Hot drinks in soaps

They all must have luke warm or cold tea or coffee, cos half the time they drink from a cup, you see them holding the whole cup, instead of the handle..I always notice it..

But after the amount of time they spend being agony aunts or winging about their to each other they should go cold.

They get tough hands from all those slaps and punches they like doing.

Every time someone's drinking from a cup in a scene my mum's always there, ready to shout, "That cup's clearly empty!"

They probably only fill them up when a character needs to throw it at someone.

Ooh, don't - the whole "empty cups" thing drives me up the wall. Even if they put water in a mug, at least it would convey "weight" - which is probably really difficult to do unless you're a mime artist; empty cups are so obvious.

Maybe it's so actors don't splutter if it "goes down the wrong way" (a bit like they sometimes advise you not to accept a drink at a job interview), but considering they can have proper "pints" with some sort of liquid in them, I don't know why they can't do the same with cups and mugs (even if they don't actually drink from them).

I said this in the Corrie Reality thread - the cups are clearly empty!

I always think that. Not to mention the fact they drink it almost as soon as it's been poured. Now, I like to drink my tea as soon as possible, but not at the expense of a burnt tongue. Normally, I have to wait aminute or two for it to cool a little.

Debbie Dingle has to be the worst culprit when it comes to holding the whole cup of so-called 'hot drinks' and I find it really irritating each time she does it

Still, it's not as bad as in some soaps they will order a drink from the cafe or wherever and walk out shortly after it arrives not even having had a sip..... talk about money to burn.

This is one of the most silly threads ever. It's just so cold, I can't even think of a response

haha I always notice this. There is absolutely no way I could hold a cup of freshly poured tea/coffee like that without dropping it straight to the floor and suffering a burn. Either there is a very cold liquid in the cup or nothing at all.

They most likely keep the cups empty or containing cool liquids so there can be no serious accidents resulting in burned actors and lawsuits. Also, if a scene has to be filmed twenty or thirty times the actor or actress would burn their hand holding a hot cup that long and it would be very difficult to keep a drink hot for so long.

Actually you would wonder why this bothers us so much wouldn't you? But I guess it is in the mundaneness and normality of sitting down with a cuppa that we are all trying desperately to relate to here. After all we can't all find common ground with a street full of murderers, double-crossers and arsonists, well hopefully not!!!
I actually find that I can't help noticing that the cup is empty because of the lack of weight thing and the way they confidently thrust the cup into someone elses hand. I think if we were to delve more thoroughly into this, we would find it has something to do with insurance premiums.

In a similar vein, Andrew Marr on the Politics show last weekend, forgot himself and took a nibble of a cookie which Sting had brought in. Then as soon as it was in his mouth, he said, "Oh I shouldn't have done that - we are not supposed to eat anything on set". I personally can't recall any episodes of guests poisoning the show host and Sting looked more than capable of doing the Heimlich Manoeuvre!!

I think its funny when they have those take away cups, and even if they have a lid on, its just so obvious its empty. I don't know why, its just the way they hold the cup like they are holding a feather or something.
And when they have a regular cup or mug, they must only fill it a quarter

Like someone else said, couldn't they at least put cold liquid in?

Perhaps the storylines are so bad, the acting so wooden that people are now tuning in to watch some nice cups of tea or coffee. I must admit, this would be the only thing getting me to turn on EastEnders these days!

Still, there are more and more shows these days watched purely to see how bad they are, and moan about the fact, from soaps to reality TV. You can then join the 'club' like this forum to share your views on how bad it is - and XFactor is certainly a good example. Everyone seems to watch it to talk about how bad it is and why it should be axed - but then they'd have nothing to moan about!

I'm not slagging off others for saying these things, as I am one of those viewers!
