Importing a japanese game - being able to play them.

I was thinking of importing a japanese exclusive game/s in the future. I am not familiar with the whole importing process and how it works.

Even if I were to successfully import them, there is the problem of not being able to play them on the PS2. Is there any way to resolve this?

I notice you say Ps2, it would need to be modified to allow this or possibly an action replay cartridge may do it, perhaps someone else could clarify that.

The Ps3 is region free and any title from anywhere should work. Chances are it's in Japanese though, so unless you speak japanese or can find an online walkthrough ikt may prove hard to play. For example i imported yakuza 3 (well got my friend in japan to send me a copy) and played it using a walkthrough, thouroughly enjoyed it. I believe some sites offer an import service but not sure which ones.

Bayonetta has full english language support apparently.

Ps2s don't take cartridges like the psx could. But cheat discs work. There should be one that will allow you to play Japanese games. I say should because I only know for sure you can for dvd playback. Games may be different.

The PS2 would need to be modified with a chip, using SWAPmagic (or something) or by using a cheat disc as had already been mentioned.

The PS3 is region free for PS3 games only. You can't play a Japanese PS2 disc on a PS3. It will come up with a message saying 'This disc cannot be played in this region' or something.

Ah, yes, didn't really make that clear!

I've used Play-Asia in the past to pre-order Kingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix + and I got it on time for the official release date in Japan. I live in the UK too.

You can mod a memory card to act like an old action replay cart for region free though.

You will also need a 60hz compatable TV something you need to bear in mind.

This is actually the game I'm thinking about getting. It looks like a vast improvement over the problems I have with the original (lack of difficulty, lack of extra bosses ETC).

If it goes successfully, I would then import FFX-2 AND FFXII internationals and maybe KH1 final mix and the english version of the remake of KH:chain of memories (though I'm not sure if this one would be playable).

So basically I need the swap thing, do something with it on my PS2 then import the games from play-asia? What about american games? Can I end up playing them as well?
