Why ? some channels may ask presenters to wear one that does not mean they have to, if they chose not to then they would be criticised as well.

So the fact that they choose to wear one now makes this false ? What it does is show some respect and reminds people to go and buy one as its a very very worthwhile cause.

I'm all for the Poppy Appeal, but it's getting a bit silly on TV as it starts earlier every year (worse than Christmas!). I doubt many actually go into the studios determined to wear their poppy, but instead get one pinned on them whilst in make-up or whatever.

On Countryfile this evening, Julia Bradbury was on a boat wearing a life jacket and had one pinned to the life jacket!

Remembrance Sunday is next Sunday for the large service and the 11th by the day. So its not too early at all, they need to be sold for a few weeks in advance to make the money they need to make.

this really is a "dammed if you do, dammed if you dont" thing for any TV channel, no question they are dammed if they dont, and if they do it could appear like it is trying to avoid being criticised, even more so when its clear its all been planned and thought out in advance, for example a show like Eastenders

Is there a rule as to where you can and cannot pin it now?

I know mate - why don't they wear real ones instead of that unrealisting paper one with the black plastic bit in the middle.

Care to explain yourself or did you just want to light a fuse?

If the mods pick up on a post where you call another member an idiot it will usually be deleted and/or you'll receive a warning,it's against the DS t&c's because it's considered disrespectful towards other members.

Hmmm...

So how about wearing a pink ribbon for Cancer charities?

Or a Pudsey for Children in Need?

Or a red ribbon for World Aids Day?

I think all, including a poppy, are worthwhile charities that need as much exposure as any inidividual or organisation is willing to give them.

I think there's a backlash against the Poppy Appeal from a lot of people at the moment - almost in a fashionable or "bandwagon" type movement... And usually people have little or no understanding what it's actually about.

Firstly it's about remembering the fallen of the First World War - and all wars - and the implicity of all wars. "Lest us forget" - it's about remembering to try and stop the repeating of devestation and war.... It's ashame more people (including politicians, factions and the world's population) haven't taken more notice of this message in the last few years.

Secondly, it's about raising money for charitable works - helping families and servicemen affected by working within wars, conflicts, and the armed services. Whether any of us agree or not with some of the places that our servicemen and women go, and the things they do, they offer their lives in service to their country, carry out their jobs and some of them get injured or lose their lives - and they and/or their families need supporting after that.

Thirdly, and the reason that the poppies are paper/fake, is that about 50 people (mainly ex-service and disabled) work all year round to make the poppies. The poppy itself is a symbol, but the making of them (and things like wreaths), employs people that might not otherwise be employed. Surely a good thing?

I know not all of us agree with conflicts and wars (I'm very against, personally) - but I think there's quite a simple seperation from the politicians that create and cause such conflicts - and the personnel that sign up to protect and represent our country that then, as part of their jobs, get embroiled in such situations.

And the Poppy Appeal is something setup to help such personnel that require it - as well as creating jobs, and creating public awareness - and even more crucially in trying to get people to remember the horrors of wars and conflicts in the hope that remembering can stop repeats. Even if that last part seems futile given the state of the world - surely it's better that they try than not?

So - with all that in mind - I have no problem with any TV station, or personality, choosing to spread awareness of the Poppy Appeal if they so wish, and fair do's if they choose not to also... The same with any TV station or personality wanting to wear pink ribbons, Pudsey's, red ribbons or any other symbol for any worthy charity.

It's not compulsory, people only wear one if they want to.

People should be able to wear whatever they want - within reason (maybe a Swastika wouldn't go down too well).

Like on X Factor they have worn Red Ribbons every year since Dannii joined to promote World Aids Day, which she has supported for years.

If people want to wear a little poppy or a ribbon good for them. It's not a big deal surely?

I think with news programmes it's a little different. When you think about it wearing a poppy is the only political statement on-camera news people are allowed to make.

What political statement is it though?

Never forget that there's consequences to war - "Lest us forget" - surely that's a GOOD thing? And not really a political statement as such....

And then it's a charitable statement - as is the red ribbon, or the pink ribbon, or a Pudsey....

I repeat what I put in my other post - I think people get the wrong end of the stick (thinking that a poppy is pro-war)... And it's somewhat fashionable at the moment to slate poppy wearing by those on TV.

I always feel wearing a poppy or a sticker is a bit "Look at me, I give to charity - aren't I good"? Far more respect for those that donate but don't need to shout about it.

Yes, I kind of agree with this. I'm sure there are many people who put a few coins in rattled tins, wear their stickers - and poppies at this time of the year - and do nothing else for charity or for others in general. And then there are those who give more substantially to charity, perhaps quietly by monthly deduction from salary or by helping good causes, but who still feel obliged to do the 'coins in the tins' bit so they don't get tutted at... The recent article about Bruce Forsyth was lovely by the way, demonstrating what a difference some people make, discreetly, on a daily basis

How many presenters will be seen wearing red ribbons for World Aids Day this year? Very little I assume.

Agree, already mentioned it on another thread.

From http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8333733.stm

"Organisations like the BBC usually choose a day for presenters to start wearing one. This year it was from 6am on 24 October."

Not in the true sprit of it, to be honest.
