Points of View: HD quality

OMG one of the Beeb producers thinks that a 40% decrease in bitrate doesn't affect picture quality.

It doesn't take a genius to realise that it does.

See my post on the POV board - If you change the coder it may be OK to reduce quite considerably. As was seen when BBC1 was statmuxed - too many folk judged the quality on bit rate .....
The new coder is "different" and some of the programmes are not being made withe the "WOW Sharp" look ... Surely what we want is fidelity...

What most people seeem to want is something which flaunts their new equipment and justifies all the money they have spent on it by showing it up there on the screen with all the bells and whistles.

So, the blocking seen on fades/mixes and demanding material is seen on the servers at red bee?

Yes, bit rate is not the only factor, so can someone sort out the encoder tools to get rid of the above and the "squirming" unstable backgrounds (not subjects) seen on some programs.

"there is no evidence that the drop in bit rate affects the picture quality"
So why did people write in to point out the drop then !
Look like the 'dab' issue again - lets see how bad we can get away with before people notice or complain

She saw no problem with 'bringing a film look to dramas'
have they not been listening at all ?
How many progs have they already ruined with this effect

Quite interesting that the drama bloke said that he knew some viewers were annoyed at this sort of thing and that it was always under discussion. Well, if that is the case, then pull it from Casualty and Holby City and put them back to how they used to me- maybe then you might at least be showing signs you might be listening to viewers and doing something about it...

I don't know why i bother watching PoV any more. Everytime something is brought up, they just mention it and them go onto the next item, don't say what they will do about it etc.

And when a member of BBC is interviewed, they always come up with some crap excuse and expect us viewers to believe them. It would help if it had a better presenter who isn't scared to bite back and question the guests a bit more.

I watched the Remembrance Festival last night on BBC HD and it was very disappointing, lots of noise etc. On the other hand, Life has looked brilliant on the same channel.

The difference is Life was shot in progressive whereas Remembrance was likely shot in interlaced (as are most live or near live productions) which requires more bandwidth to look good- unfortunately the level BBC HD has now been reduced to cannot cope with interlaced material so you get a lot of compression blocking, especially on shadowed or fast moving objects.

Actuallly, I've seen Life much better than it was shown tonight. The opening sequences of No.4 (Fish) could have been SD.

It seems to have been like that for a very long time.

It would be better to have Points of View as an entertainment programme, like it used to be with Barry Took, and a separate Feedback-type programme. (There used to be Biteback and, long before then, Talkback, but neither were done very well.) I'd expect Nicky Campbell to be a good presenter of this type of show (unlike some others I could mention).

They should have just shown us the difference (if any- ha! ha!) and cut the waffle.

I guess that's too simple.
