UKRD and The Local Radio Company have both resigned membership of the RadioCentre, commercial radio’s trade body, to oppose the proposed digital switchover review date of 2013 and subsequent switchover date of 2015. The move comes less than three weeks after UTV were vocal about their decision to also opt out of the trade body. UKRD and TLRC are now planning to work together with UTV Radio to make a case against the switchover date. [b]More and Scott Taunton, head of TalkSport's parent UTV Radio GB, has told the Guardian newspaper that he considers the government’s target for planned digital switchover and the removal of the AM and FM frequencies from the radio spectrum by 2015 as “farcical”. This comes after UTV quit membership of the RadioCentre trade body earlier this month with Taunton claiming they left over a beef with Global Radio and the way they did business. "For us it came down to Global,” said Taunton, “As the largest funder of the RadioCentre, [they were] making sure that the policies of the RadioCentre were in the interests of Global Radio," says Taunton. [b]More 2. Absolute Radio is to launch an 80s station catering for "reluctant adults" who want to reconnect with the tunes of their youth. The new station, Absolute 80s, will be broadcast from early December on the internet and the London DAB – digital audio broadcasting – slot currently occupied by Absolute Xtreme. [b]More (The Unknown One) 3. For those of you who remember Radio Seagull, it has started regular daily transmissions this week in London via Spectrum Radio. The broadcasts, presented in English, are for night owls - at 0200-0400 UTC. [b]More 4. Both UCB UK and Panjab Radio launch on D1 on Tuesday 1st December 2009 and discussion of both can be continued here and here (SKYtvFREAK) 5. Litt Corporation's newly acquired radio station Buzz Asia has gone on-air. More 6. The BBC and representatives from the commercial radio sector are planning to create a single website with Listen Live links for every radio station in Britain. Whilst such websites already exist, it's the first time the two broadcasting rivals have worked together to create a joint website. The site is hoping to be testing before Christmas, with a launch in early 2010, but will need full approval from the BBC Trust. They recently rejected a plan to include commercial services within the iPlayer, saying that such a project was too complicated and would not deliver value to licence fee payers. More 7. A petition to number 10 Downing Street is currently on going to stop the forced digitalisation of analogue radio, it is E-mail based. In an E-mail sent to me by Ex Abbey Road sound engineer Claude Harper, reads (in part)….. “Well worth sending this off as DAB sounds crap, over compressed on top of initial compression, losing all dynamic range totally, and anyway just bought a new radio/cd for the camper. Cheers, Claude” The Link is Here 8. A new consumer-facing digital radio organisation has launched, and will be known as Digital Radio UK. It has the demanding task of getting the UK ready for digital radio upgrade. The body will build on the work of the Digital Radio Development Bureau and will incorporate the recently announced Digital Radio Delivery Group to co-ordinate and manage the expansion of the digital radio platform throughout the UK. The company has advertised for a CEO and expects to make the appointment before the end of the year. More 9. Ofcom has produced a fact sheet on its work in tackling illegal broadcasting 10. Planned timetable for the re-advertisement of local analogue commercial radio licences as per OFCOM * * * * * *

Newsie Bits 1. The BBC and Arqiva have announced that the agreement to upgrade the relevant parts of the UK digital terrestrial television (DTT) transmission network to DVB-T2 has been confirmed. The new DVB-T2 technology will deliver an increase in capacity of 67% to the BBC's Multiplex B, efficiently creating the space needed for UK public service broadcasters' HD transmissions. The BBC and Arqiva will be the first organisations in the world to deploy the DVB-T2 technology into full operational service across an entire transmission network. The upgrade programme, which runs alongside the BBC's main digital television transmission agreement, will start by launching Freeview HD services in the North West of England from December this year. More 2. It seems a lot longer ago, but in 2006 Sky purchased a 17.9 per cent stake in rival broadcaster ITV for a cool £940 million or £1.35 a share. This shareholding effectively blocked cable rival NTL from taking over ITV. Since then the case has been referred to the Competition Commission and after appeals, the problem remains the same for Sky. More 3. In the third phase of Ofcom’s long running pay-TV enquiry, Sky has accused the regulator of holding an “extreme agenda” in plans that would allow it to set the wholesale prices for Sky’s premium movies and sports channels. In a 277 page response that brings together previously released arguments with new materials, Sky says its channels would be treated as regulated assets in order to further Ofcom’s policy objectives of promoting