Why do women like soaps?

It seems almost hardwired - but why?

That's quite a sweeping generalisation droogie, I'm sure there's plenty of exceptions to the 'rule', just as there is with men and football.

Conversely I'm a man and I like soaps, but I don't like football, and I'm straight before you ask.

I think they are pretty-well aimed at women, with their strong women/moronic men storylines.

It's not "hard-wired" at all.
I'm a woman and I never watch soaps. I don't own a TV and only use iplayer for certain comedy programmes and Dragons' Den.

I'm a woman and I don't watch soaps or X factor, or Strictly come ice skating or Britain lacks talent or any of that kind of stuff.

how much is there to like about a soap?

that's easy - drama

they get off on that stuff, they love it in their own lives too. that's why bad boys are very popular, they bring drama, uncertainty and excitement to relationships, and women just love it

DISCLAIMER: many women, not all

I know many women who detest soaps, and men who watch them religiously.

to be fair, the anti-septic ones are aimed at paranoid people

When you are chained to the kitchen sink it is lovely to have a sense of drama, adventure, life and excitement

My mum watches Coronation Street and sometimes I watch it too, but a lot of the time I'm not that bothered about it because soaps aren't my thing.

Science-fiction and fantasy however - I absolutely love it, just about all my fave TV shows are in those two genres!

Goodness you're a touchy lot

I am not sterotyping and if it offends I will withdraw the 'hard wired' word.

But is anyone seriously contending that just as many men enjoy soaps as women? We are talking Corrie, Emmerdale and that main BBC one (seriously I'm not being funny - but it's name has gone completely out of my head ....Eastenders!)

Is it not the case that far more women than men like these soaps? There's nothing judgemental in the question - there's no sub agenda - I'm just trying to understand why?

You would, after all, expect both sexes to be equally interested. There's nothing overtly obvious about why soaps appeal to women more than men - but they do.

So why?

At least when we watch soaps we don't have to :

Watch it all again six times in slow motion action replay

Buy the official t shirt for £50 over and over again every year every time they change two stripes on the badge.

Listen to interminable post mortem chatter about the exact way Dev stood as he passed the packet of tea bags to Blanche and she passed back the £1.27p nd whether or not the director should have noticed that he was standing in between her and the till.

Spend two hours round the water cooler in the morning discussing whether Rita deserves to be paid £x and whether she should be moved to EE for £y

Spent forty minutes rhapsodising about Roy's delivery of one particular line when that is in fact ......... er............ his job.

I absolutely hate soaps XD

Give me Merlin, Spooks, Heroes, Flash Forward, anything decent, but don't even try to get me to watch soaps XD
