Scrubs Season 9 (US Pace) [Spoilers MUST be in tags]

Hi all,

This isn't really the sort of show that necessitates spoilers anyway, but I figured I'd put the condition there so nobody is inadvertently upset. Spoilers in this thread are defined as anything that is yet to air on US TV, including promos.

Anyway, the series premiere has been set for 1st December, which is sooner than I had been expecting. The thing is, the blurb for the new series makes it sound like Zack Braff hasn't left at all???

ABC ANNOUNCES THE SEASON PREMIERES OF "SCRUBS" AND "BETTER OFF TED"
Back-to-Back Episodes of "Scrubs" Air Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 9:00 and 9:30 p.m., ET; "Better Off Ted" Premieres Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 9:30 p.m.
The hit half-hour comedy series "Scrubs" will return to ABC this December for its ninth season. This irreverent and offbeat comedy will debut TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1, with back-to-back episodes from 9:00-9:30 and 9:30-10:00 p.m., ET. On TUESDAY, DECEMBER 8, the critically acclaimed comedy "Better Off Ted" will begin its sophomore season at 9:30 p.m., ET, following an original episode of "Scrubs."

"Scrubs" focuses on the unique point of view of Dr. John "J.D." Dorian (Zach Braff). Having left the hospital temporarily for a job at another hospital, he returns to Sacred Heart to teach med school. Together with Drs. Turk (Donald Faison), Cox (John C. McGinley), Kelso (Ken Jenkins) and intern Denise (Eliza Coupe), he is now professor to a class of brand new medical students Lucy (Kerry Bishe), Drew (Michael Mosley) and Cole (Dave Franco) while continuing his romance with the beautiful but socially awkward Dr. Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke).

At 9:00 p.m., in an episode entitled, "Our First Day of School," J.D., Turk, Drs. Cox and Kelso and Intern Denise return to Sacred Heart to teach med school while new med students Lucy, Drew, Cole and Maya are put through the ringer on their first day of school. At 9:30 p.m., in "Our Drunk Friend," Lucy learns a hard lesson about what it takes to be a doctor. Meanwhile J.D. and Turk spot a potential love connection between Denise and the new med student Drew, as they play matchmakers with a little bit of help from Dr. Kelso.

"Scrubs" stars Zach Braff as J.D., Sarah Chalke as Elliot Reid, Donald Faison as Chris Turk, John C. McGinley as Dr. Perry Cox, Ken Jenkins as Dr. Bob Kelso and Eliza Coupe as Denise. Joining the cast are Kerry Bishe as Lucy, Michael Mosley as Drew and Dave Franco as Cole. "Scrubs" is produced by ABC Studios. Bill Lawrence ("Spin City") is the executive producer and creator.

"Better Off Ted" is a satirical office comedy about successful good guy, Ted Crisp, who runs research and development at Veridian Dynamics, a company with a morally questionable approach to its employees. Whether it's standing by a memo with a typo that encourages employees to now (as opposed to not) use offensive language with each other, to championing interoffice dating based on DNA matching to save money on health care, Veridian is a company that puts its bottom line first and employees last. Ted's a single dad to a seven year old girl, and he loves his job, but he's starting to take a closer look at the company's extremely dubious practices.

"Better Off Ted" stars Jay Harrington as Ted, Portia de Rossi as Veronica, Andrea Anders as Linda, Jonathan Slavin as Phil, Malcolm Barrett as Lem and Isabella Acres as Rose. The series is produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television. Victor Fresco ("My Name Is Earl," "Andy Richter Controls the Universe") is executive producer and creator of the series.

ABC Media Relations: "Scrubs," Amber Gereghty (818) 460-6781/Makena Coscarelli (818) 460-5492
"Better Off Ted," Ellen Gonzalez (818) 460-7185

I presume he's still only back for a few episodes of the season though? Or have things changed and I just never picked up on it?

I'm still not overly enamoured with the idea of a new season anyway, but I'll give it a chance.

He's back but for only six episodes, but everyone else on the cast seems to suggest he may do more later.

spoiler:
J.D. is back to teach at the university which is across the way from the new Sacred Heart, but of course he's going to interact with his wife and best friends at Sacred Heart

I'd personally hope he stays behind the camera because I enjoy him more today directing and producing than acting.

That including directing for Scrubs.

It's been worst kept secret that December 1st was going to be tried this year, and just let the 13 episodes run through it seems.

Think of it like a spin-off that's how I am going to do it.

I love the way the press release calls Scrubs "the hit half-hour comedy series "Scrubs."

Scrubs has never been a hit. It's a cult favourite. In its second series it ranked 14th, due to an advantageous time slot, but apart from that it's never ranked higher than 38th, and the most recent series ranked 123rd

Same here. I'm giving it a go based on what Bill Lawrence said about it really.

It's not Scrubs as we know it - it's more of a spinoff crossed with a reboot, but under the same name.

Hasn't Bill Lawrence basically said that the only reason he is doing Season 9 is because getting jobs in the industry is hard these days, and he didn't want his production team to be out of work?

That's pretty much it ..

Many long-time "Scrubs" fans have been skeptical about the renewal, feeling the show ended so well that additional seasons might taint its legacy. Lawrence is keeping many of the people he worked with for the last eight years employed in a terrible economy, and isn't worried about legacy.

"I feel so good about what the show was that, if the worst-case scenario is that the show comes on for one year, doesn't find any audience and people feel that creatively it's not strong, as long as I know we tried, I can live with that."

But he also has a warning for his audience:

"It very well may suck. But don't say it sucks until you see it. And my pledge is that if it sucks, it's not going to suck in a fizzly way. It's going to suck in a giant, 'Oh my god' kind of way, because we're really swinging for the fences and trying to do some big stuff."

This is actually quite a good interview with Lawrence about "Scrubs 2.0"

He's actually put two production teams into work he's built two new teams with Scrubs and Cougar Town.

He did say he would promote previous Scrubs crew who they think deserves a higher position on Cougar Town and promote lower crew on Scrubs to fill the empty one and hire new for Scrubs.

There seems to be a BIG change in the writers room to, so there's fresh new stories and comedy coming out of it hopefully..

Great to see Denise back. She was the best new addition last season by far. Hopefully she'll get a more prominent role this series!

I'm not really a big fan of Denise, though i don't dislike her.
Prefered Ed and Sunny Day.