growth on DTT and IPTV platforms. Frequent mentions in the response to competition law suggest that if Ofcom pushes through its proposals before next spring’s General Election, then Sky will clearly be seeking judicial intervention. More 4. Sky has published its full response to the latest consultation document in Ofcom’s Pay TV market investigation. More 5. Japan’s public broadcaster has started transmitting its NHK World channel in high definition in some markets. Carried on Intelsat’s IS8 craft at 166 deg East, and IS10 at 68.5 deg East. NHK World supplies news and current affairs programming from Japan. The transmissions are reportedly in 1080i/60 Hz, in MPEG4 compression. (remlap) 6. In advance of the roll-out of Freeview HD starting in December 2009, the BBC has announced it will clear Multiplex B of all current standard definition streams, resulting in the closure of one BBC Red Button interactive video stream and the BBC News Multiscreen stream. While Multiplex B will be fully reserved for HD services in the parts of the UK that have been through digital switchover, the BBC will, through a competitive tender, offer to the market the two vacant streams available in other parts of the UK in the interim period to 2012. More 7. The BBC and Freesat are preparing for a 'beta test' phase of the much-anticipated iPlayer application using Freesat gear's built-in broadband connection. Writing on the BBC Internet Blog, Rahul Chakkara said: "I expect to start a Beta deployment by the end of November using capable Freesat devices." This will be the first deployment of the iPlayer on a free-to-air set-top box, following its availability on Virgin Media and games consoles. More 8. Media researchers are predicting the first first Ultra High Definition TV broadcasts could go live about 8 years from now. Ultra High Definition is being pioneered by Japanese public broadcaster NHK, and would provide up to 16 times the resolution of 1080p high definition. Analysts at In-Stat claim UHD with trials and showcase events over the next five to 10 years, but they expect to see the first continuous public broadcasts around 2017. That's the time that about five per cent of viewers worldwide will have U-HD-capable TVs, although it's likely to be 2021 before Europe hits five per cent on its own. More 9. Sky has announced that all Sky+ HD customers with set top boxes manufactured by Samsung will get the new electronic programme guide in the "next two weeks". At the start of last month, Sky started contacting the 30,000 Sky+ HD customers with Samsung boxes about the process for them obtaining the new EPG. More 10. Sky has launched a new appeal against a Competition Commission ruling that it must reduce its 17.9% stake in ITV. The satellite operator lodged a fresh appeal in a London court against the commission's review, which it believes lacked sufficient rigor to justify the ruling, reports Reuters. Back in 2006, Sky became the largest shareholder in ITV after purchasing 696 million shares for £940m. At the time, there were suggestions that the purchase was a blocking move to prevent ITV joining up with Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group, containing cable operator NTL, now Virgin Media. More 11. Sky has extended its relationship with OpenTV, licensing new patents and intellectual property rights, to support the ongoing development of its digital TV platform. The two companies will now work on a proof of concept that could lead to the deployment of the recently announced Core3 next generation middleware on the Sky+ HD receivers. The top-to-bottom architecture simplifies the deployment of interactive services and application widgets. More 12. The BBC Trust is to consider whether Gaelic TV channel BBC Alba should get a Freeview slot, as part of a review of the service launched today. The consultation will weigh up whether it is worth dropping the BBC’s radio stations from the DTT in Scotland during Alba’s hours, and allowing the Gaelic channels to air there instead. It will also examine the performance of the service, whether it represents value for money, and how well it appeals to viewers who do not speak Gaelic. More 13. Arqiva has launched a tender process for interested parties wishing to launch new propositions on "additional" channels available on the Freeview platform. According to the transmission firm, the two new channel slots will be able to broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Arqiva is the licence holder for multiplexes C and D, which principally make up the Freeview platform. More 14. United for Local Television (ULTV) has revealed that 80 MPs have signed up to a Commons motion calling for a new local TV network to be created on Freeview. Back in June, ULTV asked the government to reserve spectrum from the digital switchover for the establishment of a dedicated local TV channel under the Channel 6 brand. The renewed campaign was partially in response to the lack of coverage for local TV provision in the Digital Britain report, which left existing local broadcasters in a state of flux. More 15. Sky seemingly is going to rebrand there is a thread open