Why Don't You

I was chatting to workmates about TV shows from our younger Days.

I Remembered a Childrens TV Show called Why Don't You.

I Loved that when I was a Kid.

Anyone Else Remember That.

Why don't you!
"Why don't you... switch off your TV set..... and do something less boring instead....why don't you....why don't you......."

It went something like that, I think! Ah, us kids of the 70s/80s!

Remember they had the Liverpool gang presenting one week, then the London gang, the Birmingham gang, the Glasgow gang etc......

I remember that I watched it, but don't remember anything about it. Was it set on a bus or something?

No, that would be the Double Deckers.

Why Don't You seemed to be filmed in a warehouse or barn.

It remember one of them that had been filmed in/outside of a caravan, I think the kid on that one was Ant McPartlin.

I think each local "gang" had it's own location. One gang was in a seaside cafe, I remember, but I don't know which one.

Anyone who watched 70s Why Don't You remember the "Doris"?

Ant and Dec featured on this, or either just Ant it was.

I'm not going mad, but in my time there was an ongoing storyline about the gang following a sheep...on wheels? I'm trying to find if it was golden too. It was like at the end of the episode, "Look! There's that...sheep!?"

If I have this right I have a really really vague memory of one where the girls challenged the boys of who could sit still the longest and the boys lost because they didn't know the girls frequently go to the cinema and sit through long films. It's a really vague memory but I am somewhat sure it was from that. It's the post above that just triggered this memory for me.

Of course I could be completely wrong.

The ironic thing is that as a child I found Why Don't You? one of the more boring Children's programmes, and so I actually would switch off the TV set!

Ant McPartlin was in the Newcastle gang, whose "den" was a bus because they travelled around the city. The Cardiff gang used a farmhouse (ie, a patently obvious studio set) and the Liverpool gang, who by the end were the only gang, had a cafe.

When it began there was only one gang, the Bristol gang, but later in the run it moved across the UK and in the eighties there were gangs in Cardiff, Glasgow, Belfast and Newcastle, with the various BBC regions taking it in turns to make it. There's a biography of Russell T Davies which says he was hired by BBC Wales to be a graphic designer on the Cardiff episodes, and when the producer got bored of writing the scripts, Davies volunteered to take over and carried on doing them.

Then at the end of the eighties the regional productions were abandoned, the show was made full-time by BBC North West and it was always the Liverpool gang. RTD's shows were considered the best so he was asked to become the full-time writer and producer. The book mentions that for the last show in one series he got permission to not do any makes or games or anything and just make it one long story.

After RTD left, the last few series didn't have any gang at all, it was made across the UK with different kids in each show talking about stuff they'd done. And that's it.

Yep, same here. And sometimes I would wait for the line in the song before switching the set off.
It really did used to bore me.

I remember watching Why Don't You.
The good thing about that period in time, regarding television, was that a lot of the programmes were from Europe.I would watch Why Don't You,then the adventures of robinson crusoe, the white horses, noggin the nog,the singing ringing tree etc.
Now,most are american programmes, and European made programmes that are obscure, like the boy from lapland, are few and far between.

RTD wrote the scripts for a spoof dubbed version of this for a Saturday morning kids tv show called On The Waterfront

Nogging the Nog was actually a British show

I used to love Why don't you
I mostly remember the theme tune but I also have other vague memories of it. Remember Ant 'him from Ant & Dec' presenting it once. Seem to recall them baking/cooking something every week. Not sure if the recipe was sent in by viewers.

It was sure a great programe, one of the best ever of it's kind. I just guess if I saw it on YV again it may "tarnish" my memory of it though.

Like I thought Supergran was a sensation for it's time until I bought it on Video and thought what load of total total old drivel this is!

Why Don't You? Why Don't You?

Why Don't You...just switch off your television set and go and do something less boring instead?

Sitting at home, watching TV,
Turn it off, it's no good for me.

Why Don't You? Why Don't You?

Why...Don't... You...Go, Go, Go!

Yeh, I watched a lot of TV as a kid!
