i went to Sunny Beach about 8 years ago. it was ok, nothing to write home about, it was a load of hotels and bars that shut about 1am. The beach was ok, and you could get a bus into Bourgas for about 30p.
But, that was 1 week, 1 resort, 8 year ago and its probably changed a heck of a lot since then |

Prostitutes, chavs, full of the sort of people whose main consideration for a holiday resort is cheap beer. Need I go on?

Negatives I discovered.
Tarts are everywhere (male and female). You can wrestle with tarts in mud. They have not heard of pasteurisation. Resort Reps do not encourage freedom to travel. My first hotel was a dive. The shower went up onto the ceiling, bringing down dirty plaster onto your body. I had to change hotels. Taxi drivers pester you all the time. They also try and get a fare off you at bus stops. Chavvy gypsy kids grab your legs in the markets Varna is creepy and looks like something out of Dracula. Beggars line the subway and lack eyes and limbs. They treat their disabled abysmally. Their department stores look like something out of "Are You Being Served". Menus are in a Russian script. They exploit their old people. Poverty. I saw old people ploughing a field with a horse. Turks and Bulgarians do not get on. Don't attempt a trip to Istanbul. Friends of mine got carbon monoxide poisoning in an ancient old coach. Positives. Cheese and chips. Cheap buses. Loads of ponies and traps. Very nostalgic. |

Been to this hotel in Sunny Beach for the last 2 years
http://www.helenaresort.com/ Right on the edge of the resort, half hour walk into the town centre, it is wonderful to just chill by the pool, quiet too. We have teenage boys, and they just wandered into town for the nightlife, whilst we just stayed in the resort most of the time. Pricey, but worth it. |

Friends went skiing there earlier this year and said it was the worst holiday they had ever had. They were both ready to come home after 24 hours and said they would never go back!
For what I can remember the Hotel and food were dreadful ( and they're not fussy). The local infastructure was not ready for tourists , no nightlife, people were difficult. They did not recommend it. Holidays there are cheap for a reason. |

We went skiing in Borovets before we had kids and is was the best holiday ever- we absolutely loved it
Went on honeymoon to Golden Sands We needed somewhere cheap at the time and I was having an operatin on my return so we didn't want to go far. We stayed in a five star hotel and enjoyed it but there were a lot of prostitutes about and kids begging. But we enjoyed it and there were other towns around that were nice to visitI udnerstand that out of the skiing season, the skiing resorts are nice to visit for mountain walking holidays but we have never been. This was 6 years ago all this but we enjoyed it and would go back, but probably not to the seasidey resorts |

We went on a city break to Sofia 2 years ago. Good if you like looking at churches, synagogues & mosques. Otherwise not a lot to do. And the locals are not all tourist-orientated, so the service was pretty poor. Very cheap alcohol though, if that's what you're looking for.

Oh God I'm Bulgarian and hate the typical tourist destinations...most of them are complete sh*t wholes (excuse my language) and people go away with a really bad impression of the country. My advice would be to stay well away from the seaside towns, it's chaos there atm.
Go somewhere mountany, the scenery there is beautiful. I would advice Beli Iskar. It's a village in the Rila mountains near Borovets, which is a skiing resort, but it doesn't yet have all the tacky hotes/drunk chavs etc. My uncle actually has a guest house there. Usually the hotels are small B&B type places and the people are friendly. Melnik is also worth visiting (south). It's a quiet, picturesque town with lots of history. But please, please avoid Sunny Beach!
