I'm ashamed of what this country calls "legends" or "greats"

America gave us the most important man in pop, helping charity's, the most bought album ever released, countless number 1's (I dont need to say anymore, because you know who I'm referring too).

and what can we offer America? the likes of Kerry Katona, Katie and Peter, Russell Brand?

the only real icon in the UK is Elton John.

this country's talent is a joke.

There are plenty of talented "Iconic" British people - however they aren't media whores so obviously don't register on your conciousness.

There are very few genuine 'greats' or 'legends' of this country - and the majority of them have the class and dignity to keep themselves to themselves, hence why they're not plastered across tabloid newspapers every other day.

They value the private element of their lives, unlike faux 'celebrities' such as Krusty and Katona, who trade solely on their notoriety and shock value.

I don't think I have ever heard any of the people named in the OP being labelled as "legends" or "greats" anyway

The only people who refer to those in the OP are the guys themselves or they're PR. It's safe to say nobody considers any of them greats or legends.

Looks like the OP needs to cancel his Heat magazine subscription and maybe pick up a copy of Time magazine

FAIL. You need to expand your frame of reference urgently.

I dont think I have ever met one single person who would refer to kerry Katona/Jordan/Russel Brand as legends

Theres plenty of good examples of British legends listed above...youre obviously mixing with the wrong people if they think these are legends

The people the OP suggested we offer up as legends are only that in their own heads. Stones, Beatles and Queen are far more legendary.

What a stupid and bizare post

I dont think I have ever heard anyone ever refer to Kerry Katona or Katie Price as a "legend" or a "great"? So im not really sure what planet you have been living on? I assume you are refering to Michael Jackson in your first paragraph? Fair enough, but the UK has had its fair share of legends and greats.

Have you not heard of The Beatles? Or Queen? Or the Rolling Stones? What about all the acting greats we have such as Judi Dench and Helen Mirren?

Sorry but I really cant see the point you are trying to make here, and I dont like the way you are stating your own opinion as fact.

I would put Morrissey in higher regard than Michael.

Okay don't speak i'll of the dead..but seriously any realtively normal person would have been sent down for his escapades.

Talk about deluded.

I suggest we gave America the incorrectly placed apostrophe, leading to possession/plural confusion.

No it isn't! There are plenty of talented people in the UK, and there are plenty of zlebs/wastes of space in the US!

Have you heard of these people?:-

Dame Judi Dench
Julie Walters
Patrick Stewart
David Tennant
James McAvoy
Anne-Marie Duff
Maxine Peake
John Barrowman (he's Scottish by birth)
Jude Law
Hugh Laurie (who is a huge star in the US)
Stephen Fry
Sir Ian Mackellen
Joan Collins
Jackie Collins
Daniel Radcliffe
Rupert Grint
Imelda Staunton
Miriam Margoyles
Lee Mead
Connie Fisher
Denise Van Outen
George Michael
Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber
Sir Tim Rice
Sarah Brightman
Katherine Jenkins
Russell Watson
Graham Norton
Leona Lewis
Susan Boyle
Rufus Sewell
Hugh Grant
Helen Mirren
Robbie Coltraine
Ewan McGregor
Paul McCartney
Michael Ball
Anna Friel
David Thewliss
Billie Piper
Jamie Cullum
Robbie Williams
Take That

Those are just the people I've thought of off the top of my head (with no help from google or any other sources of reference - they're just people with talent and successful careers that I happen to have heard of and can recall by simply thinking "Who do I think of as a 'home grown' talented person?"). Most of the people in my list have worked in the US (or on projects which were broadcast/released in the US).

If you stop being negative and actually think about it, we have plenty of home-grown talent. Obviously, not everyone in my list could be described as a 'legend', but a number of them could (and are) - and I suspect that some of the others may eventually become 'legends' in the fullness of time.

He was, but he lived most (if not all) of his adult life in the UK and founded a band in the UK made up of people from the UK - so for the purposes of this excercise, he fits into the list of UK 'greats'.
