Virgin 1 - 24 hours - or perhaps not? (merged)

I understood (from the Radio Times etc) that Virgin-1 was now 24 hours. Last night I 'recorded' two programmes at 0400 only to find that it said 'no service' for the entire period. What is happening?

Sorry Heinz, I don't know what you mean. It was channel 20 not the Virgin+1. I am looking at Tackiston (or whatever its called) **specifically** because it does virgin 24 hours.

Virgin 1 is no longer 24 hours on Freeview,

It's available from 9am to 3am, this is because Virgin Media Television are renting out 3am to 9am to one of the girls-on-sofa-porn-channels .

A few days ago Virgin1 on Freevlew sold off its 3am-9am hours to (Bang Babes) London Ltd for LCN98 TMTV. The Virgin1 Welsh coverage continues unchanged.

The Virgin1 website only mentions "all day" and not 24/7. That ties in with the 9am to midnight hours now available one way or another throughout the UK plus a few hours extra.

LCN20 Virgin1 0900-0300 Eng, Scot & NI
LCN20 Virgin1 0600-1900 Wales
LCN35 Virgin1+1 1800-0100 UK

I believe another tart on a sofa channel is responsible for this.

Yes, Virgin 1 is no longer 24 hours on Freeview, they have recently sold off six hours (3am - 9am) of the slot to some adult phone-in show, with programmes continuing as normal on Sky and Virgin Media. It's absolutely disgusting behaviour from Virgin Media Television, and even more so as that Challenge Jackpot crap continues to air 12am - 3am as well. Virgin 1 on Freeview is basically 9am - 12am now. All this hype a while ago about them going 24 hours on Freeview turned out to be a load of rubbish, they're nothing but ungrateful sods. I hope they feel ashamed for what they have done.

I agree. Bad guys never regret...... I specifically opted for the distant transmitter to get the full 24 hours; clearly a waste of time. Virgin has totally ignored my queries about this over a period of several weeks. Never shall I subscribe......

Any more "babes on a bed" channels and I am going to start calling it "Birdview" - and not the type of birds that Bill Oddie likes to watch.

Utterly bad news for those who like quiz shows (the proper ones, not the call in at a £1 a minute ones) because aside from repeats of Millionaire, they're shown in the morning whilst Virgin1 is off air.

Casino games and "babes on a bed" - less chance of controversy and fixing that the quiz channels and programming had but with far more profit than what making and showing programmes ever will produce.

Lowest common denominator TV thanks to the free market approach that Ofcom has adopted and I am sure the Conservatives will follow if they win the next general election - without Ofcom if Cameron gets his way.

I was hoping to video the Scrabble programme, but saw there was nothing. In fact, I have no idea what the Virgin 1 broadcasting times are in Wales. The EPG says one thing and Virgin1 broadcast another thing.

It's not disgusting behaviour.

They are a business. Presumably, virtually no-one watches after 3am, and very little do before 9am. It's not a charity, why not sell off the bits that aren't making you money?

The hype about it going 24 hours wasn't because people were desperate to watch it at 7am. It now has a daytime schedule whereas you had to wait until 6pm before.

Whilst I also hate the increasing numbers of junk channels on freeview - just accept its a business and not a charity.

True. With their attitude i've always wondered why they bothered with Freeview in the first place. At one point they had Thomas Cook TV 1800-2000 and Quiz Night Live 2200-0100. Why not just sell off the lot.

If their business plan is to get me to subscribe to Sky (no cable here) then it's failed, miserably.

Somehow, I don't think Virgin Media have business plans trying to get people to subscribe to their biggest rival...

BBC 3 and 4, CBBC and Cbeebies all broadcast less hours than Virgin1, are they wasting their time being on freeview as well? Virgin1 is one of my favourite channels.

I fully agree with you - but they are pretty easy to just ignore. Even though there are loads more of these channels now, there are also loads more proper channels.

They have different reasons for being there. The BBC channels have to be on Freeview under platform neutrality guidelines. If the bandwidth limitations didn't apply most if all of the above channels would expand their Freeview hours.

In Wales
LCN20 0600-1900 Virgin1
LCN35 1800-0100 Virgin1+1
(ie Virgin1 1700-0000)

So 6am-midnight coverage.

I think that I said this before somewhere, but the old-fashioned way of doing that used to be to provide compelling programmes that people made an effort to watch, which would draw in the advertisers.

Sadly, times have changed, and Virgin Media have never, to my mind at least, given the channel the attention that is needs.

On a very limited number of channels with restricted broadcast times ... things are very different with a large number of channels broadcasting 24/7 ...

Does this mean if I try to record from Virgin 1 later in the day having put the tape in before 9am, it will only record the audio along with the "virgin 1 continues at 9am" screen?

So remind me again - how many full-time channels does Virgin Media wholly operate on the Freeview platform?

I'll give you a clue - the number is an integer, and has a value that lies between 0 and 2.

I'd be surprise that you would be able to record anything at all on tape from the Freeview platform!

... and in your view V1 can be considered in isolation from the other channels on Freeview ... V1 is unable to pretend they do not exist ...

I didn't say otherwise, but I did hint, although I might as well state it in plain english, that Virgin Media has not spent sufficient time and resource to properly develop the channel, meaning that it cannot really sustain itself over 24x7 operation anyway, and they seemed to approach the channel in a half-hearted manner from day 1 (all in my opinion of course).

And, judging by the way that things are going, a number of other broadcasters have now woken up to the idea that they cannot gain sufficient ad revenue from broadcasting (repeated) programming overnight, so they are tending towards leasing that space to the tarts-on-sofa channels (whereas previously it would just have been a home shopping loop perhaps).
