On The Buses - ITV3

I have been watching the repeats and a standing joke is Arthur's operation.

Do they ever mention what op he had?

Only in the films. Not in the TV series.

I see this week On The Buses is on ITV3 at around 9.25 weekdays and they are in B&W could this be first series?

There is someone else playing Stan's mum.

It could be, on the other hand it could be the episodes affected by the late 1970/early 1971 colour strike.

Cicely Courtneidge played Mum in series 1. Series 2 was also B&W but Doris Hare took over the role from series 2 to the end

Not unless they had Doris Hare in them

I notice that even IMDB doesn't properly list the actress that played Mum in the first series, though it has been a few months since I checked.

I really enjoy this show, but the later colour episodes are a lot better, probably because they are more familiar to a modern audience (being colour); and they seem better acted (characters got into their stride, I guess).

I love Arthur's putdowns of Olive

One of the things I most enjoy about this show is its anger. The characters are constantly going at one another and I think that's something missing from a lot of modern comedy. People are so frightened at causing offence that they turn the comedy inwards -- so Ricky Gervais, for example, invites us to laugh at David Brent, to laugh at him rather than someone else. A great deal of modern comedy wants us to laugh at the often insecure central figure, the idea being to diffuse any potential PC criticism about the target of the jokes. But I love angry comedy: Alexei Sayle, Dennis Leary, Bottom... and On The Buses is a great, if tame, example.

As for Arthur's operation, it's never clearly defined; the whole thing being an obvious innuendo to the effect that Arthur is in some way emasculated and, therefore: (a) is easy to knock off his high horse and (b) "deserves" to be ridiculed.

Great show.

Thank you for that, so with that information on weekdays they have gone back to the start.

I enjoy watching the show but the one I watched today seemed to be a positive advertisement for wife beating!

Its a shame that while ITV3 don't seem to worry about showing B&W comedy they will not air B&W drama.

When showing Upstairs Downstairs they (apparently) miss out the 6 or 7 episodes affected by the colour strike that begin with episode 2 .

Although Ep.1 of Upstairs was also affected they chose to remake it in colour as soon as the strike was over otherwise sales of the show would have been difficult with a B&W opener

I have not seen the B&W onces before but of course certain colour ones over and over.

I notice in the first series the layout of the family kitchen is not the same as the later ones. I think I am right saying this.

Things were 'different' in the 70's at least there's no longer racism in this country............

Just watched a show which was shown on Monday.

Now in 2nd series as Doris Hare is now the Mum.

The bus uniforms looked more like the milkman's.

I think this is one of the most underrated British comedies.
