Iplayer Question

On my PC and ipod touch, the iplayer buffers for a few seconds before playing. I'm guessing that it makes it less likely to pause on playback. Both of these devices have a hard drive/memory to buffer to.

Does the freesat receiver have any sort of memory to buffer to? If not will it be more likely to pause and jump during playback?

A set top box is much like any other embedded computer system, it has RAM and this RAM can be used for buffering.

The Foxsat range has enough RAM to hold a decent buffer.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to having access to it on my TV as long as it's watchable. It works great on my PC at the moment.

I am confused.

Do you need a Humax box with a hard drive to use iplayer when it comes, or will it work on any?

Please note there is new software coming to help with the new function http://www.joinfreesat.co.uk/index.p...re-in-november

No, you don't need the box with the hard drive to access BBC iPlayer.

the Humax without the hard disc (the one we have), has the ethernet connection on the back, so it must be able to work.

It should work on all boxes as it will be part of the red button interactive standard.

You just need to utilise the ethernet port.

I would guess it would work the same way as sky player on the xbox, buffers too start then if your connection is strong would play all the way through.

Great to see this is on its way.

Using a proxy server (not a free one) I can get BBC iPlayer on my PC but doubt whether I'll find a way for it to work on my Freesat HDR or can anyone suggest a way around this?

I can't see why it won't work with the Foxsat-hdr. As far as the iplayer server's concerned you will be reporting a UK IP address

Will I? I'm in Munich using a local service provider for broadband and I'm assuming that BBC iPlayer content checks (at the BBC end) who/where is requesting it.

Or do you mean that the fact that it is a Freesat product means it'll work automatically?

BBC iPlayer on my UK registered Playstation doesn't work (only radio stations but no TV).

Graham,

I think Miriyo is pointing to a UK Proxy server, within his PC's browser functionality, to get iPlayer on the PC..

I don't think the HDR Network settings will let you set a Proxy.

Rgds.

If you router supports it you maybe able to send all traffic through the proxy by inputting your proxy their. Some routers also have the ability to send traffic from a specific IP (the HDR's) through a proxy.

But all this is guesswork - I have experiences of proxies but not with the HDR. But generally speaking this is doable with the right routers.

Yes putting the proxy server information into my router would be the ideal solution so that my PC, laptop, Playstation and Foxsat HDR all use the same information.

The problem until now has been that the service I use prompts for a username and password and routers don't generally support this sort of thing as far as I can tell.

Anyone who can suggest a solution is welcome to PM me. I'm happy to cancel my subscription to the UK provider and go with someone else.

Have you confirmed with Bush that they are going to offer a Freesat update?

Rgds.

BBC iPlayer will roll out gradually across all freesat HD digital boxes and freesat HD TVs once the service has been launched.
Therefore all freesat HD equipment will eventually receive the iPlayer update but it is unclear how long each manufacturer will take to issue the update!

So when the iPlayer rolls out on Freesat you just connect an ethernet cable from your router to the box. My router is some distance from the TV and it will mean another cable, pity it couldn't be done wireless...

Homeplug would seem ideal for this!

Has the beta test started yet? How is it accessed? Is there a secret colour button code like there used to be for the BBC's Wimbledon coverage before it went live?

Do you think you'll get an answer if the testers have signed a confidentiality agreement?

The BBC loves leaks though! After all they tend to know what is happening in politics before the politicians...

If it is a simple code it would be untraceable, but if the MHEG application is coded with as many codes as there are beta testers, it would be possible to guess who may have leaked (unless the codes are similar and easily guessable). Then again the beta testers may have special software on their sets so the code wouldn't work anyway for other people.

wii iplayer enhancements

It seems improvements to the wii iplayer will beat freesat to it http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8357777.stm - existing interface using web browser is really poor for me.

We'll soon be spoilt for choice of how to access iplayer !
