Christopher Ecclestone shows how to "act" on camera

Just caught this on "youtube" and it's a stunning lesson in how to act on screen...and the song isn't bad either

I am a long-term lurker on this forum but this video made me want to comment so bad!

I can't believe how much I miss the 9th doctor...I love the 10th and really looking forward to 11th but Christopher Eccleston is such an incredible actor...he can say so much without really doing anything at all.

Wow, that is impressive.

Am I the only one who wanted to hug CE after watching that?

I don't personally miss him, but I often wonder what it would have been like if he had done a second series. I don't think it would have led to the type-casting he was worried about and think his superb acting abilities could have left us with an unforgettable second series.
That is in now way a criticism of DT, his portrayal of the Doctor has been equally brilliant in different ways.

I often think the same that he could have done another series...

This has probably been said before but I think if he would come back and do a little something like Peter Davison in Time Crash that would be amazing...wishful thinking though!

What a mesmerizing video. And I've never noticed his eyes that blue before.

Did he actually ever blink?

Yest, but just look at how he stares.

Seriously, the few facial expressions he uses speak so much more than all the words that other actors not fit to lick his boots, such as Colin Baker, could ever use.

I don't think this is their best song. I am Kloot are great live and their singer, John Bramwell often does small gigs around the UK, he has the most beautiful, pure voice - I love that his accent comes through. And yes this is a gorgeous video.

Series 2 is IMO the worst series and that's partly because they just weren't ready to switch to Tennant's Doctor. Rather than improving, like the second series of any show should do (look at Merlin) it was like we took a step back and it wasn't really until The Impossible Planet (the last episode shot for series 2) that things clicked into place.

A series 2 with Eccleston would have been really interesting. Would it have ended with both him and Billie leaving? How the heck would Doomsday have worked in that case??

I agree, another series would have been wonderful but then I also think that David Tennant did bring the 'sales' element to Doctor Who which the BBC clearly adore- he seemed to be perfectly willing to appear on anything from Ready Steady Cook to Comic Relief which I imagine boosts viewing figures. But the downside is that there is almost no illusion to the Tenth Doctor character where as there remains a mystery to the Ninth character as it's so hard to find that much publicity about Christopher Eccleston. Whilst the rumours still circulate about why he left, and the official Russell T Davies explanation is lack of confidence in the programme (that I still find odd, why employ an actor of those talents and commit to someone as famous as RTD and not have any faith...!) I wonder if the endless media attention would have been a part of the reason for leaving. I must admit that I prefer an actor to be less in the spotlight but then I can't stand Hello, OK and the tabloid press.

I'd just like to draw everyones attention to this article, particularly this quote: Vsevolod Pudovkin (who later claimed to have been the co-creator of the experiment) described in 1929 how the audience "raved about the acting.... the heavy pensiveness of his mood over the forgotten soup, were touched and moved by the deep sorrow with which he looked on the dead woman, and admired the light, happy smile with which he surveyed the girl at play. But we knew that in all three cases the face was exactly the same."

Really????? And please don't get me wrong, its just that I've never heard that one before, the usual one that goes around is that the BBC peeved him off by revealing the fact he was leaving, or the whole Typcast argument. But lack of faith? That is the first I have heard, and especailly as an officail...and again don't get wrong but have you got a source to that? as I would like to see it. From what I have heard CE himself say in post interviews, and the way CE is quite a private person in real life anyway, and considering the way his career has been pre Doctor Who, he doesn't tend to stick to one thing, he likes to do what he can, leave a great impression and move on. Plus he said that in an interview that the filming did take up most of his time, so he could have easily just got tired from filming a nine months. He also had to do a a few publicity things when he started, Blue Peter, Ross, BBC news. By the time Series 2 came about and the show was a hit, its no suprise that the BBC pushed DT to do even more publicity.

I know of the Kuleshov effect but I don't know why you posted it other than the fact it is an interesting piece of infomation. the Kuleshov effect is due to the audience's emotional connection to the cutaways from the mans face, they then project those feelings onto the actor, hence after the shot of the dead woman they see sorrow in the face of the man.
This video is of course not an example of the Kulehov effect because there are no cutaways from Eccleston's face for the audience to create emotional projection. it is a single two and a half minute shot of Eccleston's face, with a slow zoom taking place throughout. there are minute changes in Eccleston's expression to allow this to be described as excellent acting, making the audience feel his change in mood an emotion, than simpily a projection of the audience's emotions.

It was on Digital Spy a while ago - I perhaps haven't articulated that very well. I believe that the spin was that the BBC were uncertain and had lack of faith in second series of DW which left everyone including the cast in limbo and it was because of this that the cast change was made. Apparently RTD said this in some interview or another this year. If I can, I'll find a link.

Anyway, totally agree with you Nine was fantastic!

Oh I think I know what your talking about now. Yes, the whole idea that they were not sure if there would be a second series or not, but then again that is a worry every year. However, DT was cast before the series even aired, so there would have still been a change whether they got the confirmation or not, as CE only signed for one year, and he did want the regeneration to be a suprise too. I have also read other people mention that originally the first series was going to be diveded in two, so technically CE would have done two series', but probably still left after that. I guess its something we will never know for sure, as CE isn't one of those celebes that will sell his story at any price. I think this interview is the closest we probably will get to knowing what he felt about the role, and what factors may(and I say may) have been involved in his leaving the show.

That is amazing - thanks for posting that! I can't get over how expressive his face is with so little actual movement. It's so suble. Wow.

Yes, that's the link! Y'know I think it is for the best that he doesn't say why for everyone's sake as I've always got the impression that it wasn't very well handled. I suspect that a lot of fans of the show would be extremely disappointed if he had been 'let go'. Not that David Tennant isn't good, it's just that the show needed someone of Chris Eccleston's experience and talent to kick start it and pave the way forward. I remember seeing that first trailer of the Ninth Doctor being chased by the wall of fire and thinking blimey DW has gone sexy Can't imagine any other actor that's played the Doctor to play that scene so well. I guess his departure and its' reasons will be one of life's eternal mysteries.

The closest we've got to the story of why Eccleston left is that the BBC tried to force his hand by 'revealing' to the press that he HAD left when in fact he still could have re-signed by that stage. Because Chris doesn't get involved with the media circus he told them to stuff it. That's what we can gather anyway. The whole show is a media frenzy and it's understandable that Chris didn't want to participate, he's a private guy and the acting comes first and foremost, not the 'celebrity'.

I absolutely think it's relevent. It's not the specifics of the experiment that matter. It's the ability of a willing audience to project emotion or qualities of performance on to an imge when the actor isn't necessarily doing anything.

Have to say that even though for me, The Tenth Doctor is the Top of the Docs for me, I agree that the first series needed someone like CE, in fact I cannot even imagine DT or any other actor, better or worse than CE, in the Ninth Doctor's role, and in all the first series stories. Saying that I can't see anyone other than DT in the rest of the series either, But yes CE was very vital in the setting the show off, he was the only thing that had persuaded me to check this show out!!! And here I am today still!!!!
