I Won University Challenge...

... is on BBC2 at 9.45 tonight:

"How has life played out for those endowed with the nation's biggest brains, the previous winners of quiz show University Challenge? After university, is it easy to put those brains to good use? For some there's a pleasure in simply being brainy. For others, it is as much a curse as a blessing. From the champion who was drunk when his team won to the brilliant polymath who now works as a postman, the film unravels the lives of Britain's brainiest."

Sounds interesting!

Is this where I'm supposed to say: "The university of life, school of hard knocks" etc, etc?

About the same time as they decided to become socially inept lunatics.

I think intelligent people tend to be quite chaotic and extreme. For example either too clean or not clean enough.

Hence the terrible teeth...perhaps. *tries to defend terrible teeth*

The alcoholic is probably a better example of intelligence and chaos. Two bottles of vodka a day, talking about functioning alcoholic. I just want to sleep after three G+Ts!

I agree. The woman (can't remember her name) is quite a sad case when you hear how her life has played out.

I think he enjoyed it more than her violin playing. Certainly I did.

That's the first time I've seen contestants buzz and raise their hand to answer a question.

Crazy.

I found this programme very touching. We can be very shallow in our judgements of people, and it is a curse of our society that being clever is almost despised.

Oh good there's a thread on this, was just about to start one as for some reason I couldn't see one.

I was just channel flicking when I happened across this programme and became hooked quickly.

I too was touched by it and the subjects.
I'm very much a layman on this topic but would others agree that Luke (?) - the chap who visited his mum and had copious dairylea sandwiches - was afflicted with some kind of autism? I only ask because there's someone I'm in charge of at work who exhibits similar signs.
I loved the clip of him answering the question posed by Paxman on UC, resulted in Jeremy saying 'blimey', not every day you can get that out of him.

By no means am I even near their mental abilities, but for a period I too was in a state when I needed a way to slow my brain down a touch. It used to think too much and almost be a self destructive organ. I used to dull it down with a mixture of alcohol and cannabis so can understand (to a degree) the anguish they felt. Thor taking heroin, just shook me to the core though. To be as desperate to nullify your brain, as to take heroin (etc) just shows how much of a double edged sword a very able mind can be.

I'm hoping it's on iplayer as I will want to be seeing it again.

And I agree with klytemnestra - knowledge and indeed 'being clever' is almost a point of ridicule sometimes. Knowledge of 'SuBo' and 'JEdward' however is considered a must-have.

Lovely programme. I remember Pitcher, he was something else, very much Trimble-esk.

That Birkbeck team was good all round. Up there with the best.

To slow down their brains you'd think they could just watch a Hollyoaks omnibus.

Ha!, like others have said, I found them quite endearing, I liked Luke's take on life, and that's how I feel about life, if I'm honest. I didn't like how the elderly man Googled himself, it seemed set up to show he wasn't there any more.

DAMN I missed this AND I can't download from iPlayer, doubtfully being repeated. University is my guilty pleasure, I got mocked terribly when I admit watching it.
