Christmas TV

Hi all! It's about time someone began a christmas tv thread. What does everyone think will be on this year? Also what do think the schedules will be? Less than three months to go and two months till schedules!

BBC1 have become very predictable with their Christmas Day line up in recent years – EastEnders, Dr Who, Strictly and a big comedy come back.

Victoria Wood is back with a special, So I think that may be the big comedy on Christmas Day.

ITV will have Emmerdale and Coronation Street, but will be interesting what else they put on for the big day, the last few years they have tried Doc Martin, Dancing on Ice, Midsummer Murders ... None of them bringing in huge figures.

Yea But The BBC have a strongline up which people seem to enjoy.
The BBC have the first choice in where they place Eastenders this year do they not?

And it would be interesting to see if soaps will be on Boxing day as it's a Saturday but know they have been showsn the odd time in the past but will this year be the same?

and then there's the OFAH prequel.

Love outnumbered! looking forward to that.

The Gruffalo. Love the book! don't think it should be put on TV. Doesn't do it for me.

Victoria wood should be entertaining.

I think most people have got bored with the non event that Christmas TV is. It will be the soaps dressed up with a bit of tinsal and some reruns of tired old programes.

The xmas episodes of the soaps are well just that a normal episode of corrie filmed for dec 25th as opposed to being filmed for sept 25th its just another day in soap opera land. I would like the soaps to some of them have the big story on xmas and some on new year so its spread out, about 4 hours of soap in a day is too much to cope with.

All the early series of heartbeat have xmas episodes, they're often repeated during the year, i've not watched the last series though so I wonder if they'll do a xmas heartbeat this year, ITV3 could do a day of hearbeat xmas episodes.

I think one thing will probably be certain and thats just like last year I'll be watching more repeats on digital as opposed to original programming.

xmas being on friday is really going to mess up the omnibuses. I often miss out the xmas day continuos soap night and then watch the omnbuses at the weeken. Thats not going to work this weekend though is it.
Boxing day on saturday will certainly mess with the scheduling. For some reason the broadcasters just don't seem to think these days that saturday needs anything much to be shown other than reality, lets hope they break that habit.
What happens with the sport though. Does that happen on boxing day or do they have a couple of days off over xmas as well. I'm thinking of things like racing.

The BBC can put on anything they want to, as long as it's not The Royle Family.
I absolutely hate that programme.
Notice I said "programme", not "comedy".
It is utter garbage

You didn't have to come into this thread, you know.

I don't why I''m typing that. You probably won't come back into this thread.

Last year BBC1's Boxing Day was Eastenders sandwiched between two film premiers - The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe & Pirates Of The Carribbean 2.

I predict their Boxing Day line-up this year will be The Lottery Draw and Casualty sandwiched between 2 film premiers. I also predict TV Burp for ITV1's Boxing Day but I can't think what else they'll offer . I don't think any of the 3 big soaps will turn up.

long as some imagination goes into the schedules I don't mind really...I don't want the same Idents on BBC1 or 2 and not shown too early either, last years Wallace and Gromit BBC1 ident was good, it went on for far too long and it didn't feel Christmasey too me, if it didn't have the Christmasey music the ident could have been use at anytime during the winter..i think the Christmas idents should have an element that symbolises the season..Santa, crackers, Christmas pudding, Christmas tree, a star, candles, holly, angels etc..

They can't do that, as it upsets people who don't celebrate it

I'm hoping channel 4 will show some crappy but classic xmas cartoons for the little one in the morning. Even through they tend to show them at 5am or something stupid

What I'm looking forward to:

Christmas Eve:
- My Family

Christmas Day
- Doctor Who - P1
- Sex, Drugs and Rock 'n' Chips
- A Touch of Frost - P1 (I'm sure I heard a rumour about this being on xmas day)

Of course, if frost is on xmas day then the OFAH prequel is screwed.

There's football on Boxing Day, so Match of the Day will still be on. It would be ever so tempting for BBC1 to just stick to the usual Saturday schedule with maybe a drama premiere thrown in around the 9pm slot. Maybe a two parter which started Christmas Day, or one which'll follow on Sunday?:

6.00 Hole in the Wall: Christmas Special
6.30 Doctor Who (Repeat from Christmas Day)
7.30 National Lottery Draws
8.20 Casualty
9.10 *Drama Premiere*
10.10 BBC News
10.30 Match of the Day

I don't know what else ITV1 can dod on Christmas Day. I thoguht last year they created a very good schedule and it was still annihilated. Maybe they should try a Britain's Got Talent or X Factor Christmas Special - just to see Simon's stunned face when it comes in at about 4m.

I was hoping that Sky 1 might have done another Terry Pratchett programme again as i did like the other 2 that they did..
But Im def looking forward to Dr Who ( naturally.. lol . )
Touch Of Frost will be looking forward to that if its true.. and I think I read somewhere that there was going to be another cross over for Holby City and Casualty again but Im not sure though

Christmas Day Primetime Prediction

BBC1
6.00 Doctor Who
7.00 EastEnders
7.30 The Gruffalo
8.00 EastEnders
8.30 Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special
9.30 Victoria Wood

I think with the soap placement in their hands, they may move EastEnders back and sandwich the Gruffalo with it. It worked well for Wallace and Gromit last year, and is at a more family friendly time. Considering the time of the Friday shows this year, Strictly should settle fine in the later slot.

ITV1
6.00 Emmerdale
7.00 Britain's Got Talent - The Winner's Story
7.30 Coronation Street
8.00 Harry Hill's TV Burp
8.30 Coronation Street
9.00 A Touch of Frost

BBC1's schedule will cause problems for ITV1 in regards to the soaps. Cue the normal Friday night slots for Coronation Street. Emmerdale would have to air an hour early so no clash occurs. Got no idea what they could air for half hour in the 7pm slot if that is the case though!

I honestly can't see ITV wasting the last ever Touch of Frost on Christmas Day.

True - more likely that'll be aired the Sunday before Christmas thinking about it.

I forgot about ITV trying out Dancing On Ice last year (which is stupid considering Only_You mentioned it earlier in the thread) and that managed reasonable figures - I wouldn't be surprised to see that returning. Or maybe they will try out an X Factor Christmas Special after all. That could take the 9-10.30pm slot. No drama is going to make an impact.

EDIT: No, an X Factor Christmas Special would be too valuable to sacrifice on Christmas Day in terms of advertising; more likely they'd air that the weekend before Christmas.

Dancing on Ice seems the more viable option.
