40 years of Sesame Street (merged)

OK, so we haven't seen it in the UK for some time now but as a child, I loved it. I particularly enjoyed Kermit the Frog's newsflashes. And moonlighting too? Fancy that!

Lots of memorable characters such as Cookie Monster, Big Bird, Bert, Ernie and (my favourite) Oscar, and who could forget the psychedelic pinball countdown or #'it takes a lot of little nuts to make a jar of peanut butter'#? I'll be annoying plenty of people with that song today!

Woah, I can't let this thread leave the front page without anyone else posting.

My kids (and I ) thoroughly enjoyed Sesame Street. I think Oscar and the Count are probably my favourites after Kermit. Some of the "Kermit the Frog reporting for Sesame Street News" sketches still crack me up.

The sketch my family remember best, though (and still quote at each other) is the Rhyme Gameshow with Cookie Monster as the contestant. "Train rhyme with rain! Me win Cookie!"

Thanks for your replies, everyone. I was beginning to think nobody particularly cared about Sesame Street!

Even seeing a picture of the long serving presenter Bob McGrath has me feeling nostalgic. It would be nice to see a few old episodes again!

Sesame Street was always one of those programmes I had my kids watch when they were younger. But.... Only because I used to love it so much.

"C'mon kids, time for Sesame Street."

"Ahh Dad can't we watch (insert some rubbish Japanese cartoon here)?"

"No - Sesame Street is much better for you."

My ex missus loved it - we were all quiet for an hour!!!!!!

I loved The Count and was always surprised he never made it to The Muppet Show - I could just imagine him as the Theatre Company Acountant - ensuring that none of the Chickens were missing (Gonzo!!!!).

I recently bought the two old time favourites DVDs with episodes from the early '70s and my two year old loves it particularly cookie frog [sic] and the counting count.

Surely with the utter dross kids have to put up with these days (yes Rory the Racing car, I mean you!) there has to be scope for one of the uk channels to broadcast this amazing show. Who should we badger? maybe Dave as a nostalgia thing...

Nick Jr Classics? It would sit well with the likes of Rainbow and Bagpuss in their schedules.

I loved Sesame Street when I was little. I remember when I was growing up it was on Channel 4. I have no idea why it's not shown over here anymore - I thought it was absolutely brilliant.

Good article here about its demise on British TV: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8340141.stm

It was bright, colourful and engaging. It was the one thing I'd always watch - even when I started nursery my Mum would record it everyday so I could it watch it when I got home.

I absolutely adored Sesame Street as a child and much preferred it over our own stuffy and pretentious Blue Peter.

I loved Sesame Street when I was little and I still love it now! I'm in my 20s...

It's such a shame it's not on over here. The children's TV in the UK is horrid- the presenters either shout or talk to children in a really patronising way. Sesame Street was engaging, funny and education. I wish it was still on our screens now

Tickle Me Elmo was so popular- you would think they would have put Sesame Street back on!

I always liked the bloke in the white overalls, who used to paint numbers everywhere.
