Have I Got News For You

Sorry, couldn't find a recent thread.

Tonight's episode was a chore to sit through. The guest line up sounded good but it was pretty terrible thoughout.

The host was awful. I thought she was pointless the last time she was on as a guest and saw a trailer for her own series after the episode and that looked like a shocker as well. Is she supposed to be a comedian as she didn't seem to come across as funny or understand the simplest jokes from the panel, whether it was Hislop & Neil's satirical humour or Merton's surreal stuff.

Mark Steel wasn't much better. It seems that he's always on Merton's team so Hislop can take a pop at him. Steel is a lot better on The News Quiz.

It's a shame as i'm a big fan of HIGNFY and was hoping it was improving after last series.

To be honest I thought she was quite refreshing, the guests all seemed to interact, engage in conversation and there was a fair bit of humourous satire in the show.

Sorry if it is contradictory to your opinion, but I was pleasantly surprised as to how I enjoyed tonight's show.

They did repeat my Nicholas Soames joke from earlier in the week. I should get a prize...or not...

As someone said of the similarly proportioned Nicholas Soames, 'Going to bed with someone that size, the woman must feel as though a wardrobe's just hit her with the key still in it!'

It was appreciated more on there, you bunch of philistines.

I thought it was fine.

Usual fare - the host is new, but she did a good job.

Some funny moments.

TBH,I still preferred it when Angus was on it.I don't think the guest host system really works.Realise I'm probably in the minority.

I think this show has had its day unfortunately. Merton is just spouting any old rubbish to get a laugh. Used to be good. The presenters the series have been woeful. Its all boring talk about politics.

Thought it was quite good tonight Not sure I find Mark Steel funny though, he overdoes his leftiness - all right, you're a socialist, we get it!!

quite a few strange and awkward moments where no one knew what to say. Can it beeb! or change the format / lineup

Merton doesn't say anything surreal any more. For years now he's just done as mal2pool says: "Merton is just spouting any old rubbish to get a laugh."

Trouble is, judging by the reaction of the others on the panel, it looks like the only laughs are coming from the canned laughter.

The problem with that is that as shows like that and News Quiz have lost, or are losing, their edge, the politicians are making themselves look like complete arses so you only have to watch the news on any given day to get the comedic effect there and then.

Question Time is also a good bet for this, such as when Eric Pickles made an idiot of himself over expenses: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94JgL0jmX0w

Just seen this trailer now. I can see from that, that "Miranda" is a TV version of her Radio 2 show, Miranda Hart's Joke Shop, which actually is quite reasonable but four eps of that was enough.

However, the TV version just looks like it's thrown away what it gained from being on the radio for unfunny bog-standard TV sitcom, starting with any subtlety. It was the same with Mitchell & Webb. The radio series are fantastic but the TV series pale by comparison.

I still miss Angus, mind you he left almost exactly 7 years ago - is it really that long?!

'Twas the worst HIGNFY I've seen in a long, long time.

Miranda was just awful and as much as I love Andrew Neil ... he clearly wasn't having a good time not being in the hot seat and in control. And Mark Steel and his left-wing leaning as a Socialist Workers Party member grew tired very soon.

Roll on next week.

Well, I thought it was one of the better ones from this series. (Would have been very ordinary in earlier series, but there you go, the series is a shadow of its old self).

I like miranda and thought she did a reasonable job albeit a bit different from the usual chummy host, had no idea her radio show was going to televised though, not sure that will work. Andrew, IMO rather obnoxious, even though I do enjoy him on the Politics show, Mark steel can be pretty funny, took the ribbing quite well, wonder if they had to cut some of his stuff.

still made me laugh more than any other show on TV though.

So write to Ian Hislop and complain. It was only mentioned/insisted upon at his request.

It was a rather lacklustre show this week. Angus was the best host of it. The guests this week weren't up to much, although Andrew Neil's grilling of the Hob Nob gate was funny I suppose.

It's a very, very old joke. I've heard it before and it was possibly on HIGNFY.

"Your" Nicholas Soames joke? In that you copied it from the millions of other people who have done it loads of times before?

Your Joke? I used that joke in 1976 and got reprimanded by my then wife for being rude, not about nick soames to be honest, but a wardrobe with the key in joke none the less

Oh god, lighten up, if you look at the link it's obvious I didn't mean I'd invented it. But if you talked about Soames in 1976, when he was thin, you have no sense of timing.

Agree here. Miranda was content to let the panel talk, usually you get superego hosts who try to take control, enjoyed the banter and thought it was a good show.
