Picture too big for TV screen

I have an 'LG' widescreen TV.

The picture is too big for the screen.... that is to say the top and bottom of the picture cannot be seen (eg. programme information banner, Sky TV 'ticker' etc).

I have been through the menu's on both the TV and the Digibox but can't fathom out how to rectify this.

can anyone help me please

is the sky box set to 16.9 in picture settings??

is the telly set to 16.9 or WIDE

on sky remote press TV then BLUE button. this should adjust TV picture settings from ZOOM to 4.3 and wide and whatever other settings you have

LGs, I was looking at one yesterday evening, have an "original" setting. I believe this is the correct setting.

The one I was looking at also has two menu's "Q-Menu" and "Menu" on the RC. I found best picture quality by using the "Q-Menu" button. Something about the standard Menu seemed to result in what, to men, looks like a lowering of the colour depth (fuzzy colours). I've seen similar effects on my tv when I initially connected my PC at a low colour depth, say 8 bit.

I can't explain why the q-menu gave better results, but there is a lot more control under the standard menu and I'm guessing that there was something incorrectly set that I couldn't identify.

think I've sussed it now.

The LG telly bizarrely doesn't have a picture setting on the menu.....well I can't find one anyway!

I had set the set top digito 16X9, so changed it to '4x3' mode and it seems to have done the trick. I'm presuming that the telly mustautomatically re-size the signal to widescreen.

as for the 'Q menu' button on the remote.... it just made the picture worse

thanks to all contributors for their input

On my little LG 22" LCD the aspect ratio button is labelled as ARC which is Aspect Ratio Correction if I recall.

Press it to scroll through the various screen size viewing options, they seem to like using a couple of not too obvious names such as original (16/9 anamorphic) - 4/3 - 14/9 - 14/9 zoom - Spectacle (stretchyvision)

"Spectacle"? Is that two images side by side - or can you only watch it with glasses on?

PS/ I've had at least two swigs of the sherry bottle tonight, so apologies if this is incoherent. I've got that loose, hang-dog feeling.

Most TV's have an option somewhere to turn off overscan (TV's overscan to push noise on some transmissions off the edge of the screen). On Sony TV's it's called "Full Pixel" so look for something similar

hehehe no it's the drunken viewing aspect ratio, it's what LG helpfully call the 'stretch-o-vison' mode, you know, the mode that most non enlightened people watch all programmes in where it stretches the 4/3 image at the corners to give a widescreen effect... or more precisely, a buggered up stretched/distorted and terrible effect.

This mode is ideal for all those Sky owners that still have 4/3 set because the installer was lazy

Sony call it smart mode, Panasonic call it 'just mode' and I call it shite mode.

If you're setting the box to 4:3 (4:3L I assume if it's a Sky box?) and it's producing the correct picture then something's wrong. Worst case you're missing the sides, best case you're seeing the correct picture but losing resolution (and likely doing something nasty to actual 4:3 content).

If you post your TV's model number someone may be able to give more specific advice on controlling its aspect ratio. It will be possible!
