That's what my Mum and I have been saying all along. I don't know why they didn't think of Karen Hardy as replacement for Arlene instead of Alesha "You WAS great" Dixon!

I'm OK with Alesha, but I agree Karen would have been a much better choice. I love her on choreography corner on ITT.

Absolutely agree 100%
Despite winning, I don't think Alesha Dixon has the expertise, and therefore, right, to criticise people's dancing skills, particularly the finer points |

I said pretty much from the moment Alesha was revealed as a new judge that - if they really wanted to replace Arlene - Karen would've been a brilliant replacement.
Yes, Alesha is growing on me and I prefer her now to what I felt when the series began, but after hearing Karen's critique on ITT last week (or was it the week before?) I've realised what a shame it is they didn't ask her. She obviously knows what she's talking about. You never know, they may ask her next series. :P |

I understand where you're coming from but I think it would be good if that professional dancer had also had experience on the programme. After all, one of the reasons for employing Alesha was the empathy aspect. Karen, having seen several celebs through their varying times on the show should also be able to do this. Having won in the past, she also knows how much work goes into coping with an entire series and also what it means, and having gone out early, she knows how that feels too.

lets hope so I think BBC missed a trick not getting Karen on board, I think she would have brought in more viewers x Plus I think it will get even worse for Alesha when Darcy starts her shift x |

I'd personally retain Alesha, who at least brings a different perspective, and replace Len as head judge with Karen Hardy.

Karen is perfect as a judge because she has a lot of experience not only as a dancer but also as a judge. She has been traveling around the world working as a judge in competitions from what I've heard in the past...

I assume people don't believe that Karen would be any less harsh. I have nothing particularly against her, but she certainly spoke her mind about other couples when she was in the competition. I couldn't see her pulling her punches if she became a judge.
In fact, for Karen's sake, it's probably a good thing she isn't judging! |

Am I the only one thinking that Alesha was only ever going to be stop-gap before KH gets on the panel?

I love Karen, and have done since series 4, and when I learnt that Karen was stepping down as a dancer I really hoped she'd be joining the judging panel.
However, based on Choreography Corner I'm really glad she didn't! I really love her reviews, but if she was a judge do you think she'd still be sitting there doing the same job? I hope Karen stays in her current role (and maybe doing a bit more choreograohy - I loved the pro routines she put together in the past). Although it would be good to see her take to the floor in the odd demonstration here and there. Basically I hope Karen stays where she is for the same reason as I hope Claudia stays where she is - the roles they're in now suits them perfectly. |

I don't think her being more qualified would stop people from complaining and insulting her if they didn't like what she said. |

I'm ok with Alesha, she's getting an undue hard time. For the most part, her comments are actually no different from the other judges; in the sense that sometimes they make constructive comments regarding the technicalities, and sometimes they say things that really don't have much bearing on the dance and are purely for the sake of 'entertainment'. I think she is doing a respectable job considering the circumstances. Be honest, if the BBC paid you a load of money to do it, and doing it would help boost other parts of your career, you would?
Do I think ageism regarding Arlene was a factor in why she was booted? Yes. Do I agree with it? Heck no! Fact is though, Alesha is not the one to be gunning for. Complain to the bright spark at the BBC who had been watching too much Xfactor and thought it would be a great idea to copy the format of young, overly glamorous, under qualified pretty things to make critic of stuff they have no in depth understanding of – at least Alesha is a talented dancer! Unlike her contemporaries on ITV who, at best, are mediocre at what they do. But, you know, the judges are just talking heads – do they help you make up your mind about who is your favourite dancer? Probably not. Do they help the British public choose who they are going to vote for? I doubt it. Do you really think the professional dancers pay that much attention to the judges? Probably not, because Strictly is not a traditional dance competition. They are there for entertainment purposes only, it's a pantomime. Seriously, if you don't like Alesha being there, please write to the BBC and complain about Arlene being axed because she is not a young, glamorous thing; because THAT is the real problem. The BBC was trying to pander to a particular youth orientated, Heat reading demographic, and in the process showed ageism, sexism and complete ignorance and disregard for its audience and own credibility – they were more concerned about getting someone who looked right than someone who was qualified and experienced. Though, of course, none of the old men got the boot, just the old woman, and I personally find that a more important issue than whether Alesha should be replaced. So please, do complain about that to the BBC. I also notice she is getting a lot of stick for her grammar. People forget that they way she speaks is her local cultural dialect – there are hundreds, if not thousands of local cultural dialects across the UK. To answer your question, clearly, if you had to pick one of the two, Karen would be a more appropriate choice. Though, as I say, I think Alesha is doing an OK job. |
