You probably need an optical lead from the receiver to the surround sound system.

You have discovered the major failing of many all in one systems. The near total lack of any way to connect any external devices to the thing. I seem to recall from an earlier DS thread on the DZ230 that it has NO digital audio connections of any sort, might not even have analogue inputs either.

I may be wrong but I think it can receive stereo audio back from the TV via SCART. That of course relies on the SCART on the TV being wired appropriately and probably will only work correctly if there is a direct connection from surround system to TV.

But you will not get surround sound via SCART only analogue stereo. So basically you are rather stuffed. If you can get the SCART connection to work then you may at least be able to get some sort of noise out of the telly to the surround speakers. And if you apply Dolby ProLogic it might generate a sort of surround effect. But as far as I can recall that is about the best you can ever hope to get with that particular system.

It simply was never designed to do surround from anything other than the built in DVD and is not meant to be the hub of a home entertainment system.

If you want that then chuck it in the bin, get yourself down to Richer Sounds and check out their array of AV Amps and Speaker packages. Through in a Blu-Ray player and you will have something that blows the DZ230 into the weeds. And it might cost less than 400 quid if you choose the right bits.

eg

http://www.richersounds.com/product/.../sony-strdh500
http://www.richersounds.com/product/...yama-nsp270-si
http://www.richersounds.com/product/...-bdps350-mrdvd

£360 give or take a penny or three

The nearest current system to yours is probably this

http://www.sony.co.uk/product/hcs-su...ayer/dav-dz280

which comes in at 250 quid and still does not allow you to connect anything external up to it.

You can get sound from your TV via the SCART lead that presumably you have connected to play DVDs. Go to http://www.avforums.com/forums/all-o...put-query.html
where somebody else has had the same problem solved (it really helps if someone else has the same unit and manual), come back here if you are still having problems.

I think you need to clarify exactly what it is you are trying to achieve because I'm not at all certain I'm getting the problem.

Fairly obviously you will get sound from the DAV230's built in DVD player. Now let us get the rest of the system clear.

If you have the TV set to BBC 1 for example, do you hear the sound from the TV channel through the DAV230 or only from the TV's own speakers?

If you now switch the TV to the TM6900HD unit can you hear any sound on the TV speakers at all?

Do you then want to listen to the TM6900HD via the DAV230 speakers?

So if you can hear sound from the TV tuned to BBC 1 on the DAV230 then that proves that audio is getting from TV to DAV230 successfully. If you can hear audio from the TM6900HD on the TV speakers then that proves that sound is getting from TM6900HD to TV. If you cannot then hear the TM6900HD on the DAV230 then there is obviously a break in the chain between the HDMI input and the SCART output.

In that case you may have to go into the menus on the TV and see what options exist for sending audio out of the SCART you are using. It is not unusual to have the option to feed the TV's tuner out of the SCART separately to whatever you are actually watching. That is easy to check because if you tune to BBC 1 and have that coming out of the DAV230 then switch the TV to the HDMI input BBC 1 will still come out the DAV230 speakers. There should be an option to change that, maybe on one SCART only so double check which SCART you are using.

If there is no option to change what is fed out of the SCART then you could be stuffed.

If you can't get any sound from the TV at all, even when tuned to BBC 1 say then that implies that the feed from the TV back to the DAV230 via SCART isn't working. Again that may be down to how you have the SCART connected. Try each SCART on the TV and a direct SCART from DAV230 to TV.

As I recall on the DAV230 there is a button to select TV sound on the remote which takes in the return feed from the SCART. Make sure that is selected on the DAV230.

If you cannot get any sound on the TV's own speakers from the TM6900HD unit then that implies a settings problem with the TM6900HD. The TV will only accept Stereo so if you have it set to any other format the TV will probably just sit there looking at you saying "what the **** is this!" So go into the setup of the TM6900HD and check it is set to send stereo sound via HDMI and not a surround sound format.

Once you get sound on the TV speakers then you are half way to sorting it and the above points can be checked through again.

Thanks for your response Chris, what I am trying to do as I thought was quite simple.
Let me try to explain what I have got so far.
Sony Bravia LCD HD full TV, TM6900HD super, Sony Dav230,Datawrite DVD Player and old sky box.
All above items (except TM6900HD connected via HDMI cable) connected to TV through Smart-Scart Lead.
I can get the sound from all (except TM of course) through DAV no problem.
Now I would like to get HD picture and sound from TM which I can't get through the DAV.
Now let me answer your questions..

