David Jacobi's performance as The Master was severely underrated.
Am I in the minority on saying this? His transition from the gentle and kind Professor Yana to the vicious and insane (and might I add a better showing of insanity than Simms Master) Master was one of the greatest bits of this new generation, if not the best. What do you think?

I don't think it is at all underrated, and certainly not severely.
On the contrary he has received a huge amount of praise from people in all quarters for it...

To be honest I've heard no praise at all towards Jacobi, just Simm.

I don't think it was underrated either. I have really enjoyed everything I have seen Derek Jacobi in and DW was no exception. I thought that the majority of fans enjoyed his performance.

In the Survivor games that Rita's Kabin runs, Jacobi's Master came in at number 5 out of 80 in the Enemies and Adversaries Game. Simm's Master did come in at number 1, but I think that coming fifth out of 80 characters shows that a lot of people in here did really enjoy Derek Jacobi in the role, especially considering the very short amount of screen time that he got as the Master rather than Yana.

I don't think it's underrated, either, but because it was so short and perhaps a bit understated, especially compared to Simm's Master, Jacobi's Master doesn't seem to get talked about quite as much.

I always think that's a tough one though, cause in part the briefness of his appearance is what makes it iconic I think. I actually think if this thread were entitled Derek Jacobi's performance as Yana was severely underrated I might be inclined to agree more, because one can get so caught up in the last 10 minutes or so of Utopia as to actually forget what a great character Yana was as well.... |

Personally, whilst Jacobi's Master was a thing of wonder, it isn't a patch on his portrayal of Macker Packer in The Night Garden...

Yes, I blame the under 5 hours of sleep I had, I thought i'd made a mistake, just was too asleep to recognise it, at least my sleep pattern is fixed now, I think anyway.

Derek Jacobi's Master was proper-scary. Brilliant performance. John Simm? Annoying little git, really.
Derek Jacobi was overshadowed rather than underrated, I'd say. Don't see why people get excited about John Simm at all. |

Claudius, Alan Turing, various Shakespeare characters, even Adolf Hitler.
To then play the Master, but for a few minutes - enough said. Sir Derek Jacobi, Great Actor. End of. |

I have to admit that when Derek Jacobi became the Master ...I was kind of hoping all the spoilers had got it wrong and John Simm was playing another character.
I was quite disappointed when Jacobi regenerated into Simm. Jacobi played it perfectly and really looked like a character who could easily best the Doctor. He seemed far more terrifying and powerful than the version Simm played. It would have been nice to see Jacobi take on the role of the Master for those few episodes..and have him regenerate into Simm in the next series. |

Jacobi himself said he would have liked to play him for longer. And I agree, a splendid actor, another reason for negativity towards RTDs stupid scripting.

Jacobi's Master was like Delgado's ie somewhat understated demonic menace whereas Simm was more like Ainley ie more manic

Maybe Big Finish could produce a CD play set in an alternate universe where Jacobi didn't regenerate into Simm

Simm played the role like it was intended to be when Delgado was the Master - the equal and opposite of the current incarnation of the Doctor.

I loved Derek Jacobi and loved Utopia...I don't think it gets mentioned enough as an episode but Jacobi's performance was totally amazing...the look in the eyes!
Also what I thought was cute was that in the interviews with confidential he seemed genuinely excited to have been part of it |

That's non-canon, due to having an alternate Ninth Doctor.
