Why do GMTV make such a fuss over someone's poppy falling off?

I've noticed over the last few mornings that GMTV treat someone's poppy falling off like someone swearing, they jump into grovelling apologies as if they think they're going to get taken off air. Just now with Peter Andre they were nearly bowing on the ground saying sorry the pins missing.
What is wrong with them?

Because everyone on tv is a potential victim of poppy facism. Can't be too careful.

Quite simply if someone is seen not to have a poppy on, there are those who will be sad enough to phone in and complain.

I'm concerned that idiocy like this may spur people into refusing to wear poppies, in protest.

Favourite ever Express headline:

'NOW CAMILLA HIDES POPPY'

(When the Duchess of Cornwall's poppy was partially obscured by a veil she wore during a trip to Pakistan!)

It's getting a bit over the top now.

Wearing a poppy is still a voluntarily exercise - although some folk would have you believe it is a heinous crime to be seen without one.

Never one to miss out on a bandwagon, the newspapers are 'naming and shaming' those who dare to be seen out in public without a poppy!!

This year people seem to have been wearing them since mid-October.

They have to have Poppies on every dress/ Change of clothes on all the dancers on Strictly come dancing, so even if the dress needs final adjustments to prevent bits popping out make sure they all have poppies cause Nick Ferrari and his tabloid self says so.

Surely that's a danger to the dancers? What if it came off and they slipped?

That's all been done on the SCD board, the poppies will be sewn in so, no danger of them falling off.

It always saddens me when people kick off about poppies and it happens every year, saying it should be down to individual choice and all that nonsense.
Never mind Afghanistan, if hundreds of thousands of our troops hadn't died in the last war and we'd lost it, those people would have had no sodding choice... about anything.
So stick a pound in a tin, stop moaning and wear a poppy for chrissakes, it's the least you can do.

Maybe people can just donate money without having to wear the poppy. I know plenty who do.

I occasionally donate to the poppy fund but I'm totally opposed to any kind of irrational, unquestioning, knee-jerk, blanket requirement to wear one.

Nor is remembrance truly supported by the institutions that cause it to be necessary. There are far too many stories of injured and maimed soldiers receiving no help from govt. or their military units. I remember reading about Falklands Vets who were asked to stay away from church services because their injuries were deemed too unsightly.

The whole thing tends to be driven more by social ritual than any true consideration of the sacrifice armed forces are continually being asked to make.

What about me, I just donate money but feel wrong for taking a poppy?