for discussion here 16. For those of you who have questions about why they’ll lose access to FIVE and ITV1 if they don’t insert the new white Sky viewing card into their box’ Click Here 17. Under the heading, WOW! CEATEC technology show in Chiba, Japan saw Mitsubishi unveil its latest 155” OLED ‘Diamond Vision’ display screen. It stunned the crowd, with a claimed brightness three-times that of any current LCD. Claimed life for these OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) screens is only some 20,000 hours. More 18. Scripps Networks Interactive is launching the Food Network on Sky on 9th November in a joint venture with Chello Zone. “We are going to give Living and others a run for their money,” said Greg Moyer, president of the company’s international development subsidiary, Scripps Networks International. The Food Network will be part of the basic tier. “This is the first of what we hope will be many ventures to expand the global footprint of Scripps Networks Interactive.” More 19. Sky and Discovery Europe have signed an ad sales deal, bringing to an end to a year-long legal battle that threatened to severely undermine Sky's TV ad negotiations for 2010. The four-year deal, which starts in January, will see Sky become the sole airtime sales agent across Discovery's 13 UK channels, including Animal Planet, DMAX and Discovery Travel and Living. Industry sources estimate that the deal to be worth more than £200m in total (£50m a year). How the revenue will be split between the companies is undisclosed. More 20. ITV has postponed the launch of ITV1+1 "until further notice", it was to have launched on the 1st October. More 21. Sky has said its proposals to launch a 3D television service in 2010 do not circumvent the various industry initiatives to develop a common standard for the format. In a Broadband TV News/Videonet interview Brian Lenz, director, product design & TV product development, Sky, said it was not the issue that many in the industry were making out because all the manufacturers with which the sat-caster has held discussions were proposing multiple input formats. More 22. Subscribers to Sky TV will soon able to protect their identities with a new service being offered by the satellite TV provider. Identity theft and fraud cannot only be a nuisance but it can cost the victim too, which is one of the reasons for introducing a series of online data protection tools that will provide customers with a service that should prevent fraud from happening. More 23. Digital TV Group announced that the test and conformance regime for Freeview HD and Freeview+ HD receivers have commenced. Back in March, the DTG published D-Book 6 to outline the interoperability specifications for Freeview HD equipment in preparation for the first broadcasts at the Winter Hill transmitter on the 2nd December. More 24. Channel 4 is to hold a week of programming which will 'celebrate the golden era of 3D footage', according to the broadcaster. Programmes will be shown in ColorCode 3D, which viewers will need ColorCodeViewer™ 3D glasses to watch. Channel 4 Marketing have partnered with Sainsburys to make these glasses available in stores, free of charge, before the week of programming commences. More 25. Scotland, North-East, and mid-Yorkshire join London for early Freeview HD Glasgow, Edinburgh, Tyneside, Sunderland, Leeds and Bradford will join London and North-West England for the launch of Freeview HD. Ofcom told What Satellite & Digital TV that at least three UK transmitters are being discussed for Freeview HD alongside Crystal Palace and Winter Hill. These are Black Hill for Glasgow and Edinburgh, Pontop Pike for Tyneside and Sunderland, and Emley Moor for Leeds, Bradford, and mid Yorkshire. More 26. Sky is still in the process of swapping its smart cards, a procedure which is likely to take several months. On air promotions are being screened advising viewers of the change. More |

1. In an announcement published less than 24 hours before the switchover reaches the Moel-Y-Parc transmitter group, the move of the digital multiplexes from Moel-Y-Parc to their new frequencies will not be complete until 2nd December, not the previously announced 25th November 2009. You know summat?
Theres only 1 problem with the 28E frequencies being chokka blokka - you dont get the interesting tests popping up like we used to. Ive just found my video tape out from the October/November 2002 Icelandic tests on 10818V

They were initially on 2D in October 2002:
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s...ad.php?t=38981 (2D covers Iceland nicely with only 80cm dishes required) ![]() They then returned on 2D & Astra 1H for the Icelandic elections in May 2003: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s...ad.php?t=59967 No chance of Iceland appearing on 28E when 2C returns - RUV has since launched onto 1W |

Channel 4 is using the classic 1980's "spinning blocks" logo as part of the trailer for their 3D season
(Complete with the David Dundas 4 note musical sting )If you are too young to remember the iconic logo have a look here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4omtlg-rWg |
