360 Standby

Finally taken the plunge and bought a 360.

One quick question, does it need to be left plugged in all the time. Does it has a standby mode similar to the Wii?

You dont need to leave it plugged in when not in use. There is a feature where if you are downloading some content it will turn it self off when it has finished downloading.

Resets the date and clock when you turn the power brick off. Only uses a few watts in standby though.

No, they get downloaded when you login to Live (gold or silver).

It probably does if you dont sign into Xbox live but once you do , its fine.

I always turn mine off at the socket (only due to a lack of sockets!) and when I turn it back in the time is back to 12am. If I sign into live it goes back to normal.

when you switch the xbox off, the light on the power brick changes from green to yellow. So it is cool to leave it plugged in as the power pack itself is on standby

Of course.

It's no different to leaving any other product on standby (TV, DVD Player etc.).

The world isn't going to implode, but you'll be using a small amount of electricity.

No. The Xbox must be off at all times, even when you are playing it to prevent RROD. Sadly this is the only way to guarantee the Xbox will not die...

How many 360's are there world wide, about 20 million?

If everybody left their 360 in standby mode thats a lot of power wasted.

That's never happened to mine. I turn mine off at the mains every day and don't always connect to Live when I go on it but the clock has always been ok... unless I'm dreaming

(the problem with standby is that most people think it's ok to do it... so most people do it... and then we have a problem...)

Yup, there were blogs aplenty about it around the time it launched...

fine, newer models are better but still...

Anyway, PS3 is supposed to be worse;

At an average of 14p per unit, that would be £7000 an hour for them all!!

But your own 360 would need to be on standbye for 400 hours (nearlt 17 days) to use the same 1 unit, or 14p.

I'm only paying for one of them so it's not really a concern.

So your paying between £5 and £14 a year depending on which power brick you have, not a lot granted but enough for some people to reconsider their habits.

The problem with standby is that bright yellow light on the power brick! Only reason I switch mine off at the plug!

The 360 does lose the time when it's turned off at the plug, it has no battery. When you sign into Live the time is corrected.

That's not the kind of attitude that's going to save the planet!

Makes me wish it used more power in standby. The extra cost is worth it to annoy Al Gore. I will be on my death bed long before climate change becomes a real issue and by that time I will no doubt get some satisfaction that all the young and virile people are left on a dying planet Evolve yourself some gills you young whipper-snappers.

I doubt it's even that much, anyway it would have to be a lot more for me to crawl around behind the TV.

Good, anything that pisses off the tree huggers is fine by me.

Anyway if people are that concerned the first thing they should do is stop using the 360 and PS3 to play DVDs, the power consumption there compared to a proper player is ridiculous.