Quote:
If you have the TV set to BBC 1 for example, do you hear the sound from the TV channel through the DAV230 or only from the TV's own speakers?.
Yes, there is sound from Dav230.

Quote:

yes, if only set TV sound to TV speakers not to Audio Speakers. TM6900 connected to TV by HDMI cable not scart Lead

Quote:
Do you then want to listen to the TM6900HD via the DAV230 speakers?.
Yes, thats exactly what I would like to do...

Quote:

Yes I can, BBC channels connected by Scart Lead.

Quote:

yes, I can hear, as I mentioned, if i set to TV sound from TV menu to TV speakers.

There is HDMI connected between TV and TM,but NO Scart Lead connected???

I can't see any button you mentioned

TV and TM set as stereo mode...

Right well that clears a few things up.

It would seem that you are able by one means or another to get sound from the TV itself onto the DAV230. And so it seems all the other devices as well.

If I understand it correctly the DAV230 and your other SCART based devices are all connected to a SCART switch which means there is only a single SCART connection to the TV?

That implies one of two ways for say Sky audio to get to the DAV230. The audio could travel from Sky to switch then to TV. Then come all the way back from the TV to the switch and then out to the DAV230. The second option is that the Sky audio gets fed to the TV and the DAV230 inside the SCART switch.

I have a feeling the second option may be what is happening here. When you are just using the TV I assume the other devices are in standby so now the TV is effectively connected to the DAV230, hence why you can get sound from the TV tuner.

The trick now is to get sound from the HDMI input on the TV to appear on the SCART output of the TV. Which could be the killer.

I just so happen to have a manual for a Sony Bravia KDL series TV to hand and it does not make encouraging reading if your Sony is similar.

The Sony TV has two SCARTs with outputs. AV1 only carries the TV tuner audio (and video). AV2 can be set to output whatever source is being shown on screen. But (and it is a real killer "but" this) it won't output anything from HDMI. It only outputs audio from AV1, AV2 or AV3 (the phono sockets fro Composite Video and stereo audio).

Which is a very large spanner in the works basically. What that means is that although you can get audio from the TM6900HD to appear on the TV's speakers it does not also appear on the SCART output being fed back to the DAV230.

A potential solution may be....

If the TM6900HD has a SCART socket and the SCART switch has a spare input you could hook up a SCART lead from the TM6900HD to the switch. That may allow the DAV230 to pick up audio from the SCART connection. You can still watch the TM6900HD via HDMI on the TV.

Not the ideal solution but short of chucking your DAV230 in the bin and getting a proper surround sound system I can't see any obvious alternative.

Thanks for your advise Chris, I did connect the TM to Scart switch, once again there is no sound from Dav230...
I think I am going to give up on this doing my head in...Maybe I have to put up with it until I get something that will work with all.
Shame dough such a big brand like Sony dissapointing...

Let me know if there is any equipment that I can use for my needs...

Thanks again..

It is entirely possible that the TM thingie disables the SCART when you use HDMI. I believe there is a version of the Virgin Media cable box that does this?

That would explain that problem.

What you need ultimately is a proper AV system. Something like I linked to in post 6 or for something a bit more capable that lets you use the full audio capabilities of Blu-Ray

http://www.richersounds.com/product/...ky-txsr507-blk
http://www.richersounds.com/product/...ann-sfx5.1-blk

Which would come in at around £570 with the same Sony BDP350 Blu-Ray.

That would replace your Sony DAV system with something much more capable. You would use the AV amp as the control centre for all the bits of kit.

Just plug everything into that and let it take care of switching video sources to the telly and producing proper surround sound as well from those bits that are capable of it.

Basically these all in one jobbies are OK for what they were designed to do. Just play DVDs from the built in player. I guess the likes of Sony think that anyone who buys one of these units isn't that interested in a full AV system so won't ever need to connect up a million and one other gizmos to it. So they never bothered fitting any sockets on it to let you plug other stuff into it.

Basically you are taking it out of it's designed comfort zone. Bit like asking Jenson Button to drive a Relient Robin instead of his Brawn and expecting him to be F1 World Champ still.
