Found a lump

I am terrified...

I have found a lump on my breast...going to the doctor this afternoon and I am petrified he will tell me its bad news..

Hubby is away working and I dont want to tell him yet, dont want to worry him.

It is right on top, raised and is red. My head is telling me its a cyst but there is always that doubt.

Sorry to moan but I have nobody else to talk to and waiting till 5pm for appointment is torture

9 out of ten lumps are benign and women should expect to see quite a few in some cases. It is what is known as fibrocystic breasts.

No need to worry unduly as the statistics are very high in the benign factor.

I had a lump a few months ago and it was red and swollen as you describe. Turned out to be a cyst and went away by itself within a few weeks. Hopefully all will be well when you go to the doctors later.

I have one of these at the moment. Doing my best to ignore it but it's been about two/three weeks now. Should get it looked at but I keep putting it off.

If it's raised and red, it's highly unlikely to be tumourous. Still, a doctor will give you a better diganosis than random people on a forum!

I'm sorry - I didn't want to sound rude - I just want to make sure you don't rely on any advice given here. Like I say though, I wouldn't worry about it - tumours tend not to be raised and red, and even if, in the worst possible case, it was a tumour, it would be right on the surface and therefore subject to a fairly simple lumpectomy.

Must be scary, but it won't be long until you can go to the docs.

What did you do over the weekend, anything good?

Hi. PM me if you need to talk, I went through the same thing about a week ago (although I found two lumps and they were deeper down, not red and swollen). I know how scary it can be.

Just so you have some idea what to expect; my doctor examined me and then referred me to a specialist. She said they didn't feel like tumours and would probably go away on their own, but that she was going to refer me to be on the safe side. I've had the appointment come through for that and it's next week; a sonogram followed by a consultation.

As stud u like said, 9 out of 10 lumps are benign, so the odds are in your favour. Try not to worry.

Hi Gremlin,

As already said, it sounds like a cyst. I had a similar experience a few years ago, found the lump, phoned the Dr, got an apt for the same day – Dr said it doesn’t seem too serious but she was going to refer me for further tests “just to be sure”. I then had to wait two weeks for the apt, which were the longest weeks of my life and I had conjured up every worst case scenario you can imagine!

But went for the hospital apt and consultant checked me and told me straight away it was a cyst and once I had them once, I was more than likely going to get them again, and not too worry and to keep doing the breast checks regularly – and go to Dr if I was ever concerned in the future.

I hope the above helps and not too worry. Let us know how you get on x

I've had a lump for about 8 years now since I was 16, although it's not red or anything. It's like a white bubble, I have assumed it was a cyst. It hasn't been painful or anything but it is starting to make me self consious now, but I still keep putting the docs off

I may be mis-understanding the type of 'lumps' we are talking about here but I thought that the lumps that could be something to worry about are the ones found inside the breast - found by pressing down on the breast. So - with my limited knowledge - I would have thought that the ones on the surface are possibly nothing to worry about. However, I am not a medic and if it were me I would get anything like that checked by a GP just to set my mind at rest.

C K 07 - IMO if you have had yours for 8 years and it hasn't got worse then its probably harmless - but just go and get it checked

Hi all,

Well Doc thinks it a cyst that has infected but he wants me to go to the breast clinic in the morning just to be on the safe side...feeling a bit better but will not be totally happy until I get the ok from clinic tomorrow.

So glad I went to the docs though, he does not seem overly concerned and told me not to worry.

Aww, bless you.

So pleased that you will be seen in Breast Clinic tomorrow, not too long to wait to see the experts.

Just as others have said, 9 out of 10 lumps are benign, so try to stay very positive.

Will be thinking of you, and sending positive vibes, so watch out for them

Kobec, please take a leaf out of your fellow FM's book, and go to the doctor!!!!

I understand your fear, but you must get it checked, if only for your own peace of mind.

Please go...(((kobec)))

I second that Kobec...I only had a few days of worry before I went to the doc..please go and see them.

I am very very grateful to the NHS for the speed in which I will be seen...did not expect to be seen the next day.

And thank you for all your best wishes, this has made such a huge difference to me today, hubby back tomorrow night thank god.

I know, but I'm not in NHS territory any more - it costs €75 just to say hello to a doctor over here! I might hold out til I can get back to UK

Im glad you are getting an appoitment straight away at the breast clinic, at least you can find out what's happening straight away and wont have to wait around worrying. The doctor said the same thing when I went. I was reffered to the breast clinic but had to wait for 2 weeks. I had an examination and they told me it was a cyst and would go away by itself. incidentally in the 2 weeks I had been waiting it had started to shrink in size and the pain, redness and swelling had gone. I was still a bit worried when I was at the clinic so they did a ultrasound and they confirmed it was a cyst. It went away about a week later.

I hope all is ok.
