sky trying to taking payment after bill already paid
usually sky try taking the money out of the bank earlier than the due date which is usually before my wages go in so i end up getting a bank charge. This time i paid it early with my debit card to avoid this happening but they still tried taking it out even tho i already paid. i'v tried to stop this by ringing sky up but they will not do anyrhing. my bank said sky is responcible and it is up to sky to refund it but i rang sky and they wouldnt. what do i do? sorry about having no paragraphs but i am using opera on my phone and it doesnt have the correct feature.

If you are not running low on money and it has not caused a problem, leave it and it will appear on your account as a credit, meaning you should not have to pay anything next month.
You can change the day of the month that Sky take the money, if paid by Direct Debit, on the Sky website. |

As far as I am aware you can specify a date that you want the money to be taken out of your bank account. At least that is what I have done.

Sounds like you didn't notify Sky or didn't give them enough time to modify the payment. Payments are usually initiated several days in advance so if you're going to pre-empt it manually you need to do so before then. You should also inform Sky that you've done that - it will take time for their systems to respond to a manual payment.
I suggest you talk to Sky about moving your payment to a more convenient date. Then again I'd also suggest that you review whether it is sensible to be subscribing to Sky at the this time. It sounds to me like you are dangerously overstretching your finances at the moment and it's not worth it for Sky. |

Andrue is correct. 14 days before your payment due date the process begins to get the money from your account. So it doesn't matter if you make a payment over the phone, if it's within this 14 day period the money will still be applied for regardless of what your current balance is.
To be fair to yourself, the Sky CS agent should have pointed this out when you asked to make the payment (I'm assuming you did this over the phone here). |

If you were paying within 14 days of your DD due date, you should've cancelled the DD. As previously stated, you can register with My Sky and shift your DD date back a few days so that your wages hit the bank before paying Sky.

The due date is the 4th of every month. I get my wages on the 28th of every month. But sky always try taking the money out before the 28th, this isn't right is it?

As far as I am aware (without reading DD small print) A DD can be taken whenever the recipient wants it regardless of what date it normally goes out. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me. Register your account at My Sky and it will say when they expect to take the cash.

From the financial ombudsmen website:
direct debits are: customers’ authority for beneficiaries to claim payments (variable in amount and frequency) from the customers’ accounts; and customers’ instructions to their bank to allow the taking of those payments. A standing order requires the customer’s bank to send the money. A direct debit requires the beneficiary to claim the money. Typically, a standing order might be used to pay a fixed amount to a savings account or to a local club. A direct debit is more likely to be used to make payments that can vary from time to time – such as mortgage instalments or utility bills. The day-to-day advantage of a direct debit over a standing order is that, as and when the payment amount changes, the beneficiary will claim the new amount automatically – after telling the customer of the change. With a standing order, customers need to give their bank new instructions each time a change is needed. |

I have seen the expression "on or around" used when referring to DD's which would imply that it could go out a day or 2 before the due date, but not a week. I can't comment on the legality of what Sky do.
Have you tried to change the date of your DD? Push your DD back a week or 10 days. OK, so one month you will have to pay for about 5 weeks (as it's paid in advance) but that's gonna be cheaper than a bank charge. |

They never call back.
As post #2 states, if you're not short of cash you'll be in credit so won't need to pay next month. I am not sure what Sky CS could of done when you called to pay except advise you that they couldn't stop the DD going through. It would of needed to be cancelled altogether. When your bill is finalised 14 days before it's due, sky apply for the DD for that amount and it cannot be changed. In the first post, you imply (by saying "usually") that this is not the first time this has happened, so something is amiss somewhere. I hope you get it all sorted. |

Hey chick, I work for Sky and all I can advise you is something rubbish and what you won't like. (which is why I've just handed in my weeks notice!)
Even when you pay your bill by cc or db before the dd should have come out, the dd will still automatically have come out. What you should have been advised when you first called was that you should have cancelled the dd with your bank and then 14 days before the normal date, set it back up. Our systems are pretty crap so we cannot cancel a direct debit or delay it. I'd write to our Customer Relations, which are always amazing, always answer letters etc. It's: Sky Subscriber Services Customer Relations PO BOX 43 Livingston West Lothian EH54 7DD Good luck love, any other questions pm me

Why write to Sky? It's already been explained why this has happened.

I used to get a lot of this with BT and always used to call the bank the morning the DD had left the account and get them to recall it, the money was then put back into my account instantly. I dont know if it makes a difference but that was with LloydsTSB, saves any charges from the banks. Last time I done it was about a year ago.
