Why has STV go there own crew for these champions league matches? Rob McLean presenting with terry butcher and then theres the commentry team of ian crocker and craig burley! no wonder stv havent got much money? why pay these guys when they can take the uk wide itv coverage of the champions league?

They think they can do it themselves cheaper.

STV want to have SOME sort of presense on it, otherwise it would look like a complete embarresment .....

as the ONLY SODDING FEDERATION to NOT have their team represented by their OWN tv station!!!!

but thanks to ITV being jealous of stv even DARING to opt out of programming, they have done this to us!

It's not an STV crew, it's contracted out. Crocker does SPL games for Sky and McLean does Saturday Score for BBC.

It might be to have more of a Scottish influence in the coverage (this argument won't hold for the live game, but STV do a highlights show where I presume Rangers have been the featured game when playing on Wednesday)

It could also because of promotion issues, eg ITV advertised FA Cup coverage for this weekend which won't be on STV

As arius said, STV probably think they can produce a show cheaper than paying for the network coverage

They probably signed "The A Team" up to commentate on the Scottish Champions - only to find out that they were not actually going to be showing any of their games ... so maybe they were under contract??

But you would think if they are taking pictures from ITV1 why not take the commentary and presentation team as well??

Leaving aside the issue of who provides the commentary and analysis, I can't understand why STV is bothering to show the Champions League at all...

Most of the Scottish football audience would've been tuned into Sky for the Rangers match (or watching in the pub) and ITV's coverage of the Liverpool match was already available fta via satellite and cable to viewers in Scotland.

STV would probably have attracted a bigger audience (and saved themselves a small fortune) by showing an old film instead

And yet, for not buying the rights to a competition featuring ZERO Scottish clubs and which is similarly available on Satelite and Cable, they get lambasted by people on here!

STV can't win.
For the record, I'm glad that there is at least some Scottish-centric coverage of the Champions League. Although Scotland must be the ONLY UEFA member present in the Group Stages to not get its club shown on free TV at all.

I think the blame for this situation lies entirely with UEFA rather than ITV. They appear to have insisted that rights for Scottish and English clubs were bundled together, leaving Scottish viewers entirely at the mercy of the London based UK networks.

Well they do that because most channels here are UK wide channels rather than channels broadcasting solely to one country. STV has only recently decided to break from that but whether it suits them or not they are still part of a UK ITV network. So from UEFA's point of view for the past 17 years of the Champions League they have had no Scottish channels to sell to. Once they were all regional networks.

Maybe the situation should be changed now with scottish only rights being sold or them forcing ITV to allow STV to opt out but UEFA couldn't have forseen when the rights were sold that STV and ITV would have a dummy spitting contest.

STV's coverage is much better. They use the same faces from the old Setanta Sports days.

I tend to watch on ITV HD for better picture though.

It's still bizzare not to show Rangers though. Now we see the STV crew doing English teams' games. Does this even apply to the final?

ITV won't touch it as it won't appeal to everybody. STV just buy pictures from ITV.

For the record, I don't have Sky Sports as I can't justify the cost (nor am I a pub frequenter), and had no interest in the Liverpool game so my only option was to hang til half ten when STV were showing the Rangers game (I agree tho, STV's presentation is awful as are Butchers puns:-p).

I don't know if it is penny-pinching by STV, ITV in a huff, or the terrestial Champions League rights, but STV used to opt out of the live game featuring English teams and show a Scottish team if there was one playing on the same night.

A simalar thing happed many years ago in 1996 in the days when only 1 English team (Man Utd on this occasion) played in the CL and Rangers who were the Scottish represtives had already been elimated early. So STV showed Man Utd's coverage when Rangers were still playing their last 2 games in their group and I remember there was a sea of angry Rangers fans outside STV's studios when they stopped showing Rangers as they were already elminated.

Man Utd lost in the semi-finals that season bTW

wait a minute! im a football fan in general! and, am i the only one north of the border that might not be too bothered to watch rangers in the champions league? im quite happy with watching whoever itv go for whether it be english based or scottish based! i grew up watching english teams in europe, infact the majority of scottish kids had a english team as there 2nd team as a kid! so getting to see the liverpool's and man u's in europe was just the norm.

looking back to even the champs league qualifier between rangers and leeds 92/93 season, i took in ulster tv (itv nationwide coverage) at the time as opposed to stv's coverage which was amateurish then aswell as opposed to the great brian moore and ron atkinson on itv.

i would say the majority of fans north of the border were watching liverpool's meaningful match v lyon as opposed to gers v who is it again? ive forgot?

Well I suppose that's your prerogative and no doubt there will be others here who'll agree with you. The problem is that if everyone in Scotland shared that point of view it wouldn't be long before all the tv money drained away and there wasn't any Scottish football left to watch.

There's nothing that our London based tv networks would like more than ditching Scottish football coverage altogether in order to extend the market for English teams north of the border; they'd get bigger audiences for matches which they already cover and could pocket the money currently spent buying rights to football in Scotland. The warning signs are already flashing and in the end the losers will be the Scottish clubs and those who support them.
