Smallville from the beginning on Sci-Fi

Is this worth watching, i saw one episode and found it pretty good, i think it featured disciples of General Zod. Is this the normal standard or was i lucky that day.

Opinions are much appreciated.

Yeah its worth a watch. Don't expect it to be the comics you've read or the films you've seen though. Smallville is its own beast.
When is this starting on Sci Fi? I would like to watch them again from the start.

In terms of you being lucky with that ep, hehe. Well the series loses its way sometimes but it has a great cast (barring Lana Lang) and it does cover some good plots.

Thanks for the heads up on this one, I never got into this when it first came out so am looking forward to starting it. I too wonder when it became HD, I notice on the first one on the EPG for the HD channel it is only "W"

Was it even in 16:9 to start let alone HD?

Once it gets going Smallville's alright.

For the first season though, be prepared for the much-and-appropriately-maligned 'Kryptonite Villain of the Week' plot device though.

Season 1 was anamorphic widescreen.

I doubt that it was originally shot with HD in mind, however I doubt that they couldn't make it so. Later seasons (6-8) have been released on Blu Ray so I don't see why Season 1-5 couldn't be at some point. As far as I'm aware they didn't change that way that they shot.

They're currently doing this with Lost where Seasons 1-3 were released on DVD, and then Season 4 was released onto both DVD and Blu Ray simultaneously. Since then they've gone back and released Seasons 1 and 2 on Blu Ray, and in a few weeks' time they're releasing Seasons 3 and 5 on Blu Ray as well.

Smallville was indeed always shot and transmitted in HD, so there are no technical reasons preventing a Blu Ray release of earlier seasons. However, Lost is a much more popular programme, and more of a continuing story. There's more money to be made in a re-release.

Smallville is being rerun on HD-Net in the United States, which also makes it less likely that people would pay for early seasons on Blu-Ray.

I have recently been rewatching Smallville... I had forgotten how bad the first season was. The Whitney-Lana-Clark triangle was soooo annoying and I have to say I didn't particularly like Pete.

spoiler:
I was quite glad when he left

It definitely gets better after the first season though.

I've been re-watching as late and even got to watch the end of series 1, start of series 2 in Spain recently and that was weird, hearing the dialogue.

In some ways I liked the first couple of seasons more then say 4, 5 and 6, all the stuff with Lex, the Luthors and Lana got boring. Those early Freak of the Week episodes were fun to watch. Having been a fan of shows like X Files, Buffy, Angel etc when they start doing a long running storyline or mythology type thing I get bored. I hate having to remember all the specifics. I also don't like being kept in suspense. Give me a self contained freak of the week episode anytime. Though from Season 7 it got better again and has been good since then. Currently enjoying series 9 at the moment.

Would you agree that it really depends on how you watch it? For example, I hated season 1, especially after seeing the improvements in later seasons. I also watched these seasons on DVD, one after the other, so the first season got VERY repetitive as I watched each episode (which would basically follow the exact same formula). If you're watching one a week, "monster of the week" is probably alright. That's kinda what shows like CSI do, just a different crime every week for the most part. If you're watching a DVD box set, the big story arcs are fairly easy to follow.

Probably the same reason I like Lost. Never seen that on TV but I love the box sets and thus LOVE the show.

I think your right that if you have the box set available the main season storyline is great, problem is watching it on TV week to week, or maybe longer depending on scheduling its hard to follow and keep interested in it.

I think in the last couple of seasons they've managed to combine the Freak of the Week Episodes and Underlying Season Story in a perfect way. You can have your stand alone freak element but in the same episdoe there are usually some scenes or something that builds towards the main season storyline. Keeps both types of viewers happy.

I would say the standard varies within each season and between seasons (though I can't really remember the first three seasons now). But, unlike with many other series, it does not get progressively worse, so if one season doesn't grab you the next one does. I didn't think much of season 7 but so far (from watching E4 recordings since repeats of season 8 just finished) I like season 8.

Personally, I thought the Clark/Lana relationship went on too long but the overall re-imagining of the Superman myth as the seasons progress is quite well done.

I noticed that the episode on Monday is tagged as being HD is this a mistake or were the first couple of episodes pilots so weren't done in HD? I have to say if it was just upscaled the first one looked very good.

Got to agree with you there! I enjoyed series 1 & 2, purely for their self-contained episodes and 'Freak of the Week'.
It's getting a bit too soapy now, and confusing (I cannot keep up with them, to be honest - keep forgetting when or where to find it!) Love Oliver Queen in it though!

Appartently he is being questioned about some drugs dealing in the US. If anyone remembers a story about the American Big Brother winner spending the cash on drugs.

When the guy who played Pete, Sam Jones 3, is being questioned also. Click Here

Because of recording clashes I am recording the catch up on Saturdays. Has anyone watched tonight's episode to confirm if the EPG was right when it says it was in HD?

It definitely was flagged as HD and I came here to check if anybody knew when the first HD series were shot in the States? Funny detail was that the opening titles very clearly were not HD, even if the actual show looked like it was. So was Smallville one of the earliest shows shot in HD and is there any website to check what exists in HD and what not.... finding it odd, that sites like IMDB do not carry that information, even if they seem to have everything else.
