredom. Haven't bothered with any more.

Livingstone is always value but didn't care for any of the other characters.

Watching this show, and though I do like the show, it is a little slow, and I see why the have done the background stories but to be honest the could have put 20 mins of it in the pilot episode and be done with it, though I have a feeling that the past will be important to the show as a whole.

I don't see why people think anything set in space has to be fast paced and full of explosions, if it was set on earth people would probably rave about it.

Really enjoying DG,i really like the way its structured whatwith the flashbacks and the mystery of Beta, hopefully it will be a bit more revelatory before the end of the season as it looks like thats all we'll get.

I'm actually quite enjoying it, although paula reallyyyy get's on my nerves. Unfortunatley i doubt that it'll be picked up for another season judging by the rate the viewing figures are dropping

Nope. Forced myself to watch episodes 5 and 6 and there isn't much improvement. It feels like they are walking to Venus.

Charlie Jade felt laborious, but somehow seemed worth it, even without any big reveals, but whilst I feel I'm enjoying DG, I can't help feeling it's not just drawn out but a little too inane with it. It's really ever so slightly annoying in that I can see why, and the benefit of, the past exposition, but it just seems too much at the mo', and really think that a key turning point would be an episode that just purely focussed on the crew and the ship "now".

It's a good cast, and for the most part, decent production values, but just feel they need to insert some meat into the proceedings before my imagined storyline becomes better than anything they're likely to come up with.

(why oh why is this the only thing currently with a spaceship in it? )

Episodes six and seven have shown a great deal of improvement as there has been a lot more action but I actually like the slow pace of this show and learning about both NASA/the characters. As a space freak the CGI is wonderful.

I watched the first 7 eps yesterday, I suppose you can guess I was pretty impressed with the series so far despite it leaning a little too much into the soapy style narrative at times.

I lost count how many times I asked myself which idiot picked this crew for a long duration voyage then kept reminding myself it wasn't any of the ISO suits but the thing in the hold which isn't that mysterious.

Not sure if u will ever find out whats in the hold, because the great minds of ABC have cancelled the show. Who knows if they will be airing the rest of the season. You can't start watching anything now days and they cancal it. Same old reality TV as killed another show.

Bloody typical American TV Execs. If they buy rights to a show they should at least air all the Episodes. Even if it means moving it to a late night slot on a Friday.

The show was just getting good with episode 8, and episode that had me glued to the screen.

As far as I know (and I could be wrong) all 13 episodes of the first season have been filmed and it is co produced by CTV in Canada and the BBC, so there may be a bit of life left in it.

I think ABC complety advertised and scheduled it wrong.
"Greys Anatomy in space!!"

I have seen the first 2 episodes and quite enjoyed them and will wait until it is on the BBC to watch the rest.

If it is co-produced with the BBC, and CCTV, any chance that they might continue on with it without ABC? Or at least air the rest of the season? I'm kind of hoping that the BBC will recognize the value of the program even when the idiots at ABC don't care about anything that doesn't involve celebrities in sparkly outfits.

I agree that trying to market it as "Grey's Anatomy in Space" was a ridiculous tack as:
a) while they look at the astronauts personal lives, it's very different from the soap opera that is Greys.

b) ignores what made the show unique- a look at pioneering space flight, when flying in space ship was a risk in itself, rather than a means to defeat aliens or move from planet to planet.

It's slower paced, but I was looking forward to seeing how the mission went.

Great show really annoyed at it being canceled in the US before it was even shown here!. Last three episodes seemed to have speeded up the plot but I'd be really annoyed if our American brethren don't get to even see the inside of Pod4

I wouldn't watch 'Grey's Anatomy In Space' either tbh

surely it'll air to the end in canada? seen as it is a canadian and british production (i think) and ABC only ordered the series and didn't commission it. Personally i think the American way of doing things is flawed where they just cancel something half way through because it's not doing brilliantly. They did this with firefly but whatever network was airing it didn't seem to want it so they aired it all out of order and kept switching the times around so nobody could follow it. IMO with Defying Gravity they should have had them visiting Venus earlier on rather than having pointless filler episodes but heyho.

[quote]The series was supposed to have at least two more episodes that would run through October but the Alphabet apparently has another option for its Sunday 10/9c slot. "Brothers & Sisters" meanwhile, will begin the fourth season on September 27.

ABC is expected to release the official statement about the cancellation soon. Meanwhile, it is unclear whether CTV which is also airing the show, will continue with the remaining episodes.[quote]

Did they really market it that way, or is it just how critics attacked it? The show does focus quite a bit on personal relationships, and is slower to advance the plot in other ways. So people who don't like it do dismiss it as being a soap opera, it's not purely a matter of being marketed that way.

Whether they cancel it or not, I'm sure the already filmed episodes will be made available online. But the show won't resolve the story in the first season. If there are no other seasons to finish the story, it's bound to be an anticlimactic ending. Even if it's somehow more successful in other countries, they must have been counting on success in the US to make it economically feasible. If it's only a moderate success elsewhere, it will probably still be dead.

This is what I hate about serial dramas that are built around some great mystery. The odds are so slim that it will ever have a good payoff. Either it'll get cancelled before there is any satisfactory resolution or it will get dragged out to the point that the writers write themselves into a corner and prove they never planned it out well enough.

However, the show's future prospects are not exactly bright as it continues to shed viewers, and come in last in the ratings of the four major networks."
