ITV FA Cup coverage 2009-10

They'd better do a decent job this time around starting Saturday. They've chosen sensible live games this time for the first round involving Paulton and Northwich.

And Havant v Brentford wasn't a sensible game last year?

They ignored Kettering v Fulham last year in the third round.

I think we all know ITV could deliver a first class performance and still people would slag it off.

Two good games though, maybe one upset among them but I still believe games like Nuneaton v Exeter, Hereford V Sutton or even Stourbridge v Walsall have more of a banana skin about them

That would be because Fulham played Sheffield Wednesday in the third round of the FA Cup last year.

You're thinking of the fourth round, and it wasn't chosen by either ITV or Setanta because it wasn't the best game.

ITV rightly chose Hartlepool v West Ham, as Hartlepool were a proper giant killer - they knocked out premier league Stoke City in the previous round. Kettering beat Eastwood, a team two leagues below them.

Hereford v Sutton has score draw written all over it. Could be a good replay game. Whoever eventually wins is going to have a good chance of a second round TV game though.

I would hope so, maybe even a replay on ITV4?

Just get a feeling Sutton might do something - could be massively wrong.

Any Walsall fan will tell you away at a non league club is not the draw they want, Slough Town anyone??

I'm not an ITV hater ariusuk, just think the two games the network have got could be over very quickly, although Charlton are less nailed on than a couple of weeks ago in my opinion

Indeed.
Stourbridge is a good looking tie, but not practical for live television: They play on half a cricket pitch, and the only entrance has a low arch which prevents access by anything bigger than a transit van.

Kettering v Fulham didn't have to be the best game last year to get on TV. It only had to be one of the best 5 games which in my opinion it was. That said at least ITV picked 2 good matches for their choices it was mainly Setanta in my view that seemed to have the most strange selction choices.

Wasn't it Derby v Forest they picked-purely for the Clough Jnr factor?

Which in effect was just a derby match between two run of the mill championship teams-Clough or no clough.

It was also Billy Davies returning to Derby as Forest manager.

The stupidest thing was - considering the fierce rivalry/hatred that exists between the two clubs - that the game was allowed to be played on a Friday evening.

How do you rate it so far? Glad they had the Staines victory first in last night's highlights even though it was just a report.

LOL. I think you need a history lesson, Forest and Derby were huge clubs 20-30 years ago. Derby pull over 30,000 fans a week in the championship, they were the 12th or so best supported team in the entire country last year. They are both FAR, far from "run of the mill championship teams."

Not to mention

- Kris Commons grew up as a Forest fan, played for Forest, moved to Derby on a free transfer.
- Billy Davies former Derby manager now the Forest manager.
- Rob Earnshaw the Derby reject trying to prove a point at Forest.

As for this year, really enjoyed the Northwich game. Well done ITV!

I don't know why it's being played tomorrow. There is no way a highlights programme would be put on for just one 1st round game. So if the clubs moved it they've shot themselves in the foot because there'll be no TV coverage of it apart from local news clips.

20-30 years ago, not now. I'm guessing you support one of these teams but stuff like "traitor" Commons or Earnshaw wouldn't really interest the casual fans.

In an FA Cup third round, people want to see matches they don't usually see. No offence, but two championship teams facing off is far from the excitement of a potential upset in Kettering v Fulham.

Its a game that should be definitely televised in the championship, and probably should be in the FA Cup. BUT when its chosen over Kettering v Fulham, somethings wrong there.

The police moved Millwall v Wimbledon.

Regarding ITVs matches their two choices in the first round were fair enough. Yes you could say they were asking Paulton to do the impossible v Norwich but imagine if they had have done and ITV not picked it. Northwich v Charlton is certainly a good pick because it had a side just coming down from the championship into league 1, playing away at a non league ground. And they lost. I enjoyed the match, and the swearing from the crowd!

But ITVs first replay choice does seem to be a bit of a strange one. Rochdale v Luton.

The FA haven't accounced their choice yet which suggests they might be waiting for the match tomorrow night to be concluded.

Looking ahead to the 2nd round I would have thought Kettering v Leeds is certain of a TV game.

Theres also Northwich v Lincoln and Wrexham v Swindon.

In your opinion it may be wrong but Setanta were a subscription broadcaster. How many people would subscribe to watch Kettering v Fulham? Kettering fans would be at the ground and Fulham fans would expect to win. Yes there is neutral interest but its high-risk, the game could be over in 20 minutes.

Then you've got Derby v Forest, a huge local rivalry between two teams with large fanbases that would not all be guaranteed tickets. Also two teams that would not ordinarily feature on Setanta. And it appeals to neutral viewers and is allowed on a Friday night. Only one winner.

Staines v Millwall (if they were to get through) would be a decent choice too

It would also allow broadcasters to make da Ali G puns, innit?

It was moved to avoid a clash with the Blackheath fireworks.

Any game could be over in 20 minutes! The fact that Setanta wanted to show a 6th match after they confirmed the choices shows that they knew they had mucked it up.
