Favourite Classic sci-fi/Creature feature movies.

Just thought I'd start this thread, so we can all throw a title in randomly to remind ourselves of some of the classics, and hopefully learn a few titles we were unaware of. So I'll start with just two for now.

Colossus: The Forbin Project. Never heard of this until a few months ago, it's a brilliantly made film, definately one of those "They don't make 'em like this anymore" films.

World Without End. I bang on about this in a blog post, spoilers though!! http://thesmallworldofalt.com/?p=90

Nice to see some recognition for the Forbin Project, it's a forgotten classic.

Two of my faves are The Andromeda Strain (the original movie - not the recent made for TV remake) and Forbidden Planet starring a young Leslie Neilsen. Awesome movie, great effects and very influential.

Kronos (1957): a forgotten classic which is never on tv.

Does Weird Science count? I love it and am pleased to see it's on TV rather a lot these days!

I was thinking just the other day how surprising it was that 'The Creature From The Black Lagoon' hasn't been remade / rebooted / reimagined / whatever. Of course I nip over to IMDb and and there it is in pre-production slated for release in 2011.

Anyway the original is a classic 50s monster movie.

It is a great film isn't it?

Agreed on Andromeda strain and FP, what would the world be without FP and Robbie the Robot?

Watched this a few months ago, it is brilliant. Another classic with Jeff Morrow, a great genre actor. And seriously stylish title sequence too.

All three are great films, Clint Eastwood gets his first screen role in the second film, and both Jeff Morrow and Rex Reason (see This Island Earth) in the third installment, and Jeff is fantastic in this movie too, a real tortured, jealous character, quite a heavy sub plot for a fairly poignant creature feature.

I didn't know they're gonna remake it either, mmmmmmm not sure I like the sound of that, we'll see.

The Man from Planet X (1951) is a great little movie. What struck me are the great studio sets, apparently left over from the Joan of Arc production.

I will say though, I think my all time fave is The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) followed very closely by Forbidden Planet.

So many elements to TDTESS that just blow me away, the Bluray is a treat.

Clint also appears in another 50's monster movie: Tarantula. The story is about a giant spider (surprise surprise) which goes on the rampage until it's stopped by the airforce.

And flying the jet that stops it is the young Clint.

I love 1950's science fiction movies. Among my faves are:

The Day The Earth Stood Still, Forbidden Planet, War of The Worlds, The Thing, Invasion of the Bodysnatchers, Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, Earth Vs The Flying Saucers... great stuff

Agreed on all, I do have 'em all on DVD, and bluray for the Harryhausens, they look fantastic.

Yeah, Clint in Tarantula, you'd only tell from the eyes though, as he has an oxygen mask on.

I could watch these films on a loop, it is my favourite genre (obviously), but it's just the honest story telling, lean production and the naivety of 'em, and stereo-typical characters.... no need for introductions, we know who's who and who'll live and who will die!

I really must see Godzilla again soon. It's been years since I last saw it, in the early 90's. I was looking forward to the bluray, but apparently the image is terrible!! Shame. Can't remember if I've seen Mothra though, saw a load of 'em when they released a load of double VHS sets in the early 90's, but I think these may have been slightly later ones, Son of Godzilla etc.

I do listen to the Godzilla score fairly often though, it's really good.

Forbin Project, Andromeda Strain, Logans Run, Silent Running are faves.
Not sure if Soylent Green is classed as Sci-fi, if so another fave.

Worse one has to be Plan 9 from outer space

Haven't seen Silent Running for years!! But, bought it on DVD for a quid at a local charity shop last week, on the pile to watch, looking forward to it, Bruce Dern is great, and after seeing 'Moon' which has similarities, it's another reason to see this again soon.

Despit the apparent kitsch value of Plan 9, I cannot watch it, it is just plain bad!!

Not all really "creature features" but overlooked or hard to find gems:

The Unearthly Stranger

The Damned

Invasion

Matango (aka Attack of the Mushroom People)

Target Earth

The World, the Flesh & the Devil

Frankenstein Conquers the World (you can feel your grip on sanity loosening as you watch)

Die, Monster Die!

Nothing but the Night

Neither the Sea nor the Sand

Would You Kill a Child?

Encounter at Ravensgate

Blood Beach

I remember when I first saw Silent running as a kid, I was just as devasted at the end as I was when ET was in a coma
I've not seen Moon yet, I need to get around to watching it as heard some good reviews.

Whoa, crazy list, don't think I've seen any of those, heard of a couple of 'em, sounds like a few dodgy corkers in there.

Is that the one where a couple is on an Island, maybe Greek or Spanish with the murderous kids?

Another one I can think of is The Brood with Oliver Reed, although might class more as Horror.

Yeah, horror I reckon, probably 25 years ago when I saw that, bloody 'orrible film if I remember right.

Just looked on IMBD about this, interesting film actually, didn't know any of it then though!

I saw it a couple of years ago, I just took a look on IMDB and the comments section, the film was meant to describe Cronenburgs vison of his own divorce ooer that must've been a messy one.

The Time Machine

The Damned

Forbidden Planet - best sci-fi film ever in my humble opinion
