Alexandra Burke - not very pretty!!!!

I do not know if anyone has noticed this but Alexandra Burke is not very pretty, compared to Leona Lewis, she looks a bit rough, as prettiness is important to Simon Cowell, I do not thinks that Mc Burke will have a long career, if her album or single fails, ie George Sampson/Steve Brookstein syndrome>

Yes, its just that with leona lewis she has a much more classic look which helps to sell records, while AB is just not viable enough to have chart sucess, its been pointed out that we live in a society that sees "black people" being "whitened" - Yes I am talking to you Beyonce - to be acceptable and I do not think that AB is very pretty.

If she had a different hair style, it would do wonders for her. Alexandra is a very pretty girl.

Are you saying that she is not as pretty as Leona cos she is darker than her?

... I'm sorry, but before I reply to this, I think you need to clarify yourself. "Black people being whitened"?

I saw a pic of Alex on the Mailonline site, I would have worn a thong with that Pucci dress myself just kidding... she's pretty, perhaps the OP is just not used to the way black women look which hasn't exactly been promoted in a positive way BUT she'll probably do well in the RnB world, at the end of the day if she gets to make a load of money and do the job she loves whether people think she's pretty or not is irrelevant.

How people receive her will be down to the way the media conditions them, using words like "stunning" and "beautiful" to go with any pics of her will soon rub off the way it does for every other female celeb.
Every time Leona gets mentioned there's a beautful thrown in and to be honest she has a unique look that I like but she's not prettier than Alexandra. Her [AB's] hair in the aforementioned mailonline photo is AWFUL btw!

In publicity programmes and adverts for albums and beauty products beyonce was "whitened" to make her look more Caucasian, and as Snow_garden who asked about the shades of colour vs talents, first of all I think that AB is not very pretty (FULL STOP) I am sure if she was caucasian I would say exactly the same thing, she looks a bit "over the top" with her make-up similar to Jordan.

Finally its been proven time and time again (may i say by pretitious (sic) academics that people who are "overtly Black" have a shorter "fame span" than those who are lighter.

Being dark skinned never did Whitney any harm

Yep, it means being very African and if you do not believe me can you name any singer (especially female) who has had chart sucess in the UK for more than 3 years (especialy connected to Mr Cowell, even Sinitta only lasted 3/4 years). In America its very different.

Well if we are going to have a debate about this I'll just say that I think Alexandra is much more attractive (pretty sounds so ditsy somehow) than Leona. I find Leona looks a bit drag queen sometimes.

Do you have a source for this ridiculous suggestion?

But I suppose it explains why Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston's careers never really took off.

You really don't have a clue do you. How old are you?

Fine, you don't find AB attractive. Leave it there.

To *suggest* that because she is darker than LL, therefore she won't be as successful is a pretty stupid thing to say.

Perhaps you made this thread for the attention, if so, congrats. You will get the attention.

If you truely mean what you are saying though, wow... Just wow.

Really? I've never heard that. What about Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, Whitney Houston...even Estelle?

The last two posts were posted after I had written about the American perspective, in America they are much more supportive of their talents you mentioned Whitney/Aretha/brilliant diana Ross (who as an actress was sublime (lady sings the blues) but I read about this a few years ago from groups who were predominately black I am thinking of Damage and there were a couple of other groups wheo were not supported at all that they all stated that their shelf lives were greatly shortened due to their colour (Cleopatra was another group)

I suppose it all depends on what each individual finds attractive. IMO neither Leona nor Alex are great beauties but still both are attractive in their way.

Yes, but these artists have had considerable success in the UK as well as the US. Add Tina Turner to the list.

And for every black artist/group that flops in the charts, there will be a white artist/group that flops too. Race has nothing to do with it.
