BBC receive complaints after incorrect spelling on an on-screen graphic

Erm, lol?

Complaint

We received complaints from viewers who were unhappy that the word 'damning' was spelt incorrectly in an on-screen graphic.

The BBC's response

This was an unfortunate human error for which we apologise. We endeavour to ensure that all our output is completely correct but despite our exacting standards, with hundreds of hours of live news broadcasting every week, sometimes mistakes can occur.
I think its quite sad how people complain because of one error on an on-screen graphic really.

Yes, I noticed the error but I never even considered complaining. However, I will confess to displaying a smug grin as I mentioned it to Mrs T.

I think this is a damming indictment of the current editorial standards of the BBC.

The license you don't pay

£9 is a reasonable price for a charity calender, get over it! Next you're going to complain the BBC doesn't distribute free copies of all its shows on blu-ray and DVD...

I love how you think it should be given to you free. Brilliant. Mental. Brilliantly mental.

Anyway, who actually has the time and energy to write and complain because a word was spelled incorrectly?

It is a great pity that the BBC went immediately into bureaucratic excuse mode about the hundreds of messages etc. instead of just saying it was a mistake and thanks for pointing it out.

You would think that they would be a big enough organisation to employ a press officer with enough sense to yank the juniors on the staff out of automatically making excuses and to inform seniors to stop the blame culture which causes people to act in this way.

Have the Daily Mail ran a story on this yet?

If not then the complaints will rocket after they do....

Yes they have stirred things up, and no doubt the complaints only came in from readers of the story: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti....html#comments

Incidently, the story was probably sourced from this thread as that is where the quotes were stolen from. Once again The Mail using any opportunity to have a pop at the BBC - pathetic they trawl forums in order to find their stories.

Thanks msim, thought there had to be an explanation.

You don't pay for a licence so nine quid should be easy for you.

Perhaps you should have addressed your complaint to Bald Rick instead?

You can rely on the Daily Mail - never miss an opportunity, especially when it's lazy journalism. You'd think that people (generally) and the Mail in particular would have more important things to worry (and complain) about.

Any complaints which included spelling or grammatical errors should have been put straight in the shredder.

Along with any that didn't...

I know there are plenty of people who are unemployed with more time on there hands than usual (im guilty as anyone) so they vent there frustration on trival issues from shops or TV, but this is beyond belief.

Guess it's the serial complainers in this country that keep regulators/quango's like OFCOM in business!
