Allen Fleckney on Atlantic FM!
After his sad and rather acrimonious departure from Pirate FM, the radio broadcast legend that is Allen Fleckney is back!
Yes, thats right, he is covering for Dom James on next weeks Atlantic FM Breakfast from 6am-10am! Cornish listeners can tune in on 105.1 or 107.0 FM or outside of the region (or in) at http://www.atlantic.fm By the way, I am in no way connected with Atlantic FM, thought id pass the message.... The playlist aint too bad either, give it a listen! Last edited by bcradio : 19-10-2009 at 21:41. Reason: error in typing |

Nope, not connected.
Several people have wondered where he will be next so I thought I would mention it. |

Fair play - I really do mean it. Alan's one of the good guys - and it's nice to see him back on air.

Is there a thread here about Allen Fleckney's "sad and acrimonious" departure from Pirate? I can't recall seeing one.

I wouldn't have thought so. I'd imagine there'd be legal issues with such a thread.

So can anyone spill the beans, or at least give us a clue?
Can't wait to hear him again though. Used to listen to him before networking on Plymouth Sound. |

Fans of both Allen and Pirate on facebook will know what I mean, it sadly ended up turning into a quite public row that did no one favours.

Pirate FM's facebook claims they wanted him to stay, they offered him a contract but he chose to leave.
Fleckers is a legend, but he's a Pirate FM legend. Shame

I thought I hadn't heard Allen on Pirate for weeks and thought he had gone off sick. Fleckers was easily the best presenter Pirate had, a genuinely funny and spontaneous guy with a keen sense of humour. Some of the off the cuff remarks he made on air were frequently very funny.
Well, that doesn't leave the good ship Pirate with much of a crew does it? The accomplished presenter "Buccaneer" Bob at breakfast saddled with a bunch of very mediochre young presenters that have only broadcast on commercial radio at Pirate Towers. Now that I know that Allen has gone to Atlantic I will tune in to his shows there. |

He was a 'swing' presenter back then, but it wasn't long before he was full time. I remember Pirate FM were doing stuff like 'lost pet' announcements and home shopping features (this was before ebay was big over here) something local you rarely hear on Radio nowadays. |

Pirate FM... what next
After their last poor rajar result, and the current bland output, how can they turn it around, they used to be a high hours station, but their current repetative playlist has caused them a major problem, can it inprove?

I know of several people that are getting fed up of Pirate (especially since Allen Fleckney left) and have switched over to Atlantic which have a superb playlist, great (and very friendly) presenters, and are live a lot more than Pirate. For me, there needs to be a management overhaul- thats my opinion. It looks like Pirate are a sinking ship. |

BCRadio - would be interested to know why you like to knock Pirate on forums like this... however when wanting experience at local radio who gave you the opportunity?

As for networks, to call these stations local is a joke. Snow in Scotland, storms in Cornwall... while in London it's quite pleasant and so they are automatically detached from local needs. Without wishing to get all nostalgic, I remember in the old days what a fine job Plymouth Sound used to do when snow hit Dartmoor in the seventies. Immediate response - no voice tracking saying what a nice day it is or there may be some snow later. An obligation at the time, yes, but the people who worked there were committed to "being useful" and not just providing the same fill ins you hear on any other station. I am not naive enough to believe local commercial radio today is a public service, as commercial is the key word, but so many stations lack any vision with the future looking increasingly bleak for those working in the sector and long term commitment by investors, staff ... and listeners no longer applicable. |

I also did work experience at Pirate, something I am of course grateful for, but I can't help agreeing with BCRadio.

Atlantic probably have one of the the best and original shows in the UK, especially for a local station!
