Should Nolan really be talking about X-Factor?

as someone who trys to avoid The X Factor, and like to hear discussion about the days news, im not overly thrilled that he is now talking about it, hes done it before, he did with Got Talent etc

Whilst I dont mind a chat about something light hearted that is in the news , should it really be an ITV reality show?

A question often asked and crazily Radio 5 often does talk about ITV talent/reality programmes but they will not allow anyone to respond on their message boards.

And of course Radio 5 closed their board altogether.

Could you say that first sentence again but in clear English because I'm struggling to understand what the heck you're on about?

its worth me saying that if something big/important happens on the show, then yes they can be talked about, if an expert wants to talk about the effect of those shows on society then they can be talked about.

However talking about "Jedwood" and the normal week to week happenings of the show, is not what should be discussed.

I agree, they do it on breakfast too, talking about a karaoke contest as if it's of world importance just because it gets a lot of viewers - a caller this morning said that after what happened last night (no, me neither),X Factor had lost all credibility (or integrity, can't be 100% sure of the word she used) - she obviously has no sense of irony, I almost choked on me cornflakes.

Yes i tuned into stephen nolan last night and wondered why an itv show " X-factor " was the topic of conversation I would have thought if anything they would have talked about the bbcs own show ,"strictly come dancing".(though i would rather they talked about no reality cr-p at all)

I also tuned into the radio five live breakfast show this morning the first thing i heard was an item on.......you guessed it " X-factor" ",why is the bbc so obsessed with an itv programme?

As it happens i watch no reality tv shows so to me any discussion is pointless, but if anything i would have thought the bbc would discuss its own show. Or something more worthwhile (my preferance news itmes),though nolan was also discussing the rememberance day services as well to be fair.

Apparently Nolan is sitting-in for Peter Allen for a week next month on the R5 drive programme. Personally I like Nolan. I wonder if he will continue to do his Radio Ulster show which is the top-rated programme in Northern Ireland

X Factor is, I think, the highest rating show on TV at the moment. It's what people are talking about down the pub. Even those who don't watch it have an opinion on the Jedward devil twins. It's entirely natural, therefore, that a news talk station that has a populist agenda will talk about it.

It was right for Nolan as many listeners would have seen the show that had ended an hour before, and it's right to continue it on breakfast. I suspect Radio 4 didn't go too big on it, and that's the choice offered to you by the BBC. I didn't listen to Talksport today or LBC but I'd put money on them talking about it too.

As for Strictly, man from Coronation Street graciously exits the contest isn't exactly a talking point, whereas - for instance - John Sergeant last year was.

I agree its more of a talking point than Strictly, but isnt it more of a talking point for something like TalkSport rather than 5Live, not sure why 5Live should be like talking to your mates down the pub. However you could have a Sunday night "pub chat" format of a show, for this kind of discussion, but limit pub chat to that show only.

With the greatest of respect, I don't think you understand the remit of 5 Live. It's exactly there to reflect the topics that people are talking about in their social circles. However, it also covers the very serious topics. 5 live does that, and Radio 4 takes a more sombre tone. Simples!

have you not heard some of this discussion, the guests they have to provide POVs dont really want to discuss it, half of them said they dont want to on air.

Is X Factor a reality television show now? When did that happen? It hasn't any fly on the wall elements and no hidden cameras. Cowell calls it a singing competition. Was Opportunity Knocks reality? What about other kinds of contest? Are sports shows reality? Should there be no sports on 5?

It's not just Nolan - all of the Radio 5 presenters (bar Peter Allen) seem to be obsessed with this show.

Personally, I've never seen a single episode and have no idea who any of the contestants are.

But many do - as I say - it's a big talking point today, Five Live is a talk station. For you - and others who insist they don't want to hear about X factor - try Radio4. It may be more to your taste.
