Secret Party
Well, i know this sounds bad but..
I might aswel say my age, its the first time i have on any forum ! . It was my 18th yesterday and i went for a nice meal with family. Now the plan my mother was saying is on the saturday (this saturday!) we will go for a few drinks somewhere. Now i really was against this anyway, i am not that type of person and don't like drinking alco with family. Anyway, i got a few signs and things were going through my head that she has organised something. Trying not to spoil it all but i did much pretty know something was going to happen. I rang a friend, talked as normal and kind of did the 'im not going to say but i know' talk. They asked how i knew etc.. but did not say much and we are keeping it between us. I am just feeling worried, its a great thing for my mum to do but i'm not that type of person. I don't like fuss, it was hard enough when they started singing happy birthday last night at the meal. In my mind i keep going through it 'where is it, is it a rubbish place, who is going' i don't have a big group of friends and more female friends than male really. Im not really asking for advice in a way just wanted to get it out of me

It's your 18th and no doubt you mum does want to make a fuss about it since it's considered a milestone in life.
I would just go with what is put on for you and enjoy the night. I'm not one for fuss too but it is nice every now and then to get some attention, and your 18th should be one of those days. |

OP, I was dreading my 18th, just like you were but in the end my mum 'convinced' me to have a party in the house with all my extended family. I ended up actually enjoying it so maybe you will be the same?

Sometimes in life we just have to go along with the other person. It's shit but the alternative is worse.
Your mum wants to do this and she's doing it for the best of reasons. And that's because she loves you. Grit your teeth and make the best of it. What's the worst that can happen? You have a rubbish night out? Big deal. We've all had rubbish nights out. No, it's much worse that you can't just humour your mum on this one night and make the best of it. Who knows? You might just enjoy it. |

Good grief. I would have been happy to have that happen to me. My 21st involved my mum throwing a hissy fit on the actual birthday day (ending me being in bed by 9pm in floods of tears), three days before the party she insisted we have (that she had invited all her work colleagues to), reneging on all the things she had arranged to do for the party like providing the drinks. I had to ring around all my friends and politely request they bring a bottle.
The whole thing culminated with me nearly crippling a strippogram who was a good foot shorter than me and had to pick me up as part of his act, chipping a bone in my ankle when I fell down some stairs in the pub, eating a chilli made with custard powder to thicken it (because she didn't have the money for cornflour...mmm vanilla-ey!) and being chatted up by a college mate who had decided he would do his party trick of fire breathing - which resulted in some very heavily-laced-with-petrol burps in the aftermath, while my mother got stoned off her face and snogged some bloke she worked with. Halcyon days... Be grateful you have a nice family and enjoy your party!!!

Just make sure you look adequately surprised! Go with the flow, and I'm sure you'll enjoy at least some of it.

Try to enjoy it.
You'll get hugs, kisses and gifts, you'll have a wee dance and see people you haven't seen for ages. I don't see what the problem is actually! Sounds great! |

Thanks for the kind words everyone. As i said my main problem was attention, im not one that likes to be at the middle of it all, im the one that likes to sit in the corner and chat with people.
Anyway, we set off and my mum had to 'drop this birthday card off, but lets go in for a drink while we are here' hmm. Thank fully a relative had parked their car right outside the door of the place so i said 'what are they doing here?' so that kind of made my shocked look easier. I went up, it was mainly family and a couple of friends she had got in touch with. It was a really good night, family i had not seen in months. It was great to talk and see everyone even though it was a little cheesy i thought it was good. Did not get drunk really, 2 & 1/2 pints is all i had, could not face being off my head in front of all that family ![]() Adam

Glad you enjoyed it, sounds like a fun night. Now you parents will think you are all sensible too by not getting drunk they will probably cut you more slack - good move
