Life

Not the most imaginative name for a wild life series

But the imagery looked good in the trailers, and apparently tonight features a venus fly trap. Very strange plants

9pm - BBC 1 for those who don't know

It's all about Survival but they couldn't call it that because that title's already been used.

Three minutes to go.

I just assume it's to tie in with all David Attenborough's other series - haven't they all been called Life in some format or other? Maybe they see this as being his last/greatest series or something?

I love David Attenborough, and the filming of these things is always amazing - it's when I see things like this that I think I need HD.

The last epic in 2006 was called Planet Earth.

Even in not-HD, the picture looks better than normal.

That was unexpected.

Big up to the dolphins and their mud fishing nets.

Those flying fish were amazing! I've never seen them on film, only in photos, and I had no idea they were out of the water for so long - I always assumed they sort of plopped out and back in again the way dolphins leap out of the water.

And the Venus fly trap filming was incredible.

It fair made my skin crawl that thing. Mother Nature may be amazing but her designs leave a bit to be desired at times.

Those capuchin monkeys were like something from 2001: A Space Odyssey with the nut cracking.

Great filming, but the whole story is a bit disjointed - jumping from creature to creature, but with no connecting narrative, no structure.

Still great to watch, though.

Initially, I thought the whales had got the seal! Glad it got away.

Stunning filming. I need HD to completely appreciate this!

Thats what I said!
I really liked the frog who dropped off it's tadpoles into the leaf, that was amazing, but the octopus I thought was kinda sad

Not sure about which formats were used throughout the 4 year shoot, but the stuff of the Orca and seals was shot using DVCProHD, so pedantically and technically, not really "proper" HD.

Absolutely brilliant stuff. Watching this on BBCHD was incredible.

I think this first show was really just a taster to the series - hence the hopping about. I expect the other shows will be more focussed.

No one makes wildlife shows like the BBC.

BBC Bristol is the absolute Jewel in the BBC crown, probably the finest collection of the filmmakers working anywhere in the world.

Anyone know what music they are using on 30 second trailers for the programme? It's Sigur Ros esque.

Just managed to answer my own question.

Finally found it from the Soundtrack to the film Sunshine. It’s a track called ‘Sunshine (Adagio In D Minor)’

I had a photo of my Dad holding a flying fish that had landed on his merchant vessel. He put in back in the briny. However, he did tell me that these fish can cause injury/accidents when they 'fly' onto smaller vessels. I no longer have the photo sadly.

Loved the birds episode last night.

The seduction den was amazing, and I was hoping that would be the bit they would show how they shot it, and it was!

Also those birds that mated for life and then did synchronised dancing to maintain their bond! Awww!
