Drama & DOGs on BBC HD

Trying to watch 'Scapegoat' on BBC HD, but the DOG is barking and distracting me from the drama. I seem to remember Danielle Nagler, Head of BBC HD, promising we not have to put up with this distraction in drama.

What happened?

This is what Danielle Nagler had to say on the matter.
Quoted from BBC Blogs (October 2008) :-

I'm aiming to make sure that at least some of the programming which really showcases HD quality and experience is DOG-free. Hopefully, the irritation factor on the rest is reduced, while retaining the channel branding across much of the output for the benefit of those who may not blog but who do find it valuable. I am not sure that this is the final position on the subject, but I do want to give this arrangement a reasonable period of time to bed down before taking a view on whether there is any further adjustment to be made.

read all our HDTV postsOn past experience, I'll probably have satisfied no one, but I do hope that you at least can accept that I have given this a lot of consideration, and shifted the channel in the light of it.

Whatever you feel, I know that I can trust you to tell me clearly - please do. I really value this conversation with you and it is absolutely the case that I would not have been aware of the strength of feeling around this issue if you hadn't told me.

Danielle Nagler is Head of HDTV, BBC Vision.

Someone may update this info if they can.

At least she did something!

The DOG is, at least, pretty transparent and over to the left.

But you have to ask: if they can do without it for Drama (usually) then why not for all the beautifully filmed wildlife and nature programmes?

I copied/pasted the above from BBC blogs last night.
It appears, on reading all his back, that Danielle must
be stressed out over this DOG situation.

She started a sentence without a capital letter and
words go into each other without being spaced.
Someone in a professional enviroment should type
word perfect.

I'm sure the poor PQ issues are stressing her more than the DOG did last year.

There's now over 800 posts on the PQ blog and an upcoming appearance on Points of View.

DOGS don't seem to bother me as I get engrossed in the
action...but occasionally I get pulled up by family if I happen
to say - "I wish this was in HD" they would say get interested
in the program, you're always looking for faults

In some misguided way I find that the DOG can be handy on the BBC HD channel just to remind me I actually am watching some thing that is supposedly in HD.

There's 2 issues regarding DOGS
Depending on their transparency on screen - they either
annoy you or they don't.
The other being if you want to archive recordings and
you don't want the reference to the channel super-imposed
over it.

"I do have to balance those who find it annoying with those who actually find it very useful in navigating what are a lot of channels on digital platforms" adding with a smile " I could take it off, but I don't think I'm going to"
Head of BBC HD Danielle Nagler on whether the channel will continue to have a Digital Onscreen Logo (DOG)
Points of View - 2009/2010 - Episode 5

how could ANYONE find a dog useful? when you change channel the tv/pvr/freeview/freesat box automatically tells you what the new channel is, along with now and next, so it sure as sh*t isn't needed for navigation. will she ever come up with an answer that makes any sense? i sincerely doubt it.

I know I am in a minority here but I do find DOGs useful sometimes.

Especially BBC HD as sometimes thesedays the fact that it is HD doesn't stand out the way it used to (since the bitrate cut)

Dogs

I learnt to read while at school so if I want to know what channel I am on I can look it up in any newspaper, etc.
There is an EPG on most receivers,or at least a TV Guide so WHY DO I NEED DOGs to tell me, Senial dementure hasn't set in yet so I can still remember what channel I switched on!

Fair enough, but if it was not there would you have any difficulty finding out what channel it was?

Would you have any difficulty pressing the info or epg button on the remote?

So would it be of any real inconvenience if the DOG was not there?
